My wife's nebook has Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS (kernel 2.6.32-33-generic i686), and is using the linux driver for Realtek RTL819x wifi cards. I installed the driver ages ago with:

getting the wireless chipset (Realtek 8176) to work, but finally got the WLAN to show up. Now, it seems as though it will recognize my WLAN and SSID, ask for my WPA password, but never connect. I connect fine over wired ethernet. It will not connect wirelessly to an unsecured network either. I previously had Jolicloud installed on my netbook, and my wireless worked out of the box with no setup, but I really didn't like the lack of application support with Jolicloud. I ended up in dependency hell just trying to update Banshee for use with my iPod.

I installed Archlinux yesterday on my Aspire One netbook. I installed fluxbux window manager with the ROX file manager/desktop manager.Everything was working fine until I was walking through a guide to set up the Fn keysto use the keyboard hotkeys for changing the brightness and audio settings here: [URL]I used xmodmap to set additional short cuts. Every since, I can't use my keyboard when I run 'startx'. My laptop touch mouse is working but I noticed the cursor speed has slowed down drasticly since I input the above changes.
I tried putting in 'setxkbmap no' in my ~/.xinitrc, 'no' was the language which is set up in my /etc/X11/xorg.conf and was working before. I also reverted to a back-up of my xorg.conf which I had saved a few hours before, which also didn't work.What could the problem could be here? How can I ensure my keyboard is being properly initialise when I start up Xorg/fluxbox?
my play on linux wont work i go to download a game and it just freezes then it asks me to force quit or wait is because of the computer im using a netbook nb305 toshiba with a intel atom processor with ubuntu netbook os?

Now in Karmic Koala. I can get to the grub. Yet any fooling around here it always says unrecognized command. Well really I don't know what I am doing.I have a Intel graphic processor in this lap top I am sure. When it did boot up in 904 the display would mess up. I had upgraded all the way from 804 because I could never get my Alfa usb wifi to work. As for now it will not boot up? Is there any links on the subject? Not sure why this in red it was not on purpose

View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter running Ubuntu Netbook off a USB for a while, I decided to format completely and install Ubuntu as the main OS. Except now the bootup is incredibly slow. Once I start the computer it goes to a black screen that resembles the Terminal. I have to wait 5-10 mins to get it completely booted up. Again, if I run it off the Ubuntu USB over the installed Ubuntu, the USB one is much faster.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have downloaded Ubuntu Netbook and created a USB drive and a CD with the image. When I plug in the USB into Toshiba NB250 netbook it just doesn't boot. I've changed the boot order in BIOS, I've tried f12 to get to boot menu and select the USB drive. I've also tried a CDROM drive too, both with an altered boot order and from boot menu. No matter what I use, Windows 7 loads. I don't even get a screen to suggest that the USB drive is being read.
The USB drive is fine, I have used it two weeks ago to install Windows 7 on the same netbook. I also have a Sony VGN NR32 L. Here, it gets to a screen giving me a choice of trying Ubuntu or installing it. No matter what choice I make, the laptop restarts and boots to that same screen giving me a choice of what to do.
I have the install disk on a pendrive and all that (Its the netbook remix 10.04) but when I try to run the "Demo and full installation" I reboot and it just goes back to windows xp. I tried to install the cd helper thing, but it just makes an error and fails. I can't seem to get into the bios because whenever I reboot, the screen is black until windows is loaded and everything. Any help would be appreciated. My netbook is a NB200 by Toshiba.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm building a mini-itx system and need a wireless card. The Jetway MB says pcie mini card, so I'm considering the Intel 512AN_MMWW2. Anybody used this with Ubuntu 10.04? Looks like it's working for some folks, but no entries in the wiki yet.Also, It does not come with an antenna. This is for a mini-itx case so a laptop antenna set will not be ideal. Does someone know where to get an antenna or two that are made for mini-itx cases? The MB backplate has a punch out for a wireless antenna. I've looked, but don't see what I need anywhere.

However, I later found out that my internal wireless card was not supported by wireless monitoring applications (aircrack, kismet, etc) that I wanted to learn to use. So I brought a compatible USB wireless card, Netgear WNDA3100 V.2, but then I run into some problems. First, how can I install new hardware in linux? Second, I know I have to install the madwifi driver but do I have install the original driver before I install madwifi? Can I have both antenna running at the same time?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have tried using UNetbootin to install Ubuntu Netbook Remix (Lucid) on my Toshiba NB205 and am having no luck. Both it and Kubuntu NR will boot from live USB and seemingly install successfully, but when I select the Ubuntu option, it hangs and drops me down to BusyBox with initramfs.
When UNR was distributed as a .img file, I could use Canonical's USB image .exe to prepare the USB drive and it always worked like a charm, but now UNetbootin fails me all too often. I don't really have access to another Ubuntu box to run usb-creator with, so has anyone had any success with any other install method? I am dual booting with Windows 7.

I misplaced my Belkin USB wifi antenna recently -- I'd never gotten it working with Ubuntu as I lacked the original driver CD and hadn't bothered doing the footwork with ndiswrapper (without driver files, as Belkin just gives you an .exe) to get it functional. I'm currently living in a home where I can't be wired directly to the router, so I'm looking for advice on what kind of antenna I should get to replace it. Are there any manufacturers out there that provide Linux drivers out of the box, who make quality hardware?

Ideally if the device need no config, that is if its 'plug in and play' would be ideal. Though if theres support in the ubuntu drivers tool that would be ok too. There's no hardware enable/disable that I can find.I have tried "sudo ifconfig wlan0 up" to enable it, the light for the wifi antenna comes on, but still no luck.I know the wifi works in Ubuntu, because if i load windows first, then reset into Ubuntu, once in a while it works just fine.

(not monitor mode) Now I'm interested in Alfa AWUS036NEH. I like it because it is small an have a long antenna strong 1000mW. signal. (AWUS036H is a little bit big for me) However from what i have read AWUS036NEH is not supported in master mode (softAP)(or may be supported but with hostapd, but again some forum said it doesn't support and some say it does... Totally confused.) -> Actually AWUS036NEH is not expensive but I don't want to invest in something i'm not sure about so I won't buy it until I really know if it works. So I switch to find out what is for sure
1. supported in master mode in Ubuntu
2. Have a long antenna (like 5" or something. I have no idea about hardware but I think longer antenna should send signal more further)
3. small (about normal USB size don't count antenna)
Sadly I only find Alfa AWUS036NEH the only option for me , the others has no brand. However TL-WN722N is what most likely to fit. Only it has a shorter antenna. Can i replace the antenna with a longer one (with some others brand) by myself? (TL-WN722N can use master mode in kernel 3.0 ? already ? some say it should but i've not seen one that stated clearly) Ahh I think the above is totally messed up. I will make long story short.
1. Is AWUS036H or AWUS036NEH support master mode in ubuntu ? (if yes with hostapd or something?)

A couple days after an update to Ubuntu 10.10's networking stuff I was unable to connect to my wireless network that had a password. Now, I can connect to a different connection that doesn't have a password but when I try to go to mine it doesn't work.

And yes I do know that the password is correct as I am connecting right now on Win7.
Ubuntu no longer boots up on my Archos 10 netbook, it's been working fine for the whole month I've had it but now it simply sticks to the Ubuntu loading screen and doesn't progress further. Windows still boots fine so my guess is it's not a hard drive failure that's causing it.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have been a happy Fedora user since late in the F9 release and now use F11 32 bit.Two days ago my 2wire modem/router took a dive. My ISP sent us a Motorola 3347-02 and since then my computer will not reach the internet. I have read everything I can and still haven't found the solution! Some things that I have tried: Disable network manager and do it manual, configure static IP, wipe system and reload, installed F11 on another computer.None of these have worked.Now I am booting from Ubuntu and have no issue but I can't stand Ubuntu.

Whenever I try to login, it just takes forever and then either Chrome or Firefox tell me that perhaps the site no longer exists. It works perfectly fine on Windows. Strangely it also does not work on my Roku box and is working sporadically on my PS3. I would think it was my ISP or my router if it wasn't working perfectly fine on Windows.
I AM NOT TRYING TO WATCH NETFLIX ON LINUX. I know that doesn't work. I'm just trying to update my queue. I'm having this problem both on Fedora and Ubuntu (latest stable releases on both). I know it's not just loading from cache on my Windows machine because I'm going to pages that I have never been to and it's working just fine. Now, I have not tried signing out and in because then I'll be up a creak. OK, I installed another browser on my Windows computer and I'm able to sign into Netflix just fine. So it's not a sign-in issue.
WHY DOES THIS WORK ON WINDOWS? It's the same browsers - Chrome and Firefox on Linux and Windows and the same network.
ALSO, flickr is not working correctly - I cannot make any comments in the discussions (but can on photos which is ajax-y).
update: also checked a Linux computer using Linux Mint that hasn't been turned on in 2 months. I know it was able to access Netflix back then. Nothing has been changed - not even updates. It also cannot access Netflix. Either taking forever to load [URL] or when trying to login.
via looking in Konqueror, I saw it's trying to go [URL] and that's what makes it so that I cannot connect to [URL] if it considers me to be signed in. And here's what Konqueror said:

I think an update or something has killed Samba on my Karmic box. it can see Windows shares OK, but it no longer appears on the Windows network.I have not changed my smb.conf for months, so something else has been modified.Looking in the logs I can see the following in "log.winbindd-idmap" after restarting Samba

All other networking seems fine (internet, Synergy+ etc) it's just sharing out to the Windows network that is broken.
It still works fine if I boot into "good old" Windows. I must say I am SOOO disapointed with the Network Manager in Ubuntu which was great until 10.4 and has been crap ever since. I have had so many problems with my Vodafone USB and had to find an alternative method of getting it to work. Now the last straw is that my wireless LAN card is not getting recognised on startup so I have not connectivity when at home. (USb via Vodafone is no good in my area). I am typing this via an old Windows PC because my Ubuntu just does not work anymore. I have not installed anything new so what has happened - or how can I get it to work again.
I was completely sold on Ubuntu but am now considering reverting to Windows. It would be worth paying for an operating system that actually works, even if I have all the other hassles as well. A year ago Ubuntu was great - it all worked ! Not any more how can all that good work have gone down the pan - I can't understand how anyone could let all these nertwork problems occur - it isn't just me - read the threads - it's widespread.
I have just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a pc as a duel boot, On the computer I use a belkin surf and share n speed controller to connect wireless ( pc doesn't have a wireless connection) I have found the correct driver RLT8192SU from realtek and unzipped it and moved the contents to a flash drive. The problem is I am a total noob to Linux based systems and i have no ideal how to install the contents, there is a read me file but it makes no sense to me and i have absolutely no clue how to install the driver so i have no internet. Is there an easier way to install or step by step instructions?

After several days of searching, reading and re-installing, I'm at a complete loss as to why autofs has suddenly stopped working.
Basically, I can see the shared folders on the host computer but as soon as I try to cd into the folders I get "-bash: cd: [directory]: No such file or directory" (where [directory] = shared drive).
The setup was working before and the same exact setup is being used and is fully functional on another computer.

I'm not sure where to look to find out why this is failing. The shared drive are visible, but then disappear when I try to access them. The same exact setup, on another machine works perfectly fine.
I've installed successfully the ubuntu 9.10 netbook remix on my DELL Latitude 430.Everything work out of the box except the wifi, I cannot find a way to get working.Using the lshw command, I can see that the interface is listed, but status is disabled.On the Network Manager, status I get is device not ready.As a FYI, bluetooth seems working perfect (I've not tried to pair with any device)as this is the only roadblock I face before enjoying Ubuntu on my laptop.
View 6 Replies View RelatedWhile installing the openSuSE on my Netbook (Acer AspireOne D250) with a bootable thumbdrive Live image, the installation seemed to go fine, but after the installation was completed, there was no "network"! I checked and the system auto-sensed the drivers, but when I go into the network, even trying to manually set up the IP info, Yast reports NO NETWORK running!!
I then went out and bought a USB CD-ROM drive and installed using the boot CD (Network install) on the external USB CD-ROM drive. It booted up fine, and installed "RIGHT OFF OF THE NETWORK", but when the install was through, I could not access the network. Same error: NO NETWORK RUNNING!! Now I've installed openSuSE on this unit before (v11.4) and it worked fine (after I changed the wireless driver to the legacy driver) but this time it's NOT working!! My 13yr old son uses the Netbook, and was so excited to get to use LINUX instead of Windows ... until now.
