General :: Unable To Boot ArchLinux On Macbook Pro 7.1 - Drops To Recovery Shell
Aug 4, 2011
My MBP fails to boot Arch. This is what I did to install ArchLinux. Install rEFIT.
Partition using disk utility such that first one is Mac partition, second is Arch & the third ie the last one is windows.
Then put Windows 7 CD, select it from rEFIT and install it. Similar, install ArchLinux just as I did for windows.
Then finally to install the GRUB, I issued the command $grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/arch - recheck /dev/sda3 (after mounting my /dev/sda3 to /mnt/arch).
This is the exact error and then it drops to recovery:
Error after typing exit:
I have tried rootfstype too. No success.
My menu.lst (I have tried /dev/sda3 too):

After installing karmic with Grub2 I am unable to boot into Archlinux partition. Grub2 has removed the last line of the Archlinux boot stanza! It used to read:-
[Code]....
Following the Grub2 tutorials I have tried editing /etc/grub.d/40_custom as follows:-
[Code]....
But no luck. Only way into Archlinux is to get into the edit shell and manually add the missing line and remove other stuff not needed. I have spent hours trying to resolve this issue and I am fairly p----d off

I'd like to say I'm very impressed with Fedora 11. I'm a long time Linux user and I've tried many distros. But, I usually keep only the best on my laptop. For a long time that was Ubuntu but, I think Fedora 11 has made some key improvements over Ubuntu and I'm eager to switch. The problem is: I haven't been able to run Fedora as anything other than on the Live CD. Everything works perfectly and it installs but, when I reboot, Grub begins. Instead of booting, however, Grub drops into its minimal shell and gives me a command line.
I've tried installing it a number of ways now and have read much about the problems with Ext4 on Grub and took special care to see that Grub has its own, separate, /boot ext3 partition. Even then, no luck. My hardware should work fine. I've got an HP DV-5 with 4GB RAM, AMD Turion 64-bit dual-core @ 2 Ghz, and an IDE 250GB hard drive. I'm working with the 64-bit Fedora 11 Live disc with KDE as the Gui.

I switched over from Ubuntu because I realized Ubuntu sucks now (lol), but anyways... Now I'm trying to get Grub2 to boot up properly, but this "xputs" error pops up and drops me to the recovery prompt. I tried the grub-install dev/sda and all it did was recognize my Windows 7 OS (as Vista) and added it to the bootloader list and didn't fix the "xputs" issue.
I heard that doing a chroot is the most effective solution. Forgive me, but I don't know what "chroot" means or how effective it is. I can specify more information about where the OS is if needed. I have the boot flag set to the Debian OS at the hd(0,5) or sda5 I think, and Windows is at sda1 (I think). I just want to make sure I can fix this without damaging Windows, and I'll try to get more information.
Right now, I can only get into Windows or Debian with UBCD and Grub2 Super Disk and I know that sometimes Parted Magic could orderly mount the disks differently, so I don't know if it was sdaX or sdbX, but probably sdaX. I'll check again.

I tried installing a live version of Debian Squeeze 6.0.0 for the i386 architecture. I am using a first generation MacBook Pro (Intel Core Duo, not Core 2 Duo).
I managed to boot the live cd and install everything using the "guided installation" option, using the whole drive for Debian (I don't have the Mac OS X Snow Leopard disc so I just wanted to install a strictly Debian system). I installed GRUB to the master boot-record, but after finishing the installation and rebooting I was confronted with the dreaded "question mark". After doing a bit of reading, I found that I should have installed the EFI LILO bootloader to the MBR instead of GRUB, so I reinstalled everything, choosing this option instead. But that didn't work either. More question marks. I imagine I must have to configure either of these bootloaders in the shell, but I don't know how to go about doing this.
How to do this without using a Mac OS X installation disc.

I installed ubuntu 10.04 by wubi. It works perfect until I installed and ran "startupmanager". I find that I can't enter ubuntu, even in recovery mode. The screen keeps showing "rstslog main process ended, respawning [fail]" and other text

I have a Dvd of Slackware as well as an Iso image of Arch.
All i know about the difference between Slackware and Arch is the stability, i.e. Slackware is more stable than Arch !
Is that all or there is some other difference which should be considered ?
Which one out of the above two, should i go for and why ?

I'm having a little issue managing my iphone on archlinux+kde. This is the only way I got it to sync.
sudo killall usbmuxd
sudo usbmuxd -f -v
And then the only program that recognices the device is Clementine and it works quite fine. What I'd like to do is to make that automaticaly, so I wouldn't have to do it everytime i turn on my computer.

I've decided to install Fedora 14 on my Late 2008 Macbook Pro (model 5,1), but when attempting to boot from the live cd, all I get is the main boot menu, then I briefly get a grey screen with a blinking white cursor, then the screen just goes black. The computer is still running, and I can still hear the cd drive, but I have no video. I've seen the tutorials for installing Fedora 14 on a 5,1 macbook pro, and I know it's been done successfully with no mention of such issues.

I broke sudo when I wrongly edited a file in /etc/sudoers.d in vi(did not use visudo :-().I read that I could fix the same by rebooting into the 'Recovery Mode' by selecting the same from the grub menu.
However I'd earlier disabled the showing of the grub menu by editing /etc/default/grub. As a result I can't seem to go into recovery mode to fix my broken sudo.

I followed instructions on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookAir3-2/Meerkat , including the post install ones. Ubuntu with GNOME 2 runs fine, but some animations in GNOME Shell are very slow, like switching to and from Overview. I tried drivers from xorg-edgers and x-swat PPAs, but things are still slow. The most relevant solution I found is http://live.gnome.org/GnomeShell/SwatList. I applied the patch
Code:
$ cd ~/gnome-shell/source/gnome-shell
$ curl http://bugzilla-attachments.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=157326 > shell-animations-nvidia.patch
[code]....

I installed Archlinux yesterday on my Aspire One netbook. I installed fluxbux window manager with the ROX file manager/desktop manager.Everything was working fine until I was walking through a guide to set up the Fn keysto use the keyboard hotkeys for changing the brightness and audio settings here: [URL]I used xmodmap to set additional short cuts. Every since, I can't use my keyboard when I run 'startx'. My laptop touch mouse is working but I noticed the cursor speed has slowed down drasticly since I input the above changes.
I tried putting in 'setxkbmap no' in my ~/.xinitrc, 'no' was the language which is set up in my /etc/X11/xorg.conf and was working before. I also reverted to a back-up of my xorg.conf which I had saved a few hours before, which also didn't work. What could the problem could be here? How can I ensure my keyboard is being properly initialise when I start up Xorg/fluxbox?

I have never in a year had a problem with this d-boot system. Two days ago I tried to boot into ubuntu like every day. It started to load normal, went to the ubuntu logo and paused for about 15 seconds and posted this under the logo:
One or more of the mounts listed in /etc/fstab cannot yet be mounted
/: waiting for /dev/loop0
/tmp: waiting for (null)
/boot: waiting for /host/ubuntu/disks/boot
Press ESC to enter a recovery shell
I have looked everywhere and tried so many things, I can't look any further. All I have been doing for two days is trying to boot this system.

A failed upgrade, from disk images, of Fedora 10 to 11 resulted in no GRUB bootloader main menu appearing on bootup (no WIN, no LINUX choices from which to boot). I am booted directly into the GRUB command shell...so, no WIN, no LINUX, nothing. And my understanding of GRUB shell commands is very low.I have 2 hard disks, WIN on the first, LINUX on the second. I believe GRUB Bootloader is on the first disk.Sadly, I have no external install media. An old grub.conf hardcopy indicates that root =/dev/sdb2, root (hd1,0), kernel /vmlinuz....olderversion...(relative to /boot),initrd /initrd...olderversion... (relative to boot). and WINDOWS on (hd0,1), with chainloader +1
I need to somehow get past this grub shell, and re-install/re-instate the grub bootloader, so it can boot normally. What grub command(s) must I use? I've played around with the commands, but with no success.I worry that if I can't resolve this, the whole machine may be useless.

I am creating one bash script name as pathsetup.sh.
In that , I am trying to setup a path to my user profile. S my script content is as follows,
pathsetup.sh contains,
#!/bin/bash
MY_PATH=/home/arun/NS3/ns-3.9/build
export PATH=$PATH:$MY_PATH
echo "$PATH"
If I run the script, when run time it shows the MY_PATH added to PATH.
But, when I check it in terminal after run, it doesn't add the PATH.
if I put echo $PATH in terminal, it show old path.
How can I add path permanently to a user.
I read, ~.bash_profile , we can add the path permanently for a user.
But, I want to add MY_PATH for a specific time. I don't want any user change the file .bash_profile each time.
Just running the pathsetup.sh script, MY_PATH should be added to the user PATH.
Instead of .bash_profile, using shell script, can it possible to add path permenetly for a user.

I have had this issue for a while on my centos 5.4 dedicated server with 1and1. If I reboot my system, my connection starts and then drops in about 10 seconds after the system has booted.I connected through the serial console and noticed there was only one thing that seemed suspicious while booting. named could not start for some reason. So my question is - are these 2 problems related? If not, what could be the reason for my connection to drop?At the moment the only way of getting the connection back up is by running dhclient. This works until the next reboot.

I recently got a new MBP 8,2 and am trying to install Ubuntu (to a separate partition, but I don't think that matters as I am unable to get that far).I have installed rEFIt and can successfully get to the installation menu from any CD I've tried so far. However, after trying to install Ubuntu, it is unable to find any disk in the CD/DVD drive. This doesn't make much sense, the DVD is, in fact, in the drive and it must have read from the drive to display the menu.I have tried a number of different options with the alternative installs to no avail.I have also tried different distributions:11.04 AMD-64 alternate, 11.04 AMD-64 live, 11.04 AMD-64 alternate+mac, and 10.04 AMD-64 live.I have also tried to make a USB install but was unable to get it to display as a bootable device

mojo@mojo:~/Downloads$ sudo apt-get install gnome-shell
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following packages have unmet dependencies: gnome-shell : Depends: mutter but it is not going to be installed it asks for mutter, yet mutter is already installed. I think it asks for different version of mutter.

I have a Computer, It came with Windows 7 64bit on it. I installed Ubuntu through WUBI. I used the Windows Disk Management program to resize my HDD. I shrunk the main drive and created a 20 gig free space. I installed WindowsXP on this 20g space. I had to change from AHCI to ATA. I started my new XP installation. As I should have expected my the screen that let me pick between Windows 7 and Ubuntu was gone, and it just said XP. Well thats cool. I get in XP use bcdeasy and use the install Win7 to mbr. So I restarted. Great I now I have Ubuntu and Win7... but no XP. So i think, okay, ill boot into Ubuntu, use the update grub command and XP will be there, so i do it and restart. No XP, So i try to boot into Win7 and see if i can do something in there.. No luck it says it can't boot and takes me to a startup recovery thing. Which, as Windows recovery things tend to do, doesn't find anything wrong. So I have Ubuntu now, which is great, but I do need Windows.

Just purchased a new Mac book (white) Uni-body Model ID 7.1
Intel 2.4 GHz Core Duo
Mac OS X 10.6.4
4Gb Ram (upgraded)
Hitachi 500Gb 7200 RPM (Upgraded)
Installed r-EFIt and then ran disk utility created 3 partitions one for Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit and two for Ubuntu 10.04 the windows install went smooth was able to boot into either OS without any problems then tried installing Ubuntu and then would get errors using the Live CD that I created I burned two additional disks at slower speeds then tried one of them in a another PC and it would work even ran it in live CD mode now have my taste buds wet want to use it on my Mac Book.
When I tried to install on the Mac Book it would fail with error no device found to install it would not even get to select the language with internal DVD drive so I hooked up a usb drive and would get up to step 4 to where you select the partition to install Ubuntu on this is where it gets to the problem it was blank no internal drive was able to get to Gparted in Live mode and same thing the hard drive would not show up.
I booted back into MAC OS X and ran disk utility it shows the partitions. A additional I tried the option to turn off ACPI before running installer still could not find the hard drive also downloaded a live gparted and same result could not see the HDD.

I installed lucid last week, and this morning installed some updates that appeared in update manager and then started having issues with permissions so I rebooted. Now when I try and log in I get the message Authentication Error Normally this wouldn't be a problem I would reboot again hit ESC just before loading Grub appeared and go into recovery mode and change the password for my master user. But I never get the chance to press ESC, and even I hold the key down from the time my BIOS flash screen is up, I never get the GRUB menu.
