View 3 RepliesThere are a lot of backup solutions, many scripts based of rsync. The problem is not a lot of them encrypt your data before syncing it. I have a USB hard drive and I want to backup my user folder /home/myuser/ to the external drive What software will allow me to create incremental backups which are encrypted with relative ease
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am IT Manager. Currently I am responsible for a mostly IBM shop, running a mix of AIX, OS/400. VMware, and Windows.
My P-series running AIX and Oracle and my AS/400 both back up to tape drives daily.
But my VMware system is not being backed up, the virtual machines are, but my tape drive just broke down.
I just ordered a server grade machine with an i5 CPU, running 3 2TB SATA drives in RAID5, this is going to be my new backup server.
I am hoping I can put Linux on it, and some sort of open source file replications, real time backup software that will back up my Windows servers, and my Windows desktops in real time.... any sort of animal exist?
Are there any network backup solutions out there that are open source and awesome? Something that behaves and is easy like Symantec Netbackup or Arkeia network backup?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am mainly a Windows admin, but I do *NIX administration from time to time, for now I need to use an open source solution for backup windows environment mainly, I spent last days playing with bacula and backupPC, and I then chose backupPC, I built a solution with it seems working not bad, but before i go on deeper, I thought asking geeks here better, my main experience with back was with Vertias/Symantec Backup Exec, what do you recommend as most similar backup solution in Ubuntu offer a close level (I don't backup to tapes I back to hard disks), also a gui is preferred, while backupPC do a nice work and i handled its client config file (machine_name.pl), but I still do mistakes sometimes and troubleshooting is annoying, I have to backup files from users machines some of these files are running (like PST files), and I could need to backup a database or something from time to time. so whats your opinion all?

View 1 Replies View RelatedWe all know we can install a linux system such as Fedora 10 and use it. Being linux, one should in principle get the source codes for everything that has been precompiled (except the proprietary drivers such as nvidia) in the installation DVDs/CDs. Where are the source codes ? Is there a place I can download them ?
To avoid confusion, I am not referring to the kernel source that can be compiled to give a linux kernel, but that does not include the drivers, such as intel_drv.so.
To be more specific, the intel graphic i810 driver has been built into any linux system, but where is the exact source? One answer may be that primary source intellinuxgraphics.com. However, if anyone tries to download the every changing (i.e., keep updated almost every single day) driver source codes from freedesktop.org, it is almost certain that the source codes will not be the same as the one that is finalized in Fedora 10.
I want to see the source code of smplayer software.from where i can see source code of open source softwares?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have the following setup code...
I would like to activate 802.1x authentication on the Windows PCs, and have the Linux Box play the role of a 802.1x authenticator (blocking all access to the Internet until the Windows PCs have properly authenticated themselves using the 802.1x protocol, and the Linux Box checks the credentials by interrogating the RADIUS server).
I could theoretically insert a 802.1x-capable switch between the Windows PCs and the Linux Box, but this setup is embedded and the hardware cannot be changed.
Apparently the OpenWRT project solved the problem somehow, so there must be an open-source solution somewhere, but I simply cannot find it. The only links I find are for the Open1X project (http://open1x.sourceforge.net/), but the Docs link is dead.
I'm faced with standing up an open source NMS and am deep into Zenoss Core. I'm evaluating distributed collectors that will be deployed behind a customer NAT/Firewall. Cool, this works. What if the customer IP space overlaps with an existing customer IP space? From a management perspective Zenoss distinguishes devices by IP. So it will refuse to add duplicate addresses. To get multi-realm IP functionality, It would require purchasing a subscription to enterprise license.
So my pickle, do I spend weeks or months hacking the Zenoss sub structure to duplicate that? Do I somehow remap the IPs through site to site VPN at the router? Or do I look for a different open source solution?Does anyone know of an open source NMS solution that addresses overlapping IP space and can do distributed collectors? I have posted a question on Zabbix forums asking if the distributed monitoring they have will do this. But I hope that someone else has tackled this and succeeded.

View 1 Replies View Relatedthat guide me about how (what steps should we do) to organize open source projects in the Linux community. Our idea is to organize an open source project of OPENCVOpenCV is a computer vision library originally developed by Intel. It is free for use under the open source BSD license. The library is cross-platform. It focuses mainly on real-time image processing. Our idea is to organize an open source project in the Linux community, that be a point in which programmers using OpenCV can meet, to develop programs to recognize the road lanes.OpenCV can be used to recognize the road lanes, and allow a car drive alone (if you have a camera inside the car and a laptop mother board running Linux and controlling the car's steering wheel).
Here you have some example of what we want to do[URL]Unfortunately, even being free OpenCV many companies as SIEMENS are working in this, trying to develop an autopilot for cars that would cost a fortune and wouldn't be available for everyone (it will be closed and not free - as Linux). We believe in the free software and Linux. Our idea is to organize a community of programmers interested in computer vision and opencv to create computer programs, and to make the first platform in Linux able to recognize the road lanes and allow the cars to drive alone.
Our problem is we don't know how to do that. How do you organize an open source project in the Linux community? How do you get people involved in the project? How do you start from cero? Please, help us to organize a project of this type, to make the first autopilot of the automotive industry, based in Linux

View 1 Replies View RelatedRecently, I started downloading data from a website that shows houses for sale. My goal is to create a website on which people can find out about the pricing over the course of time and the length of time a house remains available. I have created a MySQL database, which is currently being fed each night. At this point, I have enough data records to start analyzing and mining this data. Now I have come to the part of starting a datawarehouse. I love to use a data modelling tool, like the one from MySQL. Yet, I have a hard time finding some documentation over data modelling a data vault datawarehouse using open source tools. Pentaho looks promising, but I need to keep this low-budget. So low-budget it needs to be free. MySQL Workbench has a moddelling tool as well. Yet it does not support a data vault scheme.Has anyone any experience in setting up a datawarehouse? Or in particular a data vault datawarehouse using open source tools?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am looking for the opinions of some linux users as to why they prefer using open source software and what they perceive as the main differences between it and proprietary software. In particular, I am curious as to what meaning, if indeed any, users and contributors ascribe to the open source community and how they view it on a less technical level.

2) Open Source? How to explain a difference between open source and freeware? Do we really benefit running open source programs instead of freeware? Most of us will never read a line from a source. We want, we require easily accesible binaries.
So why a common window$ user find worthy to run Linux? What can Linux offer? Linux should be as different from window$ as it is possible.
3) Twm window manager is definitely something strange - in the way the vi editor for notepad users. Twm is for some reasons better than any other wm. I started both kde desktop and xfce desktop under twm. Both desktops can be iconyfied. It is your choice which at this moment you prefer. But you can work with both. Full democracy. No more discussions which is better.
4) When finally developers of KDE, GNOME will make these desktop almost perfect they will be obsolete. In fact they are today obsolete. It is about 20 years working in the same manner. Windows, buttons, mouse's click - I think it's enough. At least I am really bored.
5) NextGen UI. Not GUI but UI. A core of the nextgen UI will be an AI
engine. Also see p. 4, we may think about VUI - virtual environements,
you can run all your preferable GUI simultaneously. Or any other today predefined UI (eg. cli).
6) What about windows (parts of a graphical screen)? Nothing. If AI will be in the core you will need windows only for watching video and playing games.
Finall remarks: It is not a project only an idea. My intuition tells me that there is a time for changes. Time for swimming in deep water.
recommend some really good performance analysis tools? Top is not good because it has problems.I am looking for some products like collectD, collectl, or something else comparable.I need something that will look at tasks, cpu, memory, disk usage, interrupts, priorities. If I am missing a tool listed then let me know.I am looking for something that can display the results graphically.
