I have a RH5 box and develop on Windows. I'm looking to mount the root dir of the RH machine just for ease of integration and automatic deployment to the linux box. I'm using WinSCP at the moment but that (from what I can find) only opens a window, which isnt accessible from eclipse.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to find a software which could map sftp/scp services to a windows drive letter. I know there are quite a bunch of those available, but i haven't found a single one which could run with SYSTEM or Netservice privileges or have decent command line options so i could elevate the program myself. The mapped drive should be available for other services running on the same server.
Most of the programs (sftp netdrive, expandrive, etc) have only option to startautomatically only when someone logs in. Because of that they are useless to me.Their inability to handle non-interactive starts is a bummer too. FTP->SFTP wrappers don't count as solution despite of integrated windows support for ftp drives. The way they are handled in windows makes ftp mapping unusable without some external ftp drive mapper software.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have 2 USB drives connected to an XP machine that I rotate twice a month for backups. On my CentOS box, I have that drive mounted at /home/backup using cifs.
Because the drive is mounted on the Linux box, Windows XP complains when I try to "Safely Remove Hardware". As a result, I have to "umount /home/backup", then "Safely Remove Hardware". After connecting the new drive, I then have to "mount /home/backup" in order to use it again on the Linux box.
Now, this question may be a Windows XP question, but I was wondering if there is anything I can do on the Linux box first. Is there anything that can be done on either end, so that I won't have to "umount /home/backup" first?
I have a friend of mines computer that is hosed and gets the BSOD. He has pictures of his grandson on there that her really needs before I fix it. Is there a way to mount the main windows partition while running the Live CD? I have tried it and get an error but I am not able to get it working. Does anyone else know any other tricks I can do to help get my friends pictures of his grandson off there?
View 7 Replies View RelatedThe software: Ubuntu Server Edition 9.10.The wetware: A programmer doing his best (read: ignorant, shitty) as an ad-h.When I plug the USB thumb drive in, the install OS gives it a drive letter -- /dev/sdb -- and it pushes the original /dev/sdb down to /dev/sdc. The installation works without a hitch, and GRUB2 installs, dutifully pointing the root at /dev/sdc1 instead of /dev/sdb1.I let GRUB2 start normally ("drive not found"), holding the <shift> key to get to the "rescue>" prompt.From there, I issue "ls" to discover that GRUB can NOT see /dev/sdb, and I can tell that because what is showing up as (hd1) does NOT have three partitions as it should.GRUB2 sees a total of 16 drives, not 26, and one of the drives it sees is "fd0" (there is no floppy drive).Issuing commands like "set prefix=(hdx,y)" and "root=(hdx,y)" have no effect as, I think it's just pointing to the (reiserfs)content drives and this GRUB2 tells me "unknown filesystem".I did try them all in vain, hoping that maybe I'd find a kernel somewhere.I used the "rescue" mode of the Ubuntu installer (the USB thumb drive) to get to a root prompt.From there, I mounted /dev/sdc2 (the "shifted" /dev/sdb2) onto /mnt, I mounted /dev/sdc1 (the "shifted" /dev/sdb1) onto /mnt/boot,and then I chroot'ed to /mnt.I edited /boot/grub/grub.cfg, editing every instance of "root=(hd2,1)" to the appropriate UUID for the "real" /dev/sdb1. We originally had this server functioning by putting / and /boot on the SS SanDisk, which caused no problems during installation because /dev/sda doesn't get shifted.We then figured it was a good idea to put our OS files on something with failover capability. And that started us down this crappy "shifting drive letter" path.Can I control which drive letter the USB thumb drive gets assigned during the install process?If I could make it be /dev/sdc then I wouldn't be facing this problem.An alternate solution would be to know the cryptic GRUB2 commands that I can issue from the command prompt post-install, pre-reboot.But I'm wondering if that will ultimately work at all considering that GRUB2 couldn't see /dev/sdb at all.

I have been trying to share folders from my main PC which is running Ubuntu 10.04. I have been able to figure out Samba enough to get my a couple of folders shared, but I have been unable to share any folders which are on my external harddrive. After entering the path in my smb.conf file they appear on the network but I am unable to navigate to them. When trying to navigate to them through the network folder on the pc they are actually connected to I get an "Unable to mount location: Failed to mount windows share" dialog box. On the windows pc I am trying to share with I get, "Windows cannot acces \Josh-Desktop

I downloaded centos from their official bittorrent.It contained two iso files and md5sum.txt,sha1sum.txt and sha256sum.txt and also md5sum.txt.asc,sha1sum.txt.asc and sha256sum.txt.asc.Now when I mount iso file to virtual drive there is no autoplay option.Can you tell me how to install it.I dont see any setup file?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI can not find my hard drive letters in ubuntu. In the "computer" window it just shows it as "file system". I want to run chkdsk on another hdd that I connected to the computer. It shows up as 2 icons, one called "256 GB Solid-State Disc:256GB Filesystem and the other called "256 GB Solid-State Disc:System Reserved. This disc was installed in another computer as the only hdd and I had problems with the computer so I removed it and installed disc drive. I want to check this ssd here in ubuntu to see if there are any bad sectors etc. All the instructions I can find say to Type "Run chkdsk /[drive letter]" (without quotes) in the terminal win. I entered "sudo lshw" and the drive shows as "*-disc:1" I tried using 1, disc-1 and *-disc:1 as drive letters , example, "Run chkdsk/1" (without quotes), and I get command not found for all 3. There must be a drive letter to these discs as in windows I would guess, it appears that way as I search the net. NOTES, this computer has ubuntu 10.04 installed only and has 3gb native sata mobo, no microsoft at all. I want to check the quality of this ssd as much as possible and can overwrite or delete any and all files on it, reformat it etc. If it checks out good, I may remove the existing hdd on the computer and install this one as the only hdd and install ubuntu and use it a while to make sure it works fine, then remove it and install it to the original computer where i wanted it in the first place. That computer has win7 ultimate on it, but what matters is that one has the 6gig native sata mobo and that is where this ssd will work at its fastest

I had a script that would connect using smbmount with my normal user account and then mirror my home folder to the external network attached hard drive with rsync. It seems that rsync needs to be run as user account, not root, to work properly.Some of the setup info for getting this running in Kubuntu Karmic was from this article:
However, smbmnt does not exist in *buntu 10.04. Is there any other way to connect NAS drives as non-root user that is relatively secure? I spent all day yesterday struggling with this and still haven't found a solution.
My wife's XP has crashed and I need to save files. I've discovered the command to mount the hard drive - unfortunately I need to force the mount, but I can't do it because I have to be in root. I can see the root user in the user list, but when I try to switch I can't access it. How I can do it to back up my wife's files. I have Kubuntu 8 and KDE 4.1.

For instance, if I have a thumb drive with the volume name of "SWORDFISH," how do I have Linux mount it at /media/SWORDFISH? I'm aware that this can be setup in FSTAB, but that requires that I know the UUID of the device beforehand and that I take the time to set each external device up in FSTAB first. That does nothing for me when I have a thumb drive that has never been plugged into my computer before.
This seems to be setup by default in Ubuntu/Kubuntu, but is not working for me with a fresh installation of Debian Squeeze and KDE4. I've spent the past 2 hours Googling for a solution and have turned up nothing. UPDATE: My results are inconsistent. Sometimes Debian mounts devices to mount points based on the volume names, and other times it gives them generic mount points (e.g. /media/usb1).
Windows XP Laptop hard drive is stuck in a hibernated mode. Will not let me access it through Windows, period.
I loaded Ubuntu Live on the suggestion of a coworker in order to retrieve my important files by hooking up the Windows HD through a USB adapter (Inland).
Ubuntu recognizes the 160GB HD, but refuses to mount the drive because "Windows is Hibernated." I Know my disk is hibernated, I need a way to get my important files from the drive...

I've just installed ubuntu 10.10 (64bit) on my 1TB drive where as I have my windows drives on a seperate 2x 1TB drives in RAID and am not exactly sure how to mount it.
I am not finding it under computer or under NTFS configuration tool and when I click mount under storage device manager it does nothing, although does detect the RAID array as /dev/sda2

View 5 Replies View RelatedNew 10.10 desktop installation on an Acer Aspire 5515 32 bit Vista Home Basic/ 3 GB RAM. There was no option during the Ubuntu installation to select the Windows partition/drive for access via the Ubuntu installation, and the drive does not now appear in "Places." The reason I used 10.10 was because the 10.04 installation on the same machine also would not allow mounting of the Windows drive. However, there was an option to select the Windows drive during the 10.04 install. Couple of things I noticed that were "different."
1) During the 10.04 installation (over which the 10.10 install now resides) there was an option to select either or both of the two user accounts - both administrative - in the Vista installation. I hadn't noticed that before on previous installations. I choose both accounts for later importing, but, again, there was no option to mount the drive upon the finished Ubuntu installation.
2) There could be an issue with what I did with the partition/naming on the Vista installation. Upon restoring to factory settings, I deleted the (10 GB!) restore partition and resized Vista to occupy the newly opened space. But the GRUB entry for Vista says "Windows Recovery Environment" instead of "Windows" or whatever it usually does.
Everything else about this dual-boot installation system is just fine: everything boots and updates and so forth. But I really need that Windows drive to mount so that my friend's kids can import iTunes and other files from Windows to Ubuntu. I also want to be able to run Avast scans on Windows from Ubuntu. I did rummage around a bit by way of locating a solution for this problem, but I can't find anything which "works" or is on point.
On this LAN we have: Windows 7 desktop, 192.168.1.2 Ubuntu 10.04 desktop with ext4 filesystem, 192.168.1.5
On the Windows 7 system, how do you mount a Ubuntu "/home/myHomeDirectory" (ext4 filesystem) as "drive U:" ?
So that U: => 192.168.1.5:/home/myHomeDirectory One possibility is a commercial product called ExpanDrive.

View 4 Replies View Relatedno entries exist in the /dev folder for hdc,cdrom,dvd, or any other drive or drive type than hda. The only other similar device is sg0 which doesn't work either. I have tried every variation of mount I can find with every available drive and drive type and nothing works, but this is the drive I installed FC14 with, and it installed perfectly (except for forgetting where it came from!!)Do I have to install a module or recompile the kernel just to get linux to recognize the drive it came from?

Also on a slightly different issue but still mounting related I have my HDD partitioned into four main drives (not including swap etc). They are my Windows drive, a seperate storage partition formatted for Windows, my main linux drive and a seperate parition for linux storage.
I want to have my Windows drive, my Windows storage drive and my linux storage drive all mounted on boot. I tried adding these to fstab, and they mount fine but again I have no read/write permissions. My fstab looks like this:
