Ubuntu :: Hung Up Computer While Booting?
Jan 22, 2010I recently installed Ubuntu on my computer, and today after hooking up the internet for the first time it asked me to update. I clicked install, then restarted the computer.
While booting up it hangs up after the following is displayed:
fsck from util-linux-ng 2.16
/dev/sda1: clean, 149460/2400256 files, 984175/9582764 blocks
I've tried ctrl-alt-delete, it restarts, asks me how I want to reboot, and whether I choose generic or recovery mode it still hangs up here. What can I do to be able to access my computer again.

Oct 31, 2010I upgraded a machine this morning from 9.04 to 9.10 and it went off without a hitch. I then began another upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 and it appears to have hung. Everything worked fine up through getting new packages, but when installing the upgrades; it got to Unpacking replacement javascript-common ... it opened a terminal window and stopped. It still says about 20 minutes remaining but it's been saying that for about half an hour. Is there any way I can get it to resume? What do I do now?

Aug 9, 2010My computer was getting slow. I know I had a problem with flash for sure. I was thinking it was because I haven't done a dist-upgrade in a while and there were a lot of updates.
So last night I backed up all my important data and did a dist-upgrade. Well now IceWM no longer shows and it just boots to command line. Not the first time I've done that.
Anyway, when I run 'apt-get -f install' I get hung up with errors on Samba.
Errors were encountered : /var/cache/XXX...samba_2%3a3.4.8~dfsg-2_i386.deb
I tried to remove samba but was unable to and 'dpkg -r --force-all samba' returns a processing error.
The error states that it can't locate File/Temp.pm in @INC.
I am sure someone with more knowledge could easily salvage this. Funny, I have been running sid for 5-7 years now and it has given me very few problems. And pretty much every problem has originated from my hand. Typing the wrong thing, accepting the wrong option, or accidentally deleting the wrong folder.
Server :: XEN Machine Hung Sometimes Caused By Java?
Jul 23, 2010I have several xen virtual machines but the issue is occurring only on the one of them. Sometimes (4 times per month) the server hung. I can ping this server on the network but I am not able to login to server using local console or ssh session.

I sounds like the issue is caused by some Java application. But I am not sure is this message is related to root cause or the Java is impacted as a result of issue.
Could you help me with this? I need more details regarding error message described below and I also need to identify the root cause and resolve the issue. Is there any way how to determine which Java application is causing this issue?

May 26, 2011I opened a VM in VirtualBox and it hung up (I think that the VM itself hung up, not the OS inside) and it can't be killed, it just sits there, consuming 100% of one CPU core and not redrawing itself.The worst part is that it causes any program that lists running processes to hang up the same way. When I run, for example, ps or ksysguard from the command line, they hang up and can't be killed using ^C.I wonder if there's a way to fix this other than rebooting (not that I have much apps open, but I'm still curious what happened here)?

Mar 6, 2010i was adding another disk to my raid 5, all was going well it started the reshape, got past the critical zone, worked for 20mins, but now it seems to have crashed.When i cat /proc/mdstat, or mdadm -D /dev/md0, those programes hang and dont print anything or return.from my kern.log i can see that there was an error on a disk, the raid array removed it, was going to continue the reshape but finished immediately. Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade Hung Now System Unbootable
May 4, 2010I tried running an upgrade from 8.04 LTS to 10.4 last night, and things seemed to be going smoothly. The upgrade progress was nearly complete, and I wandered off for a while to let it run. When I came back, I had nothing but an orange screen and and unresponsive system. I left it alone all night with the hopes that something would happen, but this morning nothing had changed so I hard restarted the system.
Ubuntu 10.4 appears in GRUB, but the system cannot boot and exits with a kernel panic and the message "vfs unable to mount root fs on unknown-block" I was able to boot to a 10.4 LiveCD, and I can browse all of my files from there. What can I do to get this system back up an running? I have dozens of user account and a lot of customization (it acts as a webserver with a wiki for a gaming website running on it, among other things), so I really really don't want to do a fresh install and lose all my data and customizations.

Just about any program that deals with any significant IO will fall into uninterruptable sleep. For example here are two instances of dd. The first time it hung in uninterruptable sleep and the second it was completely fine and performed as expected.

Monitoring disk I/O with iotop indicates normal performance for most of the time then all the sudden the read/write drops from ~60-80MB/s to 1-2MB/s. This happens for just about any program I run. It is not easily repeatable since it seems to randomly happen. My limited knowledge led me to believe that it could be a symptom of the old SLED 10 OS that i was running so I upgraded to openSUSE 11.4 earlier this week with no change. I have changed the journaling to ordered and the I/O scheduler to deadline as well as cfq to no avail.

Dec 23, 2010My computer got hung up restarting after an update yesterday so I switched it off and back on, which led to the error message "No init found. Try passing init= bootrag", looking that up I found a thread that recommended running fsck to fix the errors.
I first went to disk utility and did the check filesystem and repair button but that just had a pop-up that said "File system is NOT clean." So I went and tried fsck on the drive which gave me the error message "fsck.ext4: Device or resource busy while trying to open /dev/sda1 Filesystem mounted or opened exclusively by another program?"
Figuring this may have been caused by the disk utility I restarted and tried fsck again without opening any other program, and I still get the same error message. What is causing this? Swap? What can I do to get fsck running to fix the original problem?
