Oct 24, 2010I use jpilot on opensuse 11.3 64bit to sync pim data with my Palm Treo 680 via bluetooth. This worked fine until today. Now I get the following error message when I try to sync: Syncing on device bt: Press the HotSync button now dlp_ReadSysInfo error Exiting with status YNC_ERROR_PI_CONNECT Finished.
The last successfull sync was on the 20th October and today is the 24th October. I did not change any settings in jpilot or on my palm device. So I guess there must have been an update of opensuse which causes this error. But I do not now how to look up the updates during this period or how to undo them. Was there an update between the 20th and the 24th Oktober, which might affect either jpilot or bluetooth functionality?

Sep 10, 2010I've got Ubuntu One syncing a single 25MB folder on 4 computers. On one of these computers, the ubuntuone-syncdaemon process constantly pegs the CPU, using from 50-80% long after any sync-able files have been modified and successfully synced. The process is only using 8.9MB of RAM.
Specs:
Ubuntu 10.04 (lucid)
Kernel 2.6.32-24-generic
1000.8 MB RAM
Pentium 4 2.53GHz
Free disk space: 280.9 GB
System monitor shows 56.8% total RAM usage, 15.4% swap file usage.

"Stretches/squeezes" the audio stream to match the timestamps, the parameter is the maximum samples per second by which the audio is changed. -async 1 is a special case where only the start of the audio stream is corrected without any later correction.Searching the net makes one believe that this command is just some sort of magic.People just put it in the line and it just works. Isn't that nice?
It says nothing about how to change the TIME the audio starts syncing. Like do I want it to start 5 seconds delayed? Or what about 5 seconds sooner?What if the audio gets more out of sync as the video goes on? Can I slip it a little at a time? What? No magic?No one mentions a file that already has badly synced audio.So what -async 1 really does is simply start the audio at the beginning of the file. LIKE AS IF THAT ISN'T STANDARD PROCEDURE?So what is the exact solution to syncing a messed up video? And why can't it just do the proper "timestamp" sync in the first place?No docs, no info and you are left out in the cold.

So, I mount the directory on windows using the command mount -t cifs . in Linux system.
Then I execute rsync ....
Everything is OK, but rsync prints out

rsync: chown "/mnt/windows/A/readme.txt" failed: Permission denied (13)
I want to sync the directories without changing ownership.

Aug 25, 2011While coding Python, I tend to save files very often (I have a pretty high code->test->code->test->... frequency). I hate when Linux syncs my changes to disk everytime I do a write.
How do I configure Linux so that it keeps file writes in memory for a certain period of time/number of writes?
To make this any useful, of course reads to not-yet-fsynced files must be from memory (so that the Python interpreter always sees the latest contents). Extra credits for background-fsyncing that doesn't block other writes/reads going on at the same time :-)

Jun 24, 2010Migrated my wife to Linux when her old computer broke. She has an old iPod (one of the first ones to show video) that has music and playlists on there. I know how to sync podcasts to my iPod shuffle with gPodder and GTKpod. But how would I sync up files with her iPod? Also, what program would I use to automatically sync the iPod with any music dropped into her Music folder? This should be as painless as using iTunes or she won't do it.

Is there anyway to guarantee that the time keeps synchronizing with the network more frequently? does it make sense that the offset grows so fast? Am I doing something wrong?

Eventually I just decided to be sure master received all the 'experimental' changes then I deleted the experimental branch and made a new one. So this question is turning into a few questions suddenly:
1) How do I match up branches but keep them separate?
1a) Is that bad practice to not just make a new branch?
2) Why were the branches not the same after after one merge?
2a) Am I only supposed to call a merge on the one that I want to have all of the changes?

General :: Having Music Library In Sync On Several Devices?
Jun 24, 2011I have several devices (server, tower, notebook, android phone). I want to have my music library in sync on all of them. So what I thought of was a revision control system that just takes care of CRUD actions (or rather CRD). Maybe it could keep track of the files using their initial name and tracking any renaming or deletion. All popular software I know (git, svn, cvs, ...) is out of question because they save too much overhead (they diff the binary files).
Streaming doesn't work either for me because I don't always have an internet connection. Synchronizing the music using tools like unison is very inefficient too because I write metadata to the files so their hashsum, timestamp and size change constantly. If there is a diff or sync tool that ignores minor changes in size and ignores timestamp and permissions and so on, it would maybe be fine but I don't know one.

Oct 4, 2010I have 2 Mounts /mnt/Movies and /media/Movies, mnt goes to a network drive that is mounted via cifs and media is also a network drive mounted via NFS. I normally keep drives in sync using rsync and have done so with these drives. But for some reason there's a bunch of files that on /media/Movies that just wont copy over to /mnt/Movies. I've tried touching the files and then running rsync with the whole file option it picks up the files need to be sync'd but they don't appear.
I've tried using cp on the missing files but the files just never appear but it does take about the right time for the prompt to come back indicating it would be copying the data. So my next idea was to use mc. I compared the 2 directories and it selects 83 files that are not in both folders, so then I tell it to copy them, and it comes back saying 'target already exists', if I overwrite or update they still don't appear. I've unmounted the shares, reboot the server and both network drives and run the network drives disk check but nothings helping. I'm trying to avoid deleting the folder and just rsyncing everything again.

Nov 3, 2010(Ubuntu Linux server, 64-bits)I was troubleshooting a problem with a file (~3.0 GB) which I had just downloaded, but it was failing the integrity test, when I discovered something really unusual.First this is the MD5 of the file after download, which didn't match the expected value:

Some time passes, nothing should have changed the file during this time, but when I went to check the file again:
~% md5sum media.iso
a5b97c5016afb39bd67ccfc3fa6ca59e media.iso
This was really unexpected. Since I have a lot of RAM, I suspected this was the effect of caching and something was going awry with it. I decided to retry with the whole file from disk, for my surprise:
~% sudo sysctl -w vm.drop_caches=3 # This linux command invalidates
vm.drop_caches = 3 # everything in the memory cache.
~% md5sum media.iso
2992aa6270f6e1de9154730ed3beedc1 media.iso
I redid it and now it seems to stay consistent, although this still isn't the value I was expecting. Certainly, the contents in memory cache were different from the contents on disk.This is the big problem.To fix the download, I created a torrent on the source machine and opened it in the target machine. Five 1MB chunks out of ~3.0GB failed integrity check. I used the torrent to fix these file chunks and how the file integrity is ok.The problem now is to determine where the data got out-of-sync.
I tested the memory with memtest86+, all but the bit fading test. I was expecting to see some failing memory module, but there wasn't anything. Everything is ok.Filesystem is Ext4, over LVM2, over a 3-disk RAID5 array.Ext4 is considered stable, and if data were inconsistent between disks, mdadm would have warned. But there is nothing in the logs. S.M.A.R.T. error logs are clean, the disks are new (have less than 30 days of "power-on-hours").I'm looking for information about any data-loss bugs in my current kernel (2.6.35), but there doesn't seem to be anything, as far as I looked.what else I could check, or where exactly could be the defect/bug?It is a Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit, Core i7 930, 6 GB non-ECC RAM.
Update: I confirmed that the files are being correctly written to the disk, the pages are being altered after they are read from disk, while in memory. I did a lot more memtests (I left it doing bit fade test overnight),and still nothing. All memory modules seem ok.Some more tests:

~% cp media.iso tmp[code]....(direcat is a version of cat that reads with O_DIRECT, that is, bypassing page cache)There is a clear pattern: it always happens to the 2nd byte in a 16-byte alignment. In that byte, almost always the bit 4 (LSB) flips to one, but there was one instance where bit 2 flipped to zero.

Now is that a error? I didn't press Ctrl-C or anything like that, it just finished that way. I have a local yum repository and I use reposync to sync up my local repository with the Red Hat network. Everytime I pull down the updates from Red Hat I used createrepo with no options but wanted to try the --update to see how much time it would save. Anyone have any ideas why it is it was "Killed"
