I just installed slackware on my pc. The installation went fine (I think). When I am trying to turn the computer on, I am asked to type the "host login". As I can remember I didn't write any username, or password. But as it seems, I have to type this in to login. I tried with "root", then this comes up "root@host:^#" if this is right, what should I type here to get further...

While I was installing some packages, the power in my street went out (uncleanly killing my system) ... unfortunately Kpackage was open at the time of the power outage. Now when I try to use KPackage, I get "Login Problem, Please Login Manually" ... which does not allow me to login using either the root or user's password. I have rebooted my computer many times and have even run a 'reiserfsck /dev/*** --fix-fixable' on my system, which did not repair the problem.
I have researched this error, but have only found responses that people suggest changing the KPackage behaviour from 'su' to 'sudo' ... ; while this does work, it feels like a 'putting-a-band-aid-over-a-warning-light-so-I-can't-see-the-warning-light-anymore' kind of 'fix?' which isn't good as it would enable anyone using the system to add or remove packages without thought or consequence. What I would prefer to do is actually fix the problem so that proper root password entering is again required to add or remove packages, so my question is:
1. Does anyone know if KPackage 'locks' out a file(s) on the system which may be preventing me from logging into the program correctly, and if so what and where the file(s) may be?
2. Can I delete any kpackage (profile?) file to gain normal login behaviour again?
3. Is this a permissions error?, has something in users/groups? been broken that I can look into?
4. how I may be able to properly repair this KPackage login problem on my system?
I want to set up a special user, when this user login in locally or remotely, a special program will get run for him. ter this program exist normally or not, the telnet connection should close

The new /bin/login program (from the shadow package in a) on SL13.1 no longer accepts the GETPASS_ASTERISKS value in /etc/login.defs.
I want to recompile the old SL13.0 version and replace the new SL13.1 version with the recompiled old SL13.0 version.

View 4 Replies View RelatedLet's say that I have a customized Bash prompt stored as a PS1 variable. My variable gets read every time I invoke a login shell, i.e., when logging in in one of the standard virtual terminal or by invoking xterm with the -ls parameter.
However, when I just invoke the terminal without specifying that it is a login shell, I just get something like: bash-XXX$ as a prompt.
where should I place my PS1 variable so that it could get read even on non-login shells?
I often use the virtual ttys and as slackware doesn't by default enable vttys 8-12 I added these to inittab and I can now use CNTRL-ALT-(F8-12) to switch to them, now for the problem. On vtty 6 I can login as myself or root no problem but on vttys 8-12 when I try to login as root I just get "Login Incorrect" but if I login as myself there is no problem I can then su to root, I just can't login as root this is very frustrating as I tend to use the vttys to do admin work so have to be root
View 4 Replies View RelatedI upgraded to 13.1 and can still login with all users via ssh on a headless machine, but now when I try to login to X via XDMCP I just get returned to the login window. I do not have KDE or kdm installed, but rather use xdm. I was having no trouble prior to upgrade and even had an XDMCP session going during the upgrade, but once I logged out I couldn't log back in. I'm not real sure what's going on.

I've disabled the strigi search and "semantic search" in KDE settings but no help. strigidaemon starts every time after I logged in and makes the system slow.(since it scanning the disk, there will a lot of disk IO)

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am having trouble distinguishing between login and interactive shells as they relate to terminals. I understand that a login shell is what is started when you login, and an interactive shell is used by scripts and such. I also get that terminals will use an interactive shell by default. What I don't understand is why interactive shells have no prompt by default. Is their a way to get an interactive shell to inherit the normal PS1 prompt? Is it considered bad to do this? Would it be better to have terminals start login shells, and if so why or why not?
View 7 Replies View RelatedWhen I login into my normal user account under runlevel 3, the following error message is printed to the screen:

I have sometimes wished to place a reminder, to be displayed after I login. And what I did was to write it in /etc/motd or in /etc/issue. But something in the system erases or writes a new motd/issue.What would be the easiest way to have a reminder printed on the console just after login?
View 10 Replies View RelatedGot my Slack running on vostro 1310 for a while now. But just Today... first for what ever reason my wifi stopped to work (at boot time) even though interface was up as usual, driver was loaded, supplicant has not been touched etc. So I wired up a LAN cable and the at boot time I saw an information from eth0 that packet length is 0 and cannot be parsed (great no network at all). Tried to investigate the problem on a different machine, and one of the suggestions I've found was to set router to no security and see if wireless will connect. I thought that it would be a good idea to reboot the machine to attach to the rooter at boot time and no eth0,wlan1 tries to connect to the network and then I get a black screen instead of login window
View 4 Replies View RelatedI had Slim working with the latest -Current updates, but that was with a package I built before updating.
I borked my system yesterday and had to do a fresh install. Now I can't get Slim working.
I tried running the Slim SlackBuild from Slackbuilds.org, and it failed without giving any errors. I figured out that the problem was with this section:
Code:
The strip commands were failing and caused the SlackBuild to exit, so I added '|| true' to them.
Code:
Not sure why this is needed in -Current and not 13, maybe because of Bash 4.1?
Anyway, now the package builds successfully, but Slim won't start. My system just hangs at a black screen after 'Starting up X11 session manager'...Has anybody been able to get Slim working in -Current?

Questions:
What may have caused xfce not to load some modules on log in? How to fix it, to allow a normal login? How to prevent this problem in the future?
Starting with Slackware 13.1, I am having trouble with keyboard application shortcuts in Xfce. Most of the time, they are not set up at login, for example Alt+F2 for Run prompt, and some custom ones. The fix each time is to kill the xfce4-settings-helper process, which somehow automatically restarts, and the keyboard shortcuts all work after that. But this is annoying.
Has anyone else seen this? I found this bug report which seems to match this problem. But there is no fix, and the bug report goes back to Aug 2009. [url]
I'm pretty sure Slackware 13.0 has the exact same version Xfce-4.6.1 but I never saw this problem under 13.0.
I have no idea what happened to my OS(ubuntu10.04).it doesn't give me any option to enter my login name & passwd.i just get a blank(default) login screen.last time when it worked,i was trying to install GTK+2.8,but due to my mistake i deleted glib using cmd (sudo apt-get purge glib)and after that i even tried to launch terminal but it failed to launch.also tried to play media files using vlc but it didn't work.so i tried to restart my os and finally got stuck in the problem.i have no idea what to do,please help.Is there any cmd to see what problem occurred or which package is missing.

I've set up password-less login for user1 on a Ubuntu machine to login automatically into a Fedora box using the publickey authentication method. Everything is working smoothly. Now, there is a user2 on Fedora but he does not have an account on Ubuntu.
I tried to login as user2 from Ubuntu to but got the following error :
Code:
Predictably neither scp or sftp work either. I have several questions as a result.
1.Is the SSH server rejecting user2 login because I am inadvertently using user1 keys (as I am logged in as user1) ?
2. Do I need to have a user2 account on Ubuntu and public/private key authentication setup with Fedora for user2 to be able to login ?
3. Is there a method I can use to password login as user2 from Ubuntu to Fedora (even though there is no user2 account on Ubuntu) AND still keep password-less login for user1 or do I have to have password-less login for both ?
At present the only way to access the user2 account from Ubuntu is to SSH using the user1 account and then su to user2.
