General :: Installating SSL Certificates / Add Directives To Apache2.conf File?
Feb 15, 2011
I am installing some SSL certificates on my web server, however I have a couple questions, as I'm not familiar with this process
1) I'm not sure which directory to put them in? What is good practice? Is /var/www/secure a good location so long as I restrict access to the secure directory?
2) I am told to edit the following in my ssl.conf file of apache2
SSLCertificateFile
SSLCertificateKeyFile
SSLCertificateChainFile
However, I cannot find this file, ssl.conf. Nor can I find the above directives in my main apache2.conf file. Where is the ssl.conf file? Or alternatively, could I just add the above directives to my apache2.conf file?

I'm trying to improve the functionality of my mouse in my installation of Ubuntu 10.10 desktp 64-bit running inside a VMware workstation VM running on a Windows 7 64-bit host. I stumbled upon some instructions suggesting changing a xorg.conf directive (specifically, change the mouse protocol from "imps/2" to "explorerps/2") which I'd like to try out. However there is no xorg.conf file in Ubuntu 10.10. I tried using Xorg -configure to generate the file and placing it in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, but it seems to make no effect. Using "xinput list" the mouse is still listed as imps/2 even after I changed the xorg.conf file and rebooted. It seems Ubuntu 10.10 ignores the xorg.conf file completely? If that's the case, is it possible to manually specify this setting that used to belong to xorg.conf at all?

I've got a dedicated server using whm/cpanel and there is a particular domain being hosted which contains a very elaborate .htaccess file which is full of mod_rewrite rules, among other things. I've been asked to try and get the contents of this .htaccess file into the httpd.conf (or some appropriate include file) to improve performance.
I've been reading this page and it's really confusing me: [url]
In the file usr/local/apache/conf/httpd.conf I see that there are two VirtualHost sections that appear to be relevant for my domain (which I'll call mydomain.com). The first listens on port 80 and the second is on 443. Seems to me that my apache directives in .htaccess would belong in this section. In the first section I see this:
Code:
In the second section I see this:
Code:
The problem with both of these is that the directory /usr/local/apache/conf/userdata does not exist, much less the full path to either of those files.

I run a web server on Fedora 12, principally using Apache, MySQL, and PHP. I host a variety of sites, one of which is a family website that contains semi-sensitive personal data for several hundred extended family members, who all have access to the database-driven site.
Until now, I have been using a self-signed SSL certificate to encrypt the data as it is read and written back and forth from my database. Family members have simply had to put up with clicking past certificate warnings as they enter the site, as most browsers flag self-signed certificates as bad. It hasn't really been that much of a bother, but I'd love to do it more professionally. I have looked into buying SSL certificates, but it's a site I host for free and would rather find a cheap or free alternative if possible.
So I'm just fishing for ideas to work with. What are some alternatives to using SSL certificates for moderately strong website encryption? So far, I run only one host on the domain, but may eventually need encryption that would support multiple hosts. Or does anybody know a way to make self-signed certificates work on most popular browsers without being flagged as suspicious?

I am trying to install BackupPC on openSUSE 11.4 64 bit.BackupPC is complaining that I am not running the Apache server as user backuppc but as user with id 0 (root)I have the following in the /etc/apache2/uid.conf (which is getting read as I can put a syntax error in the file and it complains):
User backuppc
Group www
When I run either the httpd2-itk (default in rcapache2) or the plain httpd2 processes and then do a:
ps aux
The user reported as running the http processes is root NOT backuppc. On a openSUSE 11.3 machine where I have BackupPC running successfully the ps command returns backuppc as the user running the processes. Is this something others are seeing or do I have some configuration incorrect?

I am trying to set up a lamp server and I would like to change the ServerTokens option from full to prod but when I open /etc/apache2/apache2.conf it's no where to be found. Has the option been moved somewhere else? Same with setting ServerSignature from on to off. I'm starting to wonder if I even have the right conf file.

Installed Apache2 on a Debian Lenny system. copied my old /var/www/htnl over to the new system.
Now when I open my browser to my PC I get the index.html under /var/www not /var/www/html.
I have this in my httpd.conf:
Code:
From what I have read, the DocumentRoot should have pointed to /var/www/html overriding /var/www?
If I use "10.1.1.13/html" it works the way it should.

We have a web server running apache and a custom web app that we log into from a web browser and it ask you to except the certificate and all is well. I now have an user who is using a window server 2008 and he wants to manually import the *.cer file into his browser to be able to login. My question are:
1 - What is the file that is being imported into the browser? *.pem *.crt
2 - I see on our server that we have our certs I believe located in the /etc/pki/tls/certs. The openRADIUS servers that I have created, this is the directory to where it is stored. Is this the typical placement for certs.
3 -If the files is a .cert or *.pem than could I use openssl to convert them to the appropiate *.cer file for IE7

I am fairly clueless when it comes to open vpn configuration file. Though I should have some understanding to execute the fix if it is available.
I have a ovpn file that is created by my organization (so theoretically there should be nothing wrong with it) containing not only the typical connection information, but also my CA key, certerficate/Public and certificate/Private key. I was able to locate these keys using the standard text editors.
When I follow the procedure to import (Right click on Internet Icon --> Edit Connection --> VPN Tab --> Import) none of my keys were imported (perhaps the import is not complete). I think because of the import failure I was not able to click ok and create the connection.
Is there a method to get around this and get it working? I have been looking for existing solution online but I was not able to find any similar cases with mine.

I have got a nagios server running on my network, The configuration seems to be okay but each time there is a service alert notification, and an e-mail is sent to the contact group, Nagios continuously sends e-mail over and over again. Do anyone know of a way to set Nagios directives to only send one e-mail per alert without it flooding mail boxes.

I want to modify a file like /etc/gdm/custom.conf from the shell or a script.
# GDM configuration storage
[xdmcp]
[debug]
[daemon]
AutomaticLoginEnable=true;
AutomaticLogin=username;
But the idea is that I can add a line to a section and it check if the section is defined, (add the definition if not), the property is defined, let it undefine (erase the line), (and delete the section header if there is no property defined), etc...
I didn't find anything except gconftool-2 but it do not explain how to modify other files. (there is a shema file there).
there isn't a program/script to achieve this, but can easyly be made for every config file, If someone do something like that, with a little database of which markup use each file, it could become really popular.

Been trying to setup my xorg.conf file to have a 1920x1200 screen.Strange behavior: when my X starts up, I see my mouse cursor, can move it around. It's small enough to suggest the 1920x1200 resolution took, is working. However, the rest of the screen remains black. No login prompt.I've looked at /var/log/xorg.conf, no errors. Is there something else I can look at?

I have set up my Ubuntu virtual machine and am trying to adjust the screen resolution because it's stuck at 800x600 presently and there are no higher resolution options. I've looked at numerous similar forms and tutorials online and they all seem to involve editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf. However, for whatever reason, this file seems not to exist on my machine. I found another tutorial on how to add a screen resolution using xrandr --addmode which added the resolution I want to the list that appears when I type the command xrandr, but when I try to apply it I get an error about CRTC 262 failing.
