General :: Command Line Search Tool
Apr 10, 2011This is a bit of a long shot and I think the answer will be no but I thought I'd ask just in case. I have a number of tutorials in html but I want to be able to search for particular information in these files and display that information in the terminal rather than having to go through a browser. Apart from using grep which gives a pretty messy display or having to write a a specially Bash or python script, is there any command line tools that can provide such a function?

Aug 3, 2011This is weird, and I never noticed before, but now I have an application that is borking on weird things like when /etc/hosts is of one file format or another, and I don't even know the difference between the two (google doesn't tell much either). on CentOS 5.5/5.6 x86_64: a which on the following is an interesting tell:
vi = /bin/vi
vim = /usr/bin/vim
both are actually vim version 7.0.237 but sum differently, and although they are both actually separate executables in the stock installs of CentOS I've been building, on most distros, and older versions of CentOS it seems, vi is usually just a symlink to vim - but again, not in these fresh installs it seems. When I create a file with the 'vi' above, it defaults (usually) to "ASCII text" (but not always) When I create a file with the 'vim' above, it defaults to "ASCII English text" (and causes a particular application I'm working with to bork and barf). It seems the OS is installed by default yielding both file types too, as evidenced by the following:

What I'd like to get in the output is one line per unique string and the sum of the numbers for the identical strings. Some strings appear only once while other appear multiple times. Given the sample data below, for the string glehnia I'd like to get 10+22=32 in the result. how to do this either with gnuwin32 command line tools or in linux shell?

CUPS did not see fit to implement this into it's lp package.cgi-...-cgi?lpforms+1In the old days, lpr allowed you to select a font in the command line with -1=fontname. CUPS did not see fit to implement this into it's lpr package.htmIn the old days, printers had fonts installed on them that you could access. Modern printers don't seem to have this. So now I still need to be able to select a font when I print certain text files from the command line but it seems this is impossible. I've been working with instances and lpoptions, which allows me to do a lot of other things I need like orientation and margins and even set the font size, but I still cannot choose a font other than the default.

I'm thinking fiddler, but a unix version? I've heard of things like ntop and iptraf, but I don't think those will help me in this instance.
