I had upgraded from Samba to Samba 3x awhile ago. Which I found out that I didn't need to do because I have to update now 9 large patch releases which I have to install in order. Starting with the first one and I'm having Samba dependencies problems now. The patch releases to install are older than what's currently installed. Hopefully, once I get the conflicts resolved the rest should fall in line.

I was having a problem with a fresh 11.04 install and the VPN software I use for work. I found the fix was to upgrade the software, so I downloaded an RPM, converted it to .deb and installed it via dpkg. The install worked and the VPN software now works, but Package Manager says I have a broken package and wants to 'upgrade' to the older broken one. How can I fix this without breaking my VPN SW again?

I wanted maverick since its stable but he never really asked. The whole thing was kinda a surprise), and Clementine only offers downloads for Ubuntu distros up to maverick. So. Can I/is there a way I can install it anyway? Or am I forced to just use Banshee until the official Update comes out and Clementine is updated in....

I couldn't get the disc to boot up on start up so I got Ubuntu to fix that for me with the handy feature it has on the installation disc.
However, when trying to boot up Ubuntu from the disc, it gives me this error:

Waiting for about two minutes seems to ignore this, however, as it goes straight into the Ubuntu start up screen. However, after being there for a moment the loading bar stops loading and it seems to stop working in general.
The newest version of wine 32-bit (1.1.32?) seems to be a disaster. I had Newsbin Pro working great in Fedora 10. Now this program won't run with wine.i686 on Fedora 12 x64.
I have tried Crossover Linux 8 standard and Newsbin Pro works with that. Crossover is using wine 1.1.18. However that will cost me $40.
How do I install an older version of wine with the dependencies in Fedora 12 x64?
I searched for an rpm and found various flavors of wine rpms. Can I just install that older rpm?
I used to keep a back level kernel on all my systems along with the latest upgraded kernel. How is that done using Yast/zypper? I don't see an option to keep the older version.

I guess that there should be able to install an older version of g++ in addition to the current g++. Furthermore, the current should be the default, while the older is an optional version.
I'm looking to install an older kernel in Maverick - something like 2.6.32 maybe? Just wondering if there's a way to do it without compiling myself. I upgraded my system without checking everything. I use it as a MythTV box and the 2.6.35 kernel breaks my remote control in a manner that appears to be unfixable at the moment, if the forums on the problem are right. I figure an older kernel will get me out of the jam, but I'm not sure how to go about it (there aren't any in the standard repos).
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Sun Fire X4450 running RHEL 5.3. Attached to this server via FC is a Sun StorageTek ST2540 that allows additional storage capacity. In order to administer the ST2540, a software application from Sun (CAM 6.6) has been installed. Part of the install process for this application also installs Java JDK1.6.0_12 (64-bit).
However as we use this hardware as a database server, our database software will not install properly as it requires an earlier version of Java JDK1.5.0_11 to be installed. When I try and install the older JDK rpm package, RHEL will not let me. How can I get both versions of Java installed?
I am trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 on an older IBM laptop from a LiveCD. (Windows stopped working and I thought this would be a great time to try Linux!) When I boot up Ubuntu (which takes forever) it starts up, but I don't think it is recognizing the wireless card (DL 650). One suggestion I got from the net was to disable the acx module by blacklisting it with the statement:
blacklist acx
in the blacklist.conf file.
The next step is to install ndiswrapper with:
sudo apt-get install ndiswrapper-common
The last step is to get the Windows driver (I have it) and put it in a directory. Then go to that directory and type:
sudo ndiswrapper -i AIRPLUS.INF. This is all well and good, but where do I do these things to test to see if it works and ultimately, if it works, to set it up this way permanently? How do I edit blacklist.conf if this is a LiveCD and as soon as I turn off the machine everything goes away? I am not sure that I can install on the hard disk at this point because I don't want to wipe out Windows yet (it isn't my computer). I would like to prove Ubuntu (or maybe Xubuntu) before committing to it. I am also not sure that the single USB port will allow me to install a USB stick version of Ubuntu.

I would like to install Fedora 13 on an older Dell PC (which had at one point run Fedora).
But I plan to download and burn the ISO bootable Fedora CD/DVD on my Windows 7 box.
The question then becomes: Does the 32-bit versus 64-bit distinction have to do with the download and ISO-CD/DVD creation (what OS and hardware you're doing it on)?

I am building a series of custom kernels...for one of them i am using a kernel that is older than my currently installed ones.
I am using rpm to install this kernel and it will not install, period. i don't get why i can't install this....what does it matter that i am installing an older kernel? and why is fedora/rpm designed to not let me do this?

There should be an easy way to get around this, but i haven't figured it out yet. i've googled around, no luck. i bounce between kernel versions all the time without problems on my system, so why is rpm setup for strict versions on a kernel? and is there no way around this, and i just have to delete all three of those kernels, i don't really want to. 2 of them are awesome and i shouldn't have to build them again, that would be complete crap! and i wouldn't have this problem on my debian setup, so why fedora? (i generally think fedora is better)
I've got a MythTV 0.23 backend and I'm trying to get the frontend working on my Fedora box, but by default yum installs 0.24 which has a different database model and so won't work with a 0.23 backend. I've got the RPM for 0.23 but it has a bunch of dependencies so I need to track down the RPMS for those, too, so I was wondering if I can do this in yum? I've seen an old thread about installing a yum-allowdowngrade package but that doesn't seem to be available any more.

1) Originally, my laptop came with Windows Vista. Then I got a SUSE linux 11.0 CD, let it make a partition and installed Suse 11.0. Since Suse11.0 isn't updated any further I would like to change to Suse 11.3 (or whatever is newer). How should I proceed? (I can't find my old Windows Vista CDs and would like to KEEP THE PARTITION, thus formating all isn't an option)
2) In order to make a backup I bought a portable hard drive from iomega (USB 2.0). Then I noticed that it is formated in NTFS. SUSE 11.0 doesn't seem to like it --- what should I do? Can I reformat it somehow?
3) Suse 11.0 doesn't like my sound card. Thus I couldn't Skype or listen to music --- do you know if this problem is solved under Suse 11.3?

But just before I clicked accept after saying switch system packages to kde4 repo (the one in that thread) I noticed loads of the packages were older than those installed. In the list it has installed (available) and lots of them were all highlighted in red, and the installed version numbers were higher than the available, yet I'm running kde 4.6.0.
i uninstalled the latest version of adobe flash cause i dont like the latest and wanted to install and older version such as 10.1 from 11 June, 2010 but i dont know where to download a version of this for Ubuntu or how to install. I use a ZTE 626 USB modem to connect to the internet (and yes, i am in the wilds of nowhere!) which using USB-modeswitch 1.1.0-2 and ubuntu 10.04 works well.
I just upgraded one machine to 10.10 and it included the new modeswitch 1.1.4 which does not work, the modem is never discovered. I searched around and found that this is a bug in the latest modeswitch and apparently if you back down to version 1.1.3 it works.
So, i have two questions,
first, where can i find version 1.1.3 of modeswitch. I have searched and cannot find older version than 1.1.4 as a .DEB file.
second, i do have a really old version of modeswitch (1.1.0-2) on my hard-drive and have been trying to load my older 1.1.0-2 version and am having real problems with it. I remove the 1.1.4 version and its data using the ubuntu software centre and it looks like it properly is removed. I then click on the .DEB file that contains 1.1.0-2 and it opens the software centre and installs it (the data seems to be automatically loaded as i never have to install that). I then search for modeswitch and the version that has been installed is the newer 1.1.4 one, not the older one i clicked on. I am confused as this computer is not attached to the internet but it seems to find the newer version from somewhere, uses it and therefore does not work. I presume the version 1.1.4 is cached somewhere and i am not able to clear it out.

From reading this, i do understand that there is a problem, After reading this bug fix I tried editing the config file for the modeswitch modems and changing all of them to the format indicated, but no joy.
I'm using Ubuntu 9.10. Wanted to install an older version of AdobeReader and found it as a tar.gz file.Unzipped it and instructions said to run the "Install" script which I did with the follow commands:
# chmod 700 ./Install
# ./Install
It setup a /usr/local/Adobe/Acrobat 7.0 file but I don't see anything in the /bin/ directory. What did I do wrong here?
