I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on a partitioned dell laptop which I plan to replace soon. Then I hope to install Ubuntu in a partition, same as at present. What is the best way to transfer my software and files to the new machine? I can follow simple command line instructions but am a GUI slave at heart.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI just made my first RedHat Enterprise v5 installation, the thing is that i have on my network a windows server that i use for storage, i want to be able to share files between the windows server and the RH server, i already edit the smb.conf file and put my workgroup name, but i still cant see my the windows server. When o try to connect using the connect to server option it says, "could not open the location 'smb://server_ip_address/' Unknown error code: 46", i can ping the windows server
View 5 Replies View RelatedJust go myself a new computer and thinking of how set it up. I have win7 HP and will probably install at least some version of Ubuntu on it shortly to have dual boot. Might come other Linux distros too in the future. I have a 1TB HDD and my question is what's the smartest way to share files on all OS's? In what format?
I was thinking of ~100GB for Windows for apps and games etc. ~20-50GB for Ubuntu and some third partition, where I store my common files like media, pics, docs, downloads and stuff, taking the rest of the free space.
What filesystem should the shared partition be? Is there some smart way to get windows home directories and linux home directories to point to the same place on the shared partition or would it be recommended to just keep them separated?
Does deleting files using the Ubuntu One web interface delete the files stored on my computer?

The disk will not start up, if I restart and try to boot from load i just sits there and says boot from cd. The disk drive plays music cd's fine, so i dont really know what the issue is.
I dont know that much aboutut ubuntu. a tech friend put it on hard drive he gave me after mine crashed. also i should ad that i took the disk to someone else's house that haswidnows installed and the disk worked just fine, so its not a disk problem

View 12 Replies View RelatedI'm new to the Linux scene. My school computer has linux and it works great, and I'm trying to get into programming, so I figured it'd be good to switch over to Linux (plus I just got a new computer, so it's a good time).
But, I don't know much about how to install it. I've burned a live cd from sourceforge (actually 2: the newest version and one older). I shut off the computer and put the cd in the drive, and then when I turn my computer back on I get the expected menu. I choose my language, and then it brings me to a screen with a few options: "Try Ubuntu without any changes to your computer", "Install Ubuntu", "Check disc for defects", "Test Memory", and "Boot from first hard disk" (plus some options at the bottom of the screen). I've tried every option on the menu, with both cds, but whenever I select anything, it freezes up right away. I've let it sit for 15-20 minutes, and nothing happens, so I'm pretty sure it's not me being impatient
I've also put the disc in while windows is running. When I double-click on my D-drive (in my computer) I get the error message "No cd detected, cannot run cd menu".
I'd be content running a different version of linux, I'd just like to have linux running (although I want it separate from Windows, I don't want Wubi). I'd like to be able to dual-boot, but I'd be willing to give up Windows entirely too. So, any ideas? Anything I can try? Oh, and I'm pretty inexperienced at this, so ask me if you need more details, and please respond in basic terms
How do I install SDL (and other libraries) onto my dual-boot (XP/Xubuntu) computer? With only what came on the Xubuntu disk, I am able to play Oolite at what seems to be 1000 FPS, and Torcs at about 70 FPS.

I want to install ubuntu 10.10 and completely erase HDD but the ubuntu disc won't bootup even when bios is set for cd only. This is older HP pavillion that I have retired but HDD scans out good so I thought i would run Ubuntu only and maybe put MS out of business but not having any luck with install. When booting from HDD error is system 32hal dll is missing or corrupt but HDD C: is 0 anyway. I just want to install so I can play with Ubuntu.

I boot linux from a usb drive so I can carry my distro wherever I go - I've been doing it for quite some time now and it's always worked wonderfully. Problem: This morning my little cousin unplugged the computer WHILE I was booting into linux. Power loss has happened before, but with no ill effects. This time however, it's decided it won't boot. The screen clears, and just as GRUB is about to load, it freezes and the computer reboots over and over.
I booted to a LiveCD of Ubuntu to try and fsck the drive, but it won't mount the volume. I've worked with this install so long, and have customized it so much I **really** don't want to do a reinstall.. What can I do?
I have a situation where I am trying to move some data from a Linux computer to a Windows computer. In all there is 700GB of data to move in about 1.5 million files, so I don't want to do this over the network.My first thought was to use an external USB hard drive and create an NTFS partition and copy the files from the linux computer to mount on the Windows computer. After 4 days of copying without completion I abandoned that idea. I thought the NTFS might be slowing it down, so I created an EXT3 partition. 4 Days later it was still copying. I did some calculations and there was no way the USB 2.0 connection was that slow. I then used ddrescue and cloned the drive to be copied overnight and it took about 12 hours. i was able to mount the USB drive under Linux and access the files appropriately. The only problem is that I can not access that USB drive on my Windows 7 computer. I have tried Explore2fs, DiskInternals Linux Reader, and Ext2 Installable File System For Windows, but none of them is recognizing the external drive.

1. computer A connects to the internet through usb dial up modem
2. computer A & B are wirelessly networked through an ADHOC network.
3. computer B doesnot need to connect to the internet.
I've installed the GUFW. If I enable it I can not see the other computer files. I use static IPs for both. I tried setting a rule but I get stumped were it asks for the port. I'm not all that familiar with ports.
I have a desktop installed with Debian Squeeze and ALL my files are stored there, and is always on. Everyone has an account on this computer.
Each of us have laptops (Debian/openSUSE with KDE4) and sometimes need to use the files that is stored on the desktop. Currently, we are transferring the required files via usb drives.
All the computers are connected to a wireless router that connects us to the internet.
So, to enable all laptops can access the desktop's file, should I
- install smb to all the computers or
- install ssh for the task.
- or are there any better way.
Need to ensure,
- security as ALL my personal info is on the desktop
- easy to use and prefer gui than console as I have young kids using the system.
I'm not familiar at all with the networking functions of linux systems, but I just bought an iPad, and I want to store all my movies, music, and documents on my computer at home, and access them from my iPad. I've heard a VNC client is the best way to go. But will this allow me full access, or just to view the screen? Will I be able to watch movies at the highest framerate with this method?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI regularly need to copy files from a remote computer to wherever I am working. I've ben looking into alias and the .bashrc (or .profile in the remote computer - mac) Can I use scp in these files? I've tried:

But this doesn't work.
Better would be copying when logged into the remote location, but I haven't figured that out in terminal yet, let alone an alias for it. Hopefully it'll be a quick solution!

However, this process (recoverjpeg) continues to find pictures and dump them into my hard drive. I am fighting an uphill battle. Is there a way to stop a program from running continuously? I removed the package, but it continues to find files on my computer and put them into my hard drive, which is a problem.
