May 8, 2011
I am trying to install luckybackup on my ubuntu 10.10 notebook edition. But everytime I get the message box: Requires installation of untrusted packages. The action would require the installation of packages from unauthenticated sources. I press OK, and it fails. I have repeated this a few times, it afails everytime.

I have installed luckybackup software on my ubuntu 10.10 notebook edition. But I don't know how to use it to backup files to an external hard drive. The Hard Drive is a 1 TB Seagate. I don't think that the Destination Drop down menu in luckybackup even shows the External HD.

I noticed a few days ago, that history feature is not working on my ubuntu 10.10 notebook edition terminal. I mean I enter a bunch of commands today and then shut down. Come back again tomorrow and turn on the machine and open the terminal, but up and down arrows won't bring any old commands that I used today.

I needed to switch from Win7 starter to Ubuntu 10.10 remix netbook edition) as Win 7 became more disappointing than it even was I'm praising Ubuntu for many things but having one issue: unable to detect my CD/DVD USB connected external drive, hence impossible to load any software that I was hoping to use with my netbook. ve read on Internet that it apperas to be a bug in the Ubuntu 10.10 netbook version - has anyone have any solution to this problem? I'm willing to experiment a bit as I'm in a desperation to get my software going! cheers

I tried to install the latest luckybackup software, from the official site (it was a deb package created for ubuntu 10.04, which is the version im using) and this error occured:
================================================== ===
Unpacking luckybackup (from .../luckybackup_0.4.3-1_i386.lucid.deb)...
dpkg: error processing /home/john/Downloads/luckybackup_0.4.3-1_i386.lucid.deb (--install):
[code]....
now initially, i had installed luckybackup from the ubuntu repository using sudo apt-get install luckybackup. but it was an old version (0.3.5 i think) so i removed it using sudo apt-get remove luckybackup. I also removed the folder /usr/share/luckybackup/translations and all its contents. but i still get this problem.

I did a fresh install of the netbook version of 10.10 on a Gateway CX2618. I ran all updates and then rebooted. I installed LWO 5.4 from the repository and joined the domain. I put in a kerberos realm (same as my domain) but I don't know for sure if I have a kerberos realm. I successfully joined the domain with the GUI. I rebooted, per instructions.
I tried to login with domain username and password (DOMAINusername). It takes a couple seconds to think and then kicks me right back to the GDM login screen. I have tried several times with the same login and have tried other domain users. It doesn't say "authentication failure" but I should have tried to use the wrong password to see if it would do the same.
I'm stumped. Is there a ppa I need to add? Is Likewise-Open supposed to work with the maverick netbook edition. I saw the previous notice on the Likewise site about OpenLDAP but I thought that was resolved in the updates and no longer in effect. Should I install LWO 6.0? If so, from where? From a ppa somewhere? From the Likewise site?
I can still login with a local admin account.
My ultimate goal is to automatically mount network windows shares for various students, based on their login credentials and using CIFS. I almost had this figured out before this fresh install.

I have a 160 GB Spaced 'HP Mini 1000' partitioned to two 80 GB drives. On one of them, Windows XP is already installed.
I would like to create a dual boot so that the other empty drive has Ubuntu Netbook edition 10.10.
I am a newbie with Linux, well versed with Windows and decided to venture with learning Linux by doing this.
So far, I have just downloaded the Netbook Edition from the following link.

How should I go about installing the Ubuntu netbook edition to dual boot with XP?

I have already installed Ubuntu from an USB drive, however everytime I have to install it on a desktop/laptop or netbook, I have to "burn" the USB again, so I wonder if there is any way to have both (Ubuntu desktop and Netbook Edition) on the same USB drive and choose wich one you want to install at the boot moment.
I usually have the ISO images and copy the files to the USB with the "Startup Disk Creator" utility built in Ubuntu or eventually with Universal USB Installer or UNetbootin...

I was trying to do a yum update from F10 to F11, which I screwed up early, but decided to try to fix along the way. I eventually gave up, and decided to restore the system from backup and restart the process.Thing is, however I try to do this, the HAL daemon fails on bootup, which prevents the system from properly going into runlevel 5. It actually does boot to the KDE login screen, but then refuses mouse or keyboard input.
The file systems look right after restore, and I have used this backup and restore procedure many times successfully. It's just a simple tar copy of the individual file systems: boot, root, usr and var. I also backup /home, but had no reason to restore it. tmp is also a mounted fs.At first, I simply overwrote the existing filesystems with the backup data, but thinking this is what was causing the problem, I recreated the file systems and restored to bare metal. Same problem. After that, i thought that perhaps the problem was that I'd only restored boot, root and usr (not var) not realizing that var is important to HAL, so I then erased and restored var. Same problem. The next logical move would be to erase and restore all four file systems simultaneously, but in addition to being very time consuming, I'm not sure it will do any good. Plus, the problem itself has become interesting.I also know that any sane person would have done a fresh install from the F11 disks by now, but what fun would that be? I can't help but feel there's a simple solution I'm overlooking. Any Ideas?Special bonus question: Due to some hardware changes, the default network device (eth0) no longer actually exists on this box. The actual network device is now eth1. Any idea how I can bring this up in runlevel 3 so I can at least get the damn thing back on the network?

After I installed luckyBackup, two icons were added to the 'More applications' window. The first one launches luckyBackup and works fine. The second one is called 'luckyBackup (super user mode' and is supposed to launch luckyBackup with root privileges. However nothing happens when I click on it. I see that the associated command is 'su-to-root -X -c /usr/bin/luckyBackup'. Typing that command in a shell results in an error as su-to-root does not exist. So... is this syntax ('su-to-root -X -c /usr/bin/luckyBackup') supposed to work, or shall I edit it (how?) in order to be able to launch the application as root?

Old hp notebook (HP520) and want to install some linux distro on it to use it for basic web browsing and word processing. After a bit of research decided to begin with opensuse.
Only problem i cant seem to install it on the notebook. The dvd drive is dead and hence i wanted to install suse through a usb drive (2GB). Downloaded the appropriate live CD and used it to make a bootable usb disk as per instructions on opensuse.org. The drive boots up fine but no matter what i do i the next screen is always a black screen with a blinking underscore and nothing seems to happen. However compatibility reports indicate that suse should install hassle free and everything should work!
Already attempted text mode and safe settings installations. Nothing has worked so far. XP seems to run perfectly fine on it.
Here's the cpu-z report for the laptop if that's any help: report.txt

I have done a clean install of Ubuntu 11.04. My HP ProBook 4520s notebook computer exhibits the following problem. I use the notebook with lid closed, connected to Samsung SyncMaster P2350 23" LCD Monitor. When Ubuntu boots it selects 1024 x 768 resolution. I then go into the display settings and notice that it is set to display the same image on both monitors. If I uncheck this setting, I see the Samsung and can make changes to the resolution settings of both laptop monitor and Samsung monitor, however, when I click Apply, the Samsung I am viewing goes blank. If I then open the laptop lid, it too is blank. After a cold reboot, I am able to get the Samsung monitor to act as a desktop estension perfectly, but not as the only monitor with the laptop screen turned off. Any attempt to turn off the laptop monitor in the settings results in no screen at all.
In the office, I have an LG 19" Flatron monitor, and Ubuntu does not exhibit the same problem. I can boot up with lid closed, and the Flatron works fine as the only monitor and at it's native resolution all by itself. Booting with lid open, and then closing the lid, also results in the Samsung going blank, but probably for the reason that there is no option in power management to DO NOTHING when the Lid is closed.
It seems that Ubuntu have forgotten about people who use their laptops as desktops in this way. I am not happy to run with the laptop open and split screens, as I cannot get the launcher into the Samsung, and everything has to be moved over all the time, is there any work around that anyone may know about?
The HP ProBook uses Intel Graphics, for which there are no particular additional drivers I am told. The problem also happened in Ubuntu 10.10, but before 10.10 I don't recall ever having this problem (from 7.04 thru 10.04)

I'm trying to install 11.3 in a Viewsonic VNB101 notebook.I've been trying a long time now, 11.3 was still in ms6, as I recall. I tried the dd, the imagewriter, kiwi, unetbootin, Win32DiskImager and maybe something more. Lately I'm trying PXE booting, but I cant manage anything. I even gave a shoot to the new grub2 advertised feature, of booting an iso from the same machine. No luck. Maybe its time to mention that I had already successfully installed fedora and now the kubuntu 10.04, which is running ok, but its not suse. The weirdest thing is that I can have a bootable pendrive that looks fine. My other two desktop pc's, boot it and they are willing to install or run live.
I've tried the full dvd (586) version, of course after isohybrid was ran. I also tried many of the factory isos. But the one I'm obsessed with, is openSUSE-11.3-KDE4-LiveCD-i686.iso. All of them where definately checksumed. What the heck is going wrong with this notebook? Bios version is InsydeH20 D0.05T45.55.03, the setup utility in rev. 3.5. Cpu is Intel Atom cpu n280 A friend of mine, installed 11.3 successfully with an external dvd-rom drive, but he lives pretty far and I cant afford buying one of my own. I'm a user of OpenSuse since version 6.3. It is used as my primary OS all this time, on my desktop machines. I wont give up.
