Nov 13, 2010I have a laptop that is a little bit older, and OpenSUSE was running pretty heavy on it with the KDE and Gnome desktops (I installed Gnome, tried it for bit, then wiped it and did a clean install with KDE).
Since it was so sluggish on that laptop, I grabbed a couple live CD's of OpenSUSE with the LXDE and XFCE desktop environments. The XFCE disc doesn't seem to boot at all, which I tried in a couple different computers, and on Virtualbox with the same result.
LXDE worked fine and I installed it just fine, with hopes of switching over to XFCE later, as I like it better. This brings me to my question, can someone tell me what the easiest way is to switch from the LXDE desktop to XFCE?
I found a page in the OpenSUSE site that appears to be dedicated to XFCE, here is the link:

I went there, I clicked on 11.3 on the right hand side, and then clicked on the 1-click install option for X11fce, the first option. It opens the YaST software manager and I followed the prompts, and it finished. All of the packages were installed, except XDM.
I was expecting that the software would install and configure the desktop, and I'd reboot to see an XFCE login. This was not the case.
what the correct, and safe way would be to switch desktops?

There both great, except for one problem: The left click on a program icon in the (pardon the microsoft analogy) start menu launches it unstead of giving me options like 'link to desktop'

Also when I right click and select "undecorate" I cannot retrieve the title bar unless I close the programme and open it again - is there any way around this?

Aug 13, 2010recently i made a bold move to slackware (13.1) i have set it out how i like (gdm, themes etc) but my xfce icon box does come up showing the icons i have chosen the rest look how i want but just not icon box, i add (always into usr/share...) i have tried editing the .theme files with the inherit= section but nope still nothing ,

Aug 12, 2011is it would be possible create a Ubuntu dvd that contains the ubuntu server desktop and alternate install opptions, as well as all four main desktop environments (gnome, kde, xfce, lxde) and unity. since much of the data is redundant between each version cd's it would probably all fit on one disk. then all that would be needed is two disks one for 32 bit and another for 64 bit. i really think that this could work.

Aug 26, 2011I find xcompmgr more than adequate for making a desktop look pretty modern, and I don't like the more extravagentCompiz gimmicks - but there is one thing that irritates when using xcompmgr which someone here might have worked round.
Rounded window borders don't draw and redraw properly when using the Terminal (gnome-terminal and the LXDE and Xfce ones) or system monitor and moving them from their default place. You get this little white botch at the corners. I'm not massively technical and I'm ambivalent about how much more I want to learn as I have plenty of creative outlets already, but I would like to solve this. Somehow xcompmgr is treating these programs as a different class? It's capable of drawing the window borders properly as it is just these two programs that get botched. Possibly this doesn't get noticed as maybe people usually use xcompmgr with openbox and LXDE and their square window borders. I did do a search but there was nothing matching what I saw.

Oct 4, 2014Currently my display is set to 1280x960 at 60Hz, but my monitor supports 1920x1080, which is what I would like to have. Preferences -> Monitor Settings (lxrandr) does not change anything & does not show my desired resolution either. I tried using the Nvidia propietary drivers but whenever I try to switch to them from xorg.conf the X display can't start. right now I am using the nouveau driver. I've seen some xrandr commands but so far haven't been able to figure out what I need to do.
I am on Debian 7.6.0 (Wheezy) amd64:

General :: Best LXDE Based Distro/distro That Supports LXDE?
Dec 15, 2010Lubuntu is nice - but it seems the LXDE version is not as up to date as Fedora LXDE Spin or even Debian squeeze with LXDE installed. I do like Chromium on Lubuntu though... its faster and a nice touch. I am looking for a lightweight 64-bit distribution for my main laptop (it is by no means "old" or "low spec" but I like that Lubuntu starts up in like 2 secs).
LXDE version seems not to be recent (esp in 10.04 version which seems to work more stably for me - with Nvidia drivers etc)64 bit install is currently a pain - requires first install of minimal CD or alternate CD both of which required wired Ethernet, then install of lubuntu from PPA. Native 64-bit support would be nice. Linux Mint LXDE, for example, is also only 32-bit.

I saw a post saying that installing gnome-settings-daemon could fix this, and after installing it the gdm itself was fixed, but now I have this ugly brown background that I can't change. I installed gdm-tweaker, but the wallpaper I set didn't show up. Is there something else I can do to fix this?

Mar 11, 2010Well I have installed lenny from netinstall, with Xfce on a virtual machine, everything runs smooth and I really like how does it work, I just have a little big problem, the resolution is too high, it is higher than the host resolution, if I have to work in the down part of the screen I have to scroll down in host, it is kinda annoying, under screen config (right click>configuration>screen config) for resolution only the default option is available. I have googled and I have found that /etc/X11/xorg.conf must be modified to use another resolution, but I'm not sure of what to change or what to do exactly.
