I have a number of problems with Exaile. In my old windows days, I would try to fix a broken application by uninstalling and reinstalling it. Is that the best way to fix a Linux application that stops working?
I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on a HP Pavillion laptop. Exaile worked fine for a while, but then stopped downloading the Shoutcast station listings.

First off, I have been having disk error problems with Ubuntu, and I think that a file that involves the bookmarks was corrupted. I did remove and reinstall the latest firefox package with Synaptic and apt-get (they do the same thing right?) But I still have this problem: I can not add or modify my bookmarks in the toolbar. I can go to the window to organize my bookmarks but its like nothing is there on the left main view box or the right that shows the bookmarks. If I try to import or restore, it does nothing.
I have two broken shortcuts for Netbeans on section Applications -> Programming.

I know it seems silly, but I can't find the way to handle this inconvenience. Is there a place (like Start> All programs in Windows), were I could find and run all the programs I install?

Obviously, I don't want to do everything manually so I'm looking for ways to automate this process. Multiple distributions (Ubuntu, Red Hat Ent., FreeBSD, CentOS, etc.) will be used, meaning I will have a few Ubuntu installs with the basic set of 30 applications, and multiple Red Hat installs with the same set, etc. So, I'm looking for advice on automating as much of this as I can, even if it means a new form of automation for each distro.

The gui package manager errors out. yum also errors out. I have a desktop with yum-3.2.27 and it installs the same packages with no problems.

I was having a problem with a fresh 11.04 install and the VPN software I use for work. I found the fix was to upgrade the software, so I downloaded an RPM, converted it to .deb and installed it via dpkg. The install worked and the VPN software now works, but Package Manager says I have a broken package and wants to 'upgrade' to the older broken one. How can I fix this without breaking my VPN SW again?

I just installed ubuntu 9.1 on an inspiron 4000. The screen looks like like its been split and I can't see the options to try to change display options. I have uploaded a picture from my phone. It kinda sucks but it's there. I have tried "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg". this gives me nothing but an empty prompt. I have also tried "sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf". this gives me box where I can type but enter doesn't make it submit, just moves down a line and there is no information there like it seems there should be. Then bash broke on me for a while. here's the command i typed while in /bin bash > lessi believe i was in "sudo su" as the moment. i want to understand this because when I typed it bash didntork. i tried to type "ls" after and it didnt result in anything.but thats not all it didnt receive any commands.Was this a crash? and why/how did it fix itself after i logged off.

A faulty installation at Xandros Networks has cause the print service to stop, Adobe Acrobat Reader fails to launch, Open Office is completely gone from the apps menu and there are probably other apps gone haywire.
Xandros tech support rep told me that I should reinstall from scratch. I am wondering since I have Konserve backups of etc, home, and root directories from before these errors occurred, if I can just paste healthy files into the places where they are broken. But I don't know where to begin. I'm not too confident right now about reinstalling xandros from scratch. I WAS confident at Xandros Networks. Now, I have a broken package.
I had to start from scratch a few years ago because of a broken package. I attempted a restore of etc, home and root from Konserve, but the desktop became a mess, so I had to start again completely from scratch. I figure that I don't know exactly what I'm doing, thus I also have Windows which is made for people with slightly lower IQ. I want to be able to use those healthy backups, but I don't know how w/o making a mess.
I have to transfer large amounts of data (>80 GB) over ssh using rsync. Everything is working fine, but the DSL connection where the backup data is sent from will drop once every 24h for up to 3 minutes (switching providers is not an option).
How do I:
Automatically restart the transfer when the connection is back up? Make sure there are not by accident two rsync commands running at the same time?
I installed a Amsynth from Lucid in Karmic using:
dpkg --force-depends-version -i amsynth_1.2.2-1_i386.deb
The reason for installing the Lucid version is because Karmic version is 3 years old and crashes on my machine. The Lucid Amsynth package depends on newer versions of libatk1 and libjack0 than Karmic has, but I thought I would take a risk, and turns out Amsynth runs fine. However aptitude tries to uninstall Amsynth every time I do an upgrade. I think I've managed to put it on hold but now aptitude aborts. How can I tell aptitude to ignore the broken package and carry on.
I modified the file /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo and when I tried to do a yum install on some packages, i ran into "error performing checksum" on all mirror sites. Then I fell upon a comment on this site that gave a suggestion to type this: "yum -y remove yum-fastestmirror" to correct it. not a good command to use apparently since it removed yum and yum-fastestmirror. I re-installed them both but since then there doesn't seem to be automatic software update notifications nor any actions to do so in "system tools" under applications. I can still probably do a yum update but it'd be nice to have the system notifications.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI made a bunch of video files with Thoggen a few years back and now it seems I'm having issues with playback. As the audio and video are intact and VLC, mplayer and xine can all play the files perfectly and ffmpeg can happily reencode the files. I think I need to rebuild the container metadata without reencoding the video or audio streams but I'm not entirely sure exactly how to do this without using avidemux, which won't work for me.

MythTV gives me silent video .....
I've been having issues with yum for a while now. It won't install anything or update without crashing. When I tried to do 'yum update' after doing 'yum clean all' I got the following error:

It updates the first two "momonga" and "momonga/primary_db", but then it crashes with the error.
I am not sure if I should uninstall/reinstall yum, or fix the repo files individually. I don't even know where to start really since I'm so new at using Linux. I'm using Momonga(fedora core) Linux. I've been able to install programs through the GUI add/remove programs, but not yum. I really want to install Wine, but it doesn't show up in the GUI, so I need to install it manually via yum I guess.
I had a working ubuntu 10 on my old laptop. Not sure what's happened but now whenever you start any app, the app starts in the foreground, then immediately the desktop gains the focus. This happens all the time on any app that is either already running or started from scratch. Thus making the system unusable.
