I did the system updates and one package was listed - yum-3.2.28.3 so I installed it Friday. Since then I can't install new packages. The gui package manager errors out. yum also errors out. I have a desktop with yum-3.2.27 and it installs the same packages with no problems.

i'm running debian lenny - latest stable i have recently installed smartcam (mobile phone as webcam over bluetooth) from .deb package , get errors of unmet dependency , but application works like a charm, unfortunately broken dependences block my aptitude , i cant fix them either as latest stable use older versions of dependences even in backports... how do i mark smartcam package as not broken and release my apt?

I thought that if I sent a music file to vlc in this way, vlc would play it. So I did cat song.mp3 > /usr/bin/vlc. At this point vlc stopped working. I looked in /usr/bin and found that vlc had been turned into a music file! So I erased it, and removed it via yum. Success. Then I reinstalled via yum; success. But the messages now are: from terminal:

I installed Fedora 14 recently, in part because I heard that it is more stable than Ubuntu these days.Anyways, I use XeTeX to generate PDF files for my website, and it really is necessary for me. Of course, I installed the texlive-xetex package and its dependencies. However, when I run "xelatex myfile.tex" on a simple and proper XeTeX source file, the program cannot even begin. I get the following output:

When I login, it all works, but it gets to the point where I have to choose my login name, and enter password, but it never gets there. It hangs at the point where it lists my machine name, and then never gives me the option to login. (I updated the plymouth theme just before this happened)
I also installed a little utility from the software center that lets me tweak the login screen, but I didn't make any changes.
Bump, and some more info...
I was able to login a few times by pressing escape when the plymouth was loading (boot sequence), from here, my login name showed up without trouble, but this is not repeatable... When I logged in, I re-installed plymouth themes, and did an update of all software from the terminal (sudo yum update), but this didn't seem to help. As soon as I logged out, it happened again.
I really like Fedora, switched from Ubuntu. Fedora 14 seems more professional, but this is a deal breaker if I can't get to the gui!
Well, it isn't fiixed, could never figure out what was causing it, but I just switched to auto-login..
has anyone else noticed that any program to do with FLV (flash video) files does not work on F15?i can't get mplayer or vlc to play them (totem does it seems) and mencoder and ffmpeg segfault without any useful error message when trying to convert themany ideas? i'm assuming some problem with the rpmfusion codecs or packages?

View 6 Replies View RelatedYesterday my Japanese input on F11x64 broke horribly. I have been using iBus all along, and didn't think I did any upgrades, but maybe there was a restart that picked up something previous. As soon as I hit the key to turn on the input method to type Japanese there would be a python process using 100% cpu, but no keyboard input. After fiddling about reinstalling python, iBus, scim and anthy and anything I else I could think of, I decided to upgrade to F13 to see if it would fix it. (trying to use scim instead of iBus hung the machine during start-up after login (I'm using KDE too if that makes any difference)). I did an upgrade instead of a fresh install fyi...
F13 is no better, and has the same issues with the python process. I have tried reinstalling everything again, as well as trying to avoid scim altogether, and just running iBus and Anthy. (The only other issue that I can think of (that prompted the initial restart) was that my .xsession-errors file in my home directory became huge -> 1.7gb!) Japanese input is crucial to my work (It doesn't even work if the default language of the system is set to Japanese), so hope someone has some ideas on how to resolve this, or even just knowing tha japanese is working for someone on a x64 KDE install would be encouraging...

This has been bothering me for a while. I thought if I waited a dependency would get fixed and the update would work, but it hasn't for a while now. I have included the error when trying to update gcc and the libraries. Skip broken skips everything so no dice there.

3. sshd, telnet, vnc and samba activated (mostly default config)

5. I have tested all those succesfully from WinXP workstation. For terminal session, I used putty.exe and/or telnet.exe
When I worked with the machine (say TestMachine), I noticed some times that the vnc connection was lost, but restarted succesfully. Similar thing happened with ssh. Also the samba connection was lost, but it recovered after hour or two. Then I tested leaving a constant ping on, and it revealed that some breaks happen. But it is not an infrastructure problem, as pingtest on other machine in the same network is OK.
Again, I tried to connect. No ssh, telent, vnc or samba worked. But surprisingly, I was able to telnet to another system first and then telnet to the TestMachine from there. I was able to use it for a while. But then, session was broken and now I can't access it anymore via network. I tried to browse /var/logs but I didn't find anything revealing yet.
Yum is unable to access any packages in the F15 updates repository. When I manually download and browse the repo filename list (http://ftp.jaist.ac.jp/pub/Linux/Fed...ateinfo.xml.gz) it seems that the files are listed as being available from the Fedora *5* address, which is obviously incorrect. This issue seems to have been going on for a few weeks now.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI installed Fedora 15 on top of Ubuntu 11.04 (running in Classic mode, not Unity). First, Fedora took over grub completely and ubuntu disappeared. I tried to restore the Ubuntu option in the fedora grub. It worked (and I also restored ubuntu's own grub later on -with the same result as I'm about to describe), but I still can't log into Ubuntu, because when I choose Ubuntu at boot, and enter my password, it refreshes the same gdm screen as if nothing happened. In the meanwhile, there is an error about gnome power settings at the top right corner, and the gdm screen also looks different than it used to when I had everything intact.
The error reads "Install problem! The configuration defaults for GNOME Power Manager have not been installed correctly. Please contact your computer administrator."
I am trying to run Fedora on my PPC Mac. The mac has a broken internal CD rom drive. I do have a external one but I don't know how to boot it from the external CD drive. I also tried using a backup program called Superduper! (Superduper! is designed to make a bootable backup) but that just copped the Fedora files to my usb without making it bootable.

I just re-installed on a third computer Fedora 12 from the DVD iso that has been used on many machines. But in the past 3 days I am getting the following message. This is on 2 different downloads of the iso also. It hasn't ever happened to me in the past.
Here is the error:
I downloaded the ISO for the network install and burned and booted it just fine. It detected my network card and got a valid ip.When it goes to actually start to install it gives an error saying:cannot retrieve repository metadata and makes mention of some file called repomd.xml
I put the url listed into my browser and it listed all the mirrors and I checked a few of the mirrors to see if they were up and they were.What gives with this? Why doesn't the network installer find the repositories properly?

/etc/udev/rules.d/20-our.rules has worked perfectly in FC6 and F10. In F11 I can't get udev to even look at it, much less execute the udev commands in it. Stat tells me that none of the relevant files have been accessed when I plug in a USB device that udevadm says was processed and which clearly matched the rules.. I reboot with several USB devices plugged in and according to stat nothing anywhere in /etc/udev was accessed during the boot process.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded my x86_64 system from FC8-FC10 using Pre-Upgrade, and here I got some help fixing all the package conflicts that resulted. Following the first reboot after this massive package update, it appears DNS doesn't work in some apps.
I could ping www.yahoo.com, and nslookup www.yahoo.com resolved the name, but firefox and links couldn't. Typing the ip addr that nslookup gives for www.yahoo.com works fine in both firefox and links. Something's obviously wrong with DNS.
I found a workaround for Firefox which is to browse to about:config and set network.dns.disableipv6 = true. Firefox started resolving names after that.
But then I noticed yum is DNS incapable as well. I don't know how to fix it. Here's what I get:

The machine in question has a static ip addr, and I have static nameserver addrs in /etc/resolv.conf, corresponding to the static settings provided by my isp.
I am trying to check spelling in a text document, but gedit (v. 2.28.0) reports every word as incorrect. When I check the "autospell" option, it highlights the entire document. When I try to set the language, the language list is empty. I do have aspell and aspell-en installed, but gedit seems to ignore them. aspell works fine from the command line. The SpellChecker plugin is installed. Anyone has an idea what might be missing? Some env variable is not set correctly? Any other leads? (I am on Fedora 12).
I wouldn't be asking, but I'm tuning this up for someone who isn't command-line-knowledgeable.
