Which is best server monitoring (Traffic ) tool ?
Can you provide some form of monitoring on this server or recommend any server-side applications that could monitor the status, in high detail, including traffic, etc?
We have something on our network that is reaking havoc with our content filter. I am trying to track it down, but so far I have been unsuccessful. We have approximately 500 devices in 100+ different locations spread across 9 states. Looking at each computer is not really feasible.
I need a machine that can sit in between our network and our internet connection and graphically monitor in real time and logs how much traffic each device is sending and receiving. It would need to sit inline so it has to have two nics and be able to pass traffic. The machine also needs to be transparent. Reconfiguration of our routers or workstations is not an option.
I have used ethereal and wireshark before. Ethereal may be a viable option, but wireshark seems to provide lots of information, but no practical way to make use of it. how to set up the box to be a transparent device on the network that will allow internet bound traffic to flow (freely)?
Is there any way to verify if packets being trafficked over a certain port are valid for the service you want to use this port for?
One obvious example that probably clarifies my question:
When I open port 443 (outgoing or incoming) for https/ssl traffic, I don't want this port to be used for say openvpn traffic.
Thus: when someone wants to surf to a website with https, it should be ok but if someone wants to connect to his home openvpn server over that same port, it should be blocked.
I have two Linux processes communicating via a nameless pipe. How can monitor the traffic in the pipe? How can I inject data into the pipe? I have root access and know the pipe inode.

How can I monitor my network traffic sorted according to the "which binary file is using how much"? I can find the total transfer rate in "System Monitor" in Gnome, but what if I want to find for individual process. There are softwares like netmonitor in Windows, but how can I achieve that in UBUNTU LINUX.
GUI application will be nice, command line software will also be fine..
I am trying to list all traffic from 1 IP address but filter out port 1057.I keep getting syntax errors. I've tried:
Code:
ngrep -e host xx.xx.xxx.170 not port 1057
ngrep -e port 1057 -x host xx.xx.xxx.170
ngrep -e not port 1057 -x host xx.xx.xxx.170
etc.
Im running a web server on port80, but i want traffic coming from ip 212.333.111.222 on port 80 to be fowarded to port 9020 on the same server that my web server is rinning at that is my sshd port
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have set up an openvpn server on ubuntu via port tcp 443. The server use a public network and almost every ports are blocked (not 443) So when a client connect to the server, if it send traffic needing a blocked port, the connection cannot been etablished of course. So i d like to know if it is possible to redirect all incoming traffic on the server to an other unblocked port (like 443) to bypass firewall.
I dont think openvpn offer this possibility but maybe with linux it is possible..
I need a simple traffic monitor for Linux, that counts the traffic in a specific wireless network because I have volume restrictions on that one.I tried it using the following iptables rule:
[code]...
iptables -m mac -A INPUT -p all --mac-source <mac-address> ! -s 10.0.0.0/8
where <mac-address> is the router's one. 10.0.0.0/8 is the local subnet. What I actually want is something like --routed-through <mac-address>. Also, is there some way to gather iptables's statistics? Or is there maybe another tool that does what I want (reliable)?
I'm looking for a tool which can monitor whether a process is near limit of maximum open files.

View 8 Replies View Relatedi have done most of the setup for MRTG network monitor tool.
But i m stuck at configuration part.
the actual MRTG guide says following.
I m little confused about what should i put inplace of community@router.abc.xyz.
Quote:
The next step is to configure mrtg for monitoring a network device. This is done by creating an mrtg.cfg file which defines what you want to monitor. Luckily, you don't have to dive straight in and start writing your own configuration file all by yourself. Together with mrtg you also got a copy of cfgmaker. This is a script you can point at a router of your choice; it will create a mrtg configuration file for you. You can find the script in the bin subdirectory.
cfgmaker --global 'WorkDir: /home/httpd/mrtg'
--global 'Options[_]: bits,growright'
--output /home/mrtg/cfg/mrtg.cfg
community@router.abc.xyz
This example above will create an mrtg config file in /home/mrtg/cfg assuming this is a directory visible on your webserver. You can read all about cfgmaker in cfgmaker. One area you might want to look at is the possibility of using --ifref=ip to prevent interface renumbering troubles from catching you.
If you want to start rolling your own mrtg configuration files, make sure you read mrtg-reference to learn all about the possible configuration options.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to set up a Linux box that can act as a router (and firewall later). I have a Debian 5 installation and it has two nics in it. I am trying to use the linux route command to set up a route between the two interfaces. I am finding it difficult to do. Let me explain how I am trying to set up my network: I have the ethernet cable from my modem connecting to eth0 of my Debian box, then I have eth1 connecting to a switch, which I connect all my computers and other devices to. I want to have two different ip address schemes for the devices. So here is my interfaces file:
Code:
#eth0 connects to modem
allow-hotplug eth0
iface eth0 inet static
[code]....
So I am wondering, to get my ethernet traffic from eth0 to eth1 and vice versa, do I need to make it so the Gateway for Destination 192.168.1.0 is 10.1.1.1, and for Destination 10.0.0.0, Gateway 192.168.1.0? I have looked at the linux manpage for route and I am still confused. I have also looked at the Debian networking page, but it is still unclear to me how to do this. how I am to use the route command to get this working? Or am I not even supposed to use the route command?
I have a WAN network that i need to do some analysis on, for the traffic flows. I did lots of googling to figure out what useful tool to collect the packet informations.I found this site [URL]..witch i made great use of to recognize the tcpdum tool. I also have a network simulator on windows platform wich is Opnet Guru, (by the way.. is there a linux version for this simulator?).
MY QUESTION IS: How can i feed the Opnet Guru with the flows data collected with the
Code:
tcpdump
with its different options?
NOTE: in the Opnet Guru invironment there is an object called the profile that is beeing used to customize and genarate data flows with the desired characteristics to simulate the real flows. So i need to feed the Opnet with the fresh data collected with the tcpdump tool (command) instead of using the built-in profile.. i hope i was clear enough..
I've read up some of the posts on this forum, but can't seem to find an answer. I have a web service within an Apache Tomcat instance installed on a Redhat linux server. I only have shell access to the server, and need to monitor outbound network traffic from my web service. Is there a unix command that will allow me to monitor all outbound traffic? I'm thinking fiddler, but a unix version? I've heard of things like ntop and iptraf, but I don't think those will help me in this instance.

I have "Server A" with real internet ip 1.2.3.4 (eth0) and lan ip 192.168.1.1 (eth1) There's also "Server B" with lan ip 192.168.1.2 (eth0), I'm running an Apache Web server on "Server B", so I want to redirect all traffic from IP 1.2.3.4 port 80 (Server A) to 192.168.1.2 port 80 (Server B), using the following rule:
[Code]....
iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp -d 1.2.3.4 --dport 80 -j DNAT --to 192.168.1.2:80 This actually works pretty good, from internet I can browse ttp://1.2.3.4 But the problem is that if I check the Apache logs, all incoming connections seems to come from 192.168.1.1 instead of showing the real source ip addresses (internet ip's) so this is screwing up all my web stats, I've been looking for hours and hours on how to make a transparent redirect, but can't find any info, I know there must be a way because my old WRT54G router which uses iptables could do it.
I need a script that would continuously monitor one port and when it is active (not listening or waiting) execute a series of commands to standard output.I am familiar with netstat but am not good with scripting so

I'm new to iptable configuration. I've set up a VPN using DD-WRT on my router and it works fine. However the VPN company does not allow port 25 traffic (in case of spammers) so now I can't get my emails sent out.
I'm guessing I can add some rules to my iptable so that all traffic except port 25 traffic can go out through the VPN tunnel. And hopefully, all port 25 traffic will go out through the normal Internet connection.code...

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've a server, and I want to drop all the traffic going out with other source port than 80 (apache) and 22(ssh). The reason is I want to prevent my machine sending packets I don't know (i.e. my server scanning networks or making DDOS attacks without my knowledge). The problem are the updates. If I do what I've said, the updates will not work. I want to allow updates, so I need to let DNS traffic (port 53) and the traffic of the updates to go out.
The problem is the source port. This traffic uses a dynamic port (I think like HTTP). Is there any way to specify a source port to do this? If a have a static port to do this, I would drop all the traffic going out with other port than 22,53,80 and this port.

I have a number of computers on a LAN. There are 3 laptops and 1 desktop, all running windows. I also have a Ubuntu server in the garage which servers up files to all those on the LAN. The server is not visible outside of the LAN for security reasons. Now, I want to track all traffic from any computer in my house that is coming and going in and out from the inter-tubes. I do not want to add this as a service to my current server as (a) it is behind the LAN and (b) I don't want to mess with security issues with that server.
I think I could set up a computer (an extra) which is between the modem and the router with two ethernet cards which would be able to monitor all traffic coming and going. This computer would, obviously, be exposed to all potential attacks as it wouldn't be behind the router's firewall. I'm not sure exactly how that would like or what software to use.
is it possible to see the router traffic using a remote system? can those packet headers b modified for marking purpose?
