Networking :: Unix Command Line Tool For Monitoring Outbound Traffic?

I've read up some of the posts on this forum, but can't seem to find an answer. I have a web service within an Apache Tomcat instance installed on a Redhat linux server. I only have shell access to the server, and need to monitor outbound network traffic from my web service. Is there a unix command that will allow me to monitor all outbound traffic? I'm thinking fiddler, but a unix version? I've heard of things like ntop and iptraf, but I don't think those will help me in this instance.

I am looking for a tool that will tell me, in less than half a second, if the microphone is picking up any sound above a certain threshold. (I plan to then mute the Master channel with another command line tool, like amixer.)

Is there a way to configure my interface to promisc mode and also make it not capture the "transmitted" packets. ?I mean, i want the interface in Promisc mode but only for inbound traffic.If there isnt any using ifconfig, can it be by configuring eth0 to promisc using ifconfig , and filtering outbound traffic from being captured using sockets or something ?

I have a UBUNTU server 10.04 LTS with 3 network interfaces (eth0,1,2) with eth0 is connected to my lan and others connected to two different ISPs , I am looking for a very flexible and complete monitoring tool which can monitor all of the traffic of incoming and outgoing of any interface and SPECIALLY can show me which local client made connection to which interface for connecting to internet in online mode not offline and it is good to have online web base interface I mean the interface shows the measured data in real time mode. I fount some tools like iftop and iptraf and many others in this url: http://www.ubuntugeek.com/bandwidth-...for-linux.html but non of them are suitable for my net I mean none of them have good web real time data and non of them shows "which local client made connection to which interface for connecting to internet".

I'm having an issue where a server in CA (1000/full) and in VA (100/full) have very lopsided data transfer.
CA -> VA with iperf shows ~20Mbps
VA -> CA with iperf shows ~93Mbps
If we change the CA server to 100/FULL, transfer speed is 93Mbps both ways.
Some tuning was done to TCP window scaling parameters, but it won't correct the issue, just improve the CA -> VA numbers to what is listed above. I will say, turning TCP window scaling OFF will lower the transfer speed both ways to < 20Mbps.
The only clue I have when looking at wireshark dumps is that the window scale going OUT would never go past 10240 (scale is 8, so 2^8 x 40bytes). In the opposite direction, the window size will go above 3MB (scaled).
It is not a bandwidth problem as iperf with UDP shows 93Mbps both ways. Local transfers (CA 1000/full to CA 100/full) show full speed both ways, so I feel it is strictly related to TCP window scaling.
RedHat 5 64-bit on both sides. Any ideas why it won't scale above 10240?

I need to log outbound (server -> remote) ssh traffic, but am unsure of the best way to do this.
I added this to iptables, but nothing is being written to the logs when I ssh from the server to another system.
iptables -A OUTPUT -m state --state NEW -j LOG --log-uid iptables-save

I have recently purchased dedicated box for game servers, I just wanted to install bandwidth monitoring software, however I have read comments regarding it as it uses lot of CPU resources. There is another method to monitor bandwidth using iptables. But that article is too complex for me: [URL]. I just want to check my overall bandwidth not from any particular ports. Any teaching commands to do that, as my new to Fedora. I use ssh to control my server.

I am trying to ssh into my server from the command-line without including the username in the url. I do not want it to send any username, as it currently takes the active account and sends that as user.ex:
ssh server.com -> (doesn't send default username)
instead of [URL] I would want to input username directly into the server, just like it is done using putty on windows. he wants to be prompted for a username, rather than having to provide one when connecting - but I don't really see the utility in such a thing. - birryree Sep 8 at 17:41

I understand the difference between Reject vs Drop for incoming traffic, but are there any differences between reject and drop for Outbound Traffic? Are there reasons to pick one over the other or are they functionally identical when talking about Outbound traffic?

PLease note I'm looking for something of little lightweight here (Not something like zenoss) But I'd still like to get performance graphs and event notifying alerts. Also note this is to monitor less than 50 servers and perhaps a firewall or 2.

I am trying to set up a Linux box that can act as a router (and firewall later). I have a Debian 5 installation and it has two nics in it. I am trying to use the linux route command to set up a route between the two interfaces. I am finding it difficult to do. Let me explain how I am trying to set up my network: I have the ethernet cable from my modem connecting to eth0 of my Debian box, then I have eth1 connecting to a switch, which I connect all my computers and other devices to. I want to have two different ip address schemes for the devices. So here is my interfaces file:

So I am wondering, to get my ethernet traffic from eth0 to eth1 and vice versa, do I need to make it so the Gateway for Destination 192.168.1.0 is 10.1.1.1, and for Destination 10.0.0.0, Gateway 192.168.1.0? I have looked at the linux manpage for route and I am still confused. I have also looked at the Debian networking page, but it is still unclear to me how to do this. how I am to use the route command to get this working? Or am I not even supposed to use the route command?

This is a bit of a long shot and I think the answer will be no but I thought I'd ask just in case. I have a number of tutorials in html but I want to be able to search for particular information in these files and display that information in the terminal rather than having to go through a browser. Apart from using grep which gives a pretty messy display or having to write a a specially Bash or python script, is there any command line tools that can provide such a function?

I have a WAN network that i need to do some analysis on, for the traffic flows. I did lots of googling to figure out what useful tool to collect the packet informations.I found this site [URL]..witch i made great use of to recognize the tcpdum tool. I also have a network simulator on windows platform wich is Opnet Guru, (by the way.. is there a linux version for this simulator?).

NOTE: in the Opnet Guru invironment there is an object called the profile that is beeing used to customize and genarate data flows with the desired characteristics to simulate the real flows. I'm trying to create a liveCD/USB for use of myself and my family. The idea is to set up the LiveCD to look like their used to seeing it. I know I can just copy the homedirectory but I wanted to do it via script so new user accounts could also have the common bells and whistles we use.So really I have two questions.1. Is it possible to add programs to the Gnome Tool Bar from command line? aka via a script2. Is it possible to modify the default panel template so new users get my changes?

I have ndiswrapper installed, and have successfully installed the drivers, I have also used nm-applet (and x forwarding) to configure wireless connections. My problem is that I want to reboot and unplug my wired connection and use just my wireless connection, but when I reboot it doesn't seem to connect to my network.
is there a command line tool or an independent tool that i can launch forwarding x I can use to search for and connect to wifi networks that would also have the ability to save configuration so that when I reboot the system automatically connects to my wifi?
