I have written a program which uses port 5000. I need to restrict other programs use this port when I'm not running that program. In Linux are there a mechanism to restrict port 5000 accesses from other programs.

What I mean is that I would open the picture, set the proportion of sides, pick my part of the picture and then could resize it. graphic program that does that? I'm running a quite complex model, and it's taking me around a week to complete the run, and one of my colleagues says that he can run it in one-two days. After looking to several forums to know how does it work, I've seen how the memory is used (using the command ps -A --sort -rss -o comm,pme), and the model run just takes 0,3% of the memory. I bought a 4 cores and 8gb of RAM laptop to be able to run the model fast, but I don't know how to allocate the use of the memory to concentrate it in developing that task. Is that possible?

The machine in question is basically a home workstation. I do some light development (source code lives in home), run some very low-load server processes (apache, etc.), and do a bit of image and video editing from time to time. I run Gentoo on x86 if that makes a difference.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am new to Linux so thought it would be a good learning exercise to try and setup an FTP server using linux.I have downloaded and installed Ubuntu 10 server edition and installed vsftpd, following instructions found on here I have configured the software and I can connect from an FTP client on my windows PC across the internal LAN.I have a couple of questions if I may:
1) a post on this forum suggests that local users can access the FTP server if the correct line is enabled in vsftpd.conf - I have done this and the fact that I can access it shows this is working I would think, however users added subsequently with the useradd command cannot access the server. Filezilla shows a could not connect to server error.
2) how do I give the server a fixed IPv4 address? It is currently using DHCP
3) I need to be able to put files into users folders for them to access offsite, but I don't want them to see each others filesfolders, can I do this?
I'm using ubuntu 9.04; I have a large project in windows that I want to "port" it in linux.
It uses IPC mechanism "Shared memory" and also "Critical Section" APIs in windows, but unfortunately I have no good reference to change these windows APIs to their equivalent in linux?
Is there a comprehensive documentation or reference for this issues? I mean a table containing the equivalent APIs or systemcalls in windows and linux! For example, what's an alternative for the "InitializeCriticalSection" API in linux? Or an alternative for "CRITICAL_SECTION" structure? View 14 Replies View RelatedI bought a set of 3 laser sensors and it came with a software and its C++ source code for windows to receive the lasers info through the serial port. Since the entire project is running on Linux, I need to port the windows code to Linux. At the present moment, I already can receive the data from each of the 3 sensors, but the info is coming concatenated! Tracking down the original windows code, I found that it is probably happening cause I didn't ported these lines to my Linux version:

I have connected a device to my linux system with a serial cable (rs232). The settings are: port /dev/ttyS0, baud rate=38400, data bits=8, stop bits=1, no parity, no hardware or software handshaking. I wrote a linux program that sends 1 byte to the device, but the device doesn't receive it. I know the serial ports are working because when I use the CuteCOM application to send data, the device DOES receive it, so obviously it is a problem with my code..

I have an application originally built for Unix Solaris that opens a Ghostview window to display maps on the desktop. When we recompiled the application for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, the Ghostview window opens and displays as requested, however I find the window cannot be successfully moved from the top left corner of the desktop. This has never been a problem on Unix, which allows the window to be moved to any location. In Linux, when I attempt to move the window to any other location on the desktop, it immediately pops back to the top left corner. I sometimes need to compare two different Ghostview maps, which is tough to do when they both insist on staying in the same location.

I have a third party program (tightvnc) which I want to monitor and detect if it loses a connection with a client. I don't care if the client has the program open but isn't doing anything with it, I only want to know if the actual TCP connection is lost.
Since TCP takes forever to die on it's own I was thinking the best way to detect if a connection is lost is by bandwidth the bandwidth on the tcp port allocated to the VNC connection. Are there any tools built in to redhat (RHEL 5.2) which I could use to do this? Since I don't have full control of the operating system I would prefer to use built in tools rather then trying to get a new tool installed.
