General :: Gamers Against The PlayStation - V3.21 "Other OS" Firmware Update?
Apr 12, 2010
Im trying to form a gaming comumunity on facebook around the issue of PlayStations new 3.21 firmware, if we can get enough members and we are able show a large enough fan base for the retaining of the OtherOS while also being able to access the PSN were hoping Sony will reinstate the feature. Its a long shot but if you at LinuxQuestions could join the group and also pass the link around hopefully we can at least do something.

I can't my system because of this error: Code: linux-firmware: /lib/firmware/radeon/R700_rlc.bin exists in filesystem Note that in the beginning, it asks:
Code: :: Replace kernel26-firmware with core/linux-firmware? [Y/n] There are so many updates by now that the list fills in a few pages in the terminal! Also, I wonder why so many Arch updates get stuck or broken compared to almost any other distro? Is it poorly designed packages? Is it a design flaw in pacman/the package format?

Sony plans to release a new Playstation 3 firmware update worldwide this week in hopes of combating potential software piracy. System update v3.21 will disable the console's "Install Other OS" feature, which allowed users to install the Linux operating system. The feature is currently only available in PlayStation 3 models released prior to the "slim" redesign that launched in September 2009. The update will go live on April 1. SCEA's corporate communications director Patrick Seybold notes on the PlayStation Blog the feature is being removed due to "security concerns."
"In addition, disabling the "Other OS" feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system," Seybold wrote. Those who use Linux can choose not to upgrade, however, Sony lists several features that will no longer be available: Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later.Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings) Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later."For those PS3 users who are currently using the "Other OS" feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the "Other OS," as they will not be able to access that data following the update," Seybold added.

I need to access each drive of a RAID array in order to update the firmware - I am completely new to linux. I think there are probably some potential challanges along the way to get this "working" For example, it seems to me that the array may present itself to application code as a single device. I need to drill down into the RAID and talk to each physical device in turn via some sort of pass-through mechanism. I'm currently pretty lost - can anyone point me in the "right" direction

I am experiencing a problem reading long filenames on dual-layer 8.5 Gb DVDs. SEE: [URL] I am considering a possible solution might be a firmware update. The drive is a Toshiba-Samsung : SE-S084B/RSBN [TSST=Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology Corp] Samsung provides ONLY windows updates or a web-based *windows-only* method of installing same. Sony currently only supplies its NEX cameras with .exe binary firmware updates. Prior to purchasing the camera, I installed Wine and was able to execute the .exe. Of course, that doesn't guarantee that it'll work. Now, with the camera in hand, I actually tried to update the firmware. It didn't work. I tried using Wine 1.1.28 and 1.3.3 and even the cloned the Wine repository with git and compiling Wine with USB patches I found here: [URL] (Wine git, compile and install found here: USB - The Official Wine Wiki)
With the camera connected, I was able to use "wineconsole cmd" to open a dos shell. In the shell, I was able to see that the D: drive (which I assigned to /media/disk) was correctly accessing the camera as a mass storage device. I can only conclude that USB support works. However, it doesn't appear to work for updating the firmware. The firmware program from Sony searches for about a minute and doesn't find the camera. When I run the firmware updater with Wine, Wine produces these files:
[Code]....
The .dat file looks most likely to be the data I want to dump to the camera, but how? (I've done some research and have read that the data is probably encrypted.)

I've installed Debian Squeeze on my server several days ago. During install process installer asked me to provide USB flash drive with firmware aic94xx-seq.fw. All went fine. Today I installed all updates to my system with "U" in aptitude. Aptitude installed kernel update 2.6.32-5 and created initrd accordingly. But now I can't boot up my system because it can't find LVM volumes on harddrive connected to Adaptec RAID card. How can I boot my system now? I have USB with firmware.
I have netboot CD. Unfortunately when I tried to edit boot records in grub I found that there is no my old kernel anymore. The only kernel grub sees is the new vmlinuz kernel and new initrd How take make my server alive?

I have a Trendnet TEW652BRP wireless router, HW/ V2.1R, FW/ V2.00b34. I have read that these routers had a problem, with the stock firmware, where port forwarding was concerned. And indeed, I do have some problems with it. Ie; canyouseeme.org can't see me when I open ports, and I am not on a proxy server. I have tried this with the appropriate exception rules (in/out) in ufw, and on the router settings with UPnP enabled and disabled. In the latter case, I also tried router firewall rules, port forwarding and access rules. Still could not see me (timed out in all cases).
Now, this being an area I have little experience with, I am not sure if this version of firmware was supposed to have fixed the PF problems. To the questions...
1. Has anyone here who had an analogous experience found a solution, with the stock firmware?
2. I have read about the DD-WRT option to flash the router firmware (which says fixes the issue), but I am wary. I believe this is a Linux based replacement firmware, which is not a bad thing in my book, but does anyone have any recommendations or heads up on issues with it, from experience, apart from what is commented in the documentation at [URL]

I recently gained Ultimate 2.6 Gamers and it is very good! New to this version, I looked for Compiz, but first found Emerald in the list. I fiddled with it, selecting options, but then the fine screen resolution went askew, so the light at the top right is out of view, and the eye candy arrow head cursor was replaced by a black and white arrow. How can I fix this, go back to default?
Using a desktop, Pentium 4 dual core, ASUS. Dell monitor. Nvidia built in graphics card, downloaded a Nvidia co. driver.

I have a laptop with 2 x different versions of Ubuntu installed as follows:
Ubuntu 10.10 on a partition; and
Ubuntu ultimate edition gamers (based on ubuntu 10.10 I believe).
I've only recently installed the gamers edition as a dual boot to see what it looks like. Now I've had a play around with it I've realised that I don;t really like it.What's the quickest/easiest way of reverting back to my original ubuntu 10.10 as a single boot? I don't want to re-install 10.10 - I was hoping I could delete the gamers edition to get back to my original single boot 10.10.

after installing Ubuntu Natty Narwhal 11.04, I'm experiencing tons and tons of complications with the wireless Internet connection. I have solved most of them. Now I have only one thing left. When I hit the drop-down menu for wireless connections, it says "Wireless connection (Firmware missing)"
I have installed the driver for my wireless card but what is the firmware? I honestly don't know what it is although it's very basic. I have a Broadcom 43xx as my wireless card (specifically 4306). How do I get the firmware for it? Do I find it in Windows? Also I cannot get b43-fwcutter because I have absolutely to Internet connection on Ubuntu. To post this, I'm using Windows.

I downloaded the appropriate iso for the ps3 from here:[url]
(specifically: ubuntu-10.04-desktop-powerpc+ps3.iso via torrent)
Installation runs smoothly up until 100% and then i am prompted to reboot.
When i click reboot, i get info on some daemons(?) shutting down(i think) and then the cd is automatically ejected and i am prompted to press enter.
So far, so good. After i hit enter though, i get a large amount of various read errors and finally a segmentation fault. The system just hangs there :/.
I forcibly reboot the PS3, and then i am greeted with the pack of errors that are shown in the screenshot.

I just tried installing OpenSUSE 11.1 onto my Playstation 3. I installed the otheros.bld fine (which I downloaded via a link provided on the OpenSUSE website). I then inserted my 32-bit Gnome CD for installation and restarted my system. Then on startup, a blue/grey screen appears. Here are the links to the screenshot (sorry for poor quality):
[Full Screen]

[Top Half]

[Bottom Half]

As you can see, the only option is for me to select the gameboot, which obviously takes me back to the Playstation XMB. There are keys at the bottom of the screen, but this is only to change the resolution. So I have no option to install the OS.
Does anybody know why this screen appears and have any ideas on how I can get around this problem to install SUSE onto my Playstation?

I have a Live minimal install Gentoo CD that was made from a downloaded ISO that does not contain the drivers/firmware for my wireless networking card in my laptop. So I unpacked the ISO image and un-squashed the squashfs and added two folders that contained the firmware in the /lib/firmware directory. Then I squashed the file system back the way it was (squashfs), and re-created the ISO again. Then I burned the ISO to an image on a blank CD but when I tried to boot from the new CD, the CD was ignored and the laptop went directly to the hard drive for booting. So the live CD is no longer a bootable CD. I can't even tell if the firmware will work because the CD is not detected at POST. The BIOS is set to boot from a CD before it pages the hard drive. The original CD booted fine before I made the modifications to it. I compared the contents of the original CD to the one I modified and everything is identical. What did I do wrong.
