I have mandriva 2008 installed on my system. From past 2 years it was working fine. But now suddenly i weird problem has started. Whenever i boot the mandriva 2008 OS, it boots up with no problem and comes to login screen, it takes the username and password but it restarts the X-server again. But if i give wrong username or password, it shows login failed.
I am trying to change the login screen from "Configure Your Desktop>Advanced>Login Manager".When I go into the login manager, everything is grayed out,you cannot change anything.I have to change it as root but I don't know how to do that. Therefore I need help regarding that. I did google searching but it was not of any help because they were for previous releases of mandriva or other distros which didn't apply to my case.
It seems to be locked up. i cant change any settings, im familiar with kde 4.3 as ive been a kde user in ubuntu for a year or two. every single button is greyed out. i mostly have default options setup in mandriva, i just started using it.
This is the equivilent of a DJ going into the"dusty records bin"to play an old song.I've got a hard drive that's left over from a Mandriva Spring 2008 computer and I need to copy the photos off it to a DVD and move them to a computer running Ubuntu.I can't seem to get the Ubuntu computer to access what's on the Mandriva drive, so I've loaded Mandriva Spring 2008 on another computer.
I've accessed the photos I need easily enough, but can't copy them to a storage medium so I can move them to the other computer. I've tried two USB devices, an external DVD drive and a flash drive and can't just copy (or drag 'n drop) the files to the other devices. This evening I may try a portable hard drive, again with a USB connection, and see if that works.
If there's a fool-proof way to do this by using a terminal, I'll try that. I haven't been able to devote enough time to Linux to familiarize myself with terminal commands. Or, if there's a program that will run under Mandriva Spring 2008 that will let me accomplish the transfer, I'll try that as well.
how to set up the Xscreensaver to start automatically, when the KDE starts? I use Mandriva 2008 and every time I log in, the Xscreensaver is off and I have to start it up from the 'run' menu.

CMake Error: Freetype_DIR is not set. It must be set to the directory containing FreetypeConfig.cmake in order to use Freetype.
there is no file on my machine named that or any lowercase/uppercase combinations thereof.
here is the full spit out:
[jayjay@localhost lmms-0.4.5]$ cd build [jayjay@localhost build]$ make PROCESSOR: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz Machine: i586-mandriva-linux-gnu -- Target host is 32 bit -- Found Qt-Version 4.3.3 code....
i looked at version 2010 RPM file lists, still no FreeTypeConfig.cmake.
I even built cmake 2.8 from cmake's SF page, it has FindFreetype.cmake, but not FreeTypeConfig.cmake.
I have a touchscreen (DELL model)which is working with windows xp (with windows drivers for touchscreen installed). but i want to use mandriva 2008 on the touchscreen, which requires drivers of mandriva 2008 only. I have been trying very hard but in vain.
I have problem with login into Windows 2008 server usning rdesktop 1.6. While I'm connect Windows 2008 host, prompts username and password i get an error: "Wrong username or password" but i'm sure that username and pass are correct (I can connect this server using windows Remote Desktop). My OS is Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit.
I've downloaded the jbuilder thing for ubuntu here Now I've tried running ./install_linux.sh and that starts the initialization proces but it gets stuck on a blank screen.Tried the same with sudo ./install_linux.sh and as root, still nothing.[URL]and another post I've seem to lost somewhere.Question is, where to go from here? So far I've always found my answers in google, but this time there simply isnt. So my guess is 'maybe u guys know'
My last setup (years ago) ran fluxbox so because it was familiar I installed it as a secondary to xfce right off the bat. I download a lot of different stuff because I like to try out all the apps I can find but somewhere I broke something. I can still run fluxbox fine, but nither the Xubuntu nor Xfce sessions will run now. Last thing I remember changing was pulse audio(removed it for an experiment I was trying with jack audio), not sure if it is connected but when I try to login to xfce the screen goes black, flickers a few times then it brings me back to the login screen.
I tried failsafe but everytime I do my monitor gives me a "frequency out of range" error. I tried purging and reinstalling xubuntu desktop and xfce settings but I am thinking its my xorg config. My laptop is a Toshiba satellite M305D-s4830 with ATI Radeon 3100 mobile graphics card and I am running Xubuntu 10.10. Unfortunately I also broke the screen, so right now I am stuck with an external monitor till I get a new one.
i'm currently using fedora15 Gnome3...i was just wondering that i have seen many different login box and login screens of users. how do i change my login box and login screen
The problem come after i kill the Xorg using the kill command, and the screen turns to black without anything so that i can do nothing. The problem goes on after reboot
I have installed VirtualBox and setup a Windows Vista host, initially with a .vdi of 10gb. That filled up quickly, so I added another 20gb secondary partition, after first trying to allocate a .vdi to a SCSI controller. Configured the drive in Windows (Computer Management), and all seemed ok. I shutdown VB, and rebooted my Linux host (openSuse 11.3). Now I keep bouncing back to the login screen, and can't login to Linux KDE, but can login to a console.I do have the following info:
I did see a message before, that I don't see anymore, that said it could not start NFS services due to missing entry in fstab. Another I'm seeing now is it couldn't start the avahi-daemon, no space left on device. This is odd, since I have a 200GB drive, with half of it left, only max 30GB set to VB. Here's my df -k output:
/dev/sda6 Use% is 100% devtmpfs Use% is 1% tmpfs Use% is 1% /dev/sda7 Use% is 46%
So root "/" is mounted on /dev/sda6, which looks like it could be a problem, but why would this suddenly be a problem after working with VirtualBox? Could this be a matter of just freeing up space on /dev/sda6? Like the /tmp folder that's under "/"?
I have a desktop running Hardy and till friday it was running good. Today is monday and I guess it has got monday blues like I get every monday at work.Today I tried to start it as usual but it just refused to go further than login screen. I just can not login. It just hangs it there. I do not know what has gone wrong. I did not change anything since friday and no one else uses it. Theres nothing in logs that could give any idea. It just hangs without any reason and is still on the login screen for ever. It does ask my username and password but then it does not go further. But to my surprise I tried logging in with root and it gave me expected error that system administrator is not allowed to login from gnome.
Just loaded Lenny, mostly with defaults. I'd like to go back to a command-line login for the console attached to the machine. Of course, I'd like to be able to 'startx' whenever I do want the GUI up.
I am trying to create a script that I can save on the desktop of my Primary computer and have it log in (get past the log in screen on the remote computers, and the banner) to multiple computers with the same user name and password in a LAN that is not connected to the internet.I am also trying to create a script that starts a script on the desktop of these remote machines ON the remote machines, but I think I am on the verge of figuring that one out with the "expect" command in a script.
Suffering with a log in problems for user accounts but I have compounded it by accidentally disabling local log in!
Using CentOS 5 and from within the local root user I opened the log in screen preferences and then opened the Security tab. I then opened the "configer Xserver" and I have unchecked the "logins are handled by this computer". Now Since I have logged out of root all I have is the X cursor on a black screen and no log in. Obviously logins are not handled by this computer as I unchecked it! Is there anyway to get this back on as I cannot access this from another PC.
im using rhel 5 and my x screen is flashing nothing is displaying in itand im getting only single user modei checked /var/log/messages got the error'gdm_slave_xioerror_handler:Fatal X error-Restarting :0 '. i tried startx manually but it didnt worked.
My problem is basically that when I boot for the first time after a fresh installation and setup, I am always stuck at the login screen or thrown back to it. No matter what account I log onto, whether it's 'root' or any other user account I have setup, it would attempt logging in, black out the screen, turn my monitor off then on again and I'm back at the login screen. This is all using the graphical interface of course. I'm having this same problem with all the linux distributions that I've tried so far:
Gnome Sabayon Mandriva 2010-I've even tried changing all the different boot environments, and same problem Open Solaris and Ubuntu won't even install. It just sits at the loading screen. Why would this happen? I've tried all these OS's on my regular PC, which is a dual core, 4 gb of ram, and they've worked perfectly. So why wouldn't it run properly on that other PC?
10.10 32 bit on a pc with a GForce 9600 GT VGA and P5KPL-SE mainboard.Sometimes, while booting, after the letters on the screen message " booting from hd1..." get thinner, everything stops and I dont get the purple login screen. After switcihng pc off and rebooting, usually, everything is OK. I used proprietary nvidia driver version current and after switching to version 173 (considering that it might had to do with the driver), maybe it somewhat improved things but the problem persists. IT is not that terrible to reboot except for that I use this pc at work and switching it off sometimes starts the disk check for errors utility which lasts long since disk is 1 TBI tried to read dmesg but am not familiar with the terms I show and gave up
i'm running ubuntu maverick on a dell laptop and it was working flawlessly until the audio started stuttering so I looked up a possible cure for it. I came accross a post that said uninstalling pulseaudio would cure the problem - so i did through software centre. When I was uninstalling it there was configuration files to uninstall as well. When I shut down the laptop and tried to restart it, it goes to login screen with my name but when I click on login it goes back to the same screen. This is the first time this has happened and im not sure what I can do.
Currently i am running fedora 13 with KDE and I get bore seeing blue login screen. I tried to change it under System Settings->Advance->Login Window , but it doesnt work.
I logged in as root. i want to activate screensaver which required password. Installation version is RHEL 5 server. I have installed xlockmore-5.28-1.el5.rf.i386.rpm but when i run xlock comand in terminal window, it shows error e.g. libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x5b xlock: symbol lookup error: xlock: undefined symbol: DPMSQueryExtension
I am new to this forum. Today morning I installed "skim" program which i used for chinese input. when my sytem was restarted for the second time, it went inside but the GUI login screen reappears even after giving the correct password!
So I've got this home file server, and I want to display certain stuff using:
top who a tcpdump of snort logs, scrolling in real time
I want it to display on the screen using a split terminal screen, so all of the information shows on one display, but I do not want it to be vulnerable to a local attacker. Is there any way I can have these things start up at login, but prevent that user from doing anything other than viewing this information?
