I logged in as root. i want to activate screensaver which required password.
Installation version is RHEL 5 server. I have installed xlockmore-5.28-1.el5.rf.i386.rpm but when i run xlock comand in terminal window, it shows error e.g. libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x5b xlock: symbol lookup error: xlock: undefined symbol: DPMSQueryExtension
I am facing one problem, whenever I login to my Linux machine with caps lock key on i.e. ROOT inspite of root (password in lower case letter), I am able to login and after that all letters comes in upper case letter only.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've googled for the answer to this but every thread has the same answer "don't log in as root". For once I'd like an actual answer to the question if possible. All of the jobs that I run are all through the root account and I'm constantly using ssh into other workstations and servers to change config files or whatnot. I'd like to be able to lock the screen when I take short breaks or head out for the day while being able to leave jobs running. For example I am currently backing up a server onto another one and would prefer not having to stop the jobs when I leave for the day(there's over 400GB to move).
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed Fedora 12 earlier today using preupgrade. Everything seems to work alright, but I do have a couple of problems. I've had this happen twice already, but when I'm booting up, my machine will freeze once the Fedora logo is shown right before I get into the login screen. Another problem I've had is when I do boot into KDE I'll see an ! icon next to the clock telling me that there has been a crash in the kernel.
Edit: Update- It only hangs when I reboot. If I restart in windows and try to boot fedora, it hangs, if I restart in Fedora, it will hang after the restart. The only way I can boot Fedora is from a cold boot
Edit: I seemed to have fixed the problem after searching Google for 20 minutes. I just ran this command as root.. #chcon -t system_dbusd_exec_t /bin/dbus-daemon
Is there a way to set Linux to automatically log in to a specific user account and at the same time lock the screen? I want to save time and trigger various software that always should start up on boot, while leaving the computer unattended during startup (extra important and practical for remote control boots), by enforcing a 'screen lock' so that no-one can see what happens behind the login screen without entering the login credentials.

In our cluster of RedHat4 & 5 machines, if someone locks the computer and walks away no body can use it. Is there a feature in RedHat5, Gnome, KDE etc that would allow for the option of switching users at the lock screen, so more than one person can be logged in

But if you use the log out/switch user function, it's "something else". Using the "switch user" function, could there be a problem like with the gnome-screensaver? Could someone "kill a process" and presto...the lock is removed?Could the GDM [??] "login windows process" [e.g.: a picture of it] get killed and the "lock" gets owned?
p.s.: if the [2] method is safer, then how can i put an icon on the GNOME panel, to launch the "switch user" action by 1 click?
I'm trying to get my screen to turn off whenever I lock my screen. I know that in Power Management, there's an option to turn off the screen after a set amount of time, and I know about xset dpms force off, but the former doesn't allow me to turn off the screen from the logout menu, and the latter only turns the screen off for a short amount of time (1 minute or so. The screen just turns back on by itself).
Is there a script I can modify to change what happens when "Lock screen" from the logout menu is selected, or is there a script I can add to the panel to lock the screen and then turn the monitor off (and turning it back on when I shake the mouse or something)?
My last setup (years ago) ran fluxbox so because it was familiar I installed it as a secondary to xfce right off the bat. I download a lot of different stuff because I like to try out all the apps I can find but somewhere I broke something. I can still run fluxbox fine, but nither the Xubuntu nor Xfce sessions will run now. Last thing I remember changing was pulse audio(removed it for an experiment I was trying with jack audio), not sure if it is connected but when I try to login to xfce the screen goes black, flickers a few times then it brings me back to the login screen.
I tried failsafe but everytime I do my monitor gives me a "frequency out of range" error. I tried purging and reinstalling xubuntu desktop and xfce settings but I am thinking its my xorg config. My laptop is a Toshiba satellite M305D-s4830 with ATI Radeon 3100 mobile graphics card and I am running Xubuntu 10.10. Unfortunately I also broke the screen, so right now I am stuck with an external monitor till I get a new one.
When I hit Alt+Ctrl+L my system is starting the ScreenSaver but not locking the screen. The keybinding is correctly set. This is happening in only root account but in another user account it works perfect !

View 14 Replies View RelatedWhat happens is that I resorted to deleting my .kde directory after my kid destroyed my profile where title bar, menu, konsole get broken. After deleting, I login again thus regenerating the .kde directory. To avoid my kid from messing my desktop, I tried to lock it. It does not lock.
It just need a KDE full restart perhaps since when I login the other day, it now works.
I'm updated to Slackware current for almost a month already and have not played a lot on KDE desktop (busy programming stuff).
However, on day I tried to lock the desktop in KDE to avoid the kid from destroying my cool desktop setting, but it didn't lock. Cool, so I tried screen saver and add an option to lock the screen.
When I test screen saver, it displays. But when I wait for 1 minute(I set it that way), it doesn't fire up. Not even after 15 minutes which I think the default.
It usually work before (several months ago) using the lower version of KDE. It is just last Saturday that I noticed it.
I tried to dig the profile management but I could not find anything relevant there.
The problem come after i kill the Xorg using the kill command,and the screen turns to black without anything so that i can do nothing. The problem goes on after reboot
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have installed VirtualBox and setup a Windows Vista host, initially with a .vdi of 10gb. That filled up quickly, so I added another 20gb secondary partition, after first trying to allocate a .vdi to a SCSI controller. Configured the drive in Windows (Computer Management), and all seemed ok. I shutdown VB, and rebooted my Linux host (openSuse 11.3). Now I keep bouncing back to the login screen, and can't login to Linux KDE, but can login to a console.I do have the following info:

I did see a message before, that I don't see anymore, that said it could not start NFS services due to missing entry in fstab. Another I'm seeing now is it couldn't start the avahi-daemon, no space left on device. This is odd, since I have a 200GB drive, with half of it left, only max 30GB set to VB. Here's my df -k output:
/dev/sda6 Use% is 100%
devtmpfs Use% is 1%
tmpfs Use% is 1%
/dev/sda7 Use% is 46%
So root "/" is mounted on /dev/sda6, which looks like it could be a problem, but why would this suddenly be a problem after working with VirtualBox? Could this be a matter of just freeing up space on /dev/sda6? Like the /tmp folder that's under "/"?

I have already disabled root login over the ssh by modifying /etc/ssh/sshd_config. But how would I disable root login on a server itself. We have implemented LDAP in our environment and our security guide states that root login must be obtained by first logging into the host using his/her own regular userid then gaining root privileges by using the SU.
