I am running FC12 64bit. Frequently the system hangs usually one app - Thunderbird. If I have Firefox up also, it seems to run fine. The light indicating disk access is on almost constantly. Is there a way to find out what process is accessing which disk? I have 4 hds installed - 2 IDE and 2 SATA. I am having a similar problem trying to do a reboot - it does not reboot within 15 minutes. I need to hit the reset button.

I had installed Fedora 12. Initially it used to work fine. But then, every morning I start it, the system hangs after booting, I could only get a stable session after 2-3 reboots. This regularly happened and one fine morning, my system finally crashed. What could be the reason? Should I re-install F-12

I recently installed centos 5.5 on a new system, details below. All worked fine for a couple of weeks, then the system froze up. No network access, no keyboard/mouse, blank screen. Had to reboot. Happened again about a week later. Then started happening every couple of days, then daily, and today it happened three times.
I see nothing unusual in any of the logs. The freezing does not seem to be correlated with any particular activity. Happened in both gnome and kde. While it's up, everything seems to work fine. I looked on the intel site for a new driver for this chipset but didn't find a linux version. I tried different versions of this same kernel (PAE, centosplus etc) but have not tried an older kernel.
I installed memtest86 (with yum) but when I try to start it from grub, the screen goes blank for a few seconds, then it reboots. Can't get it to start. Tried a bootable memtest86 cd that worked before (couple of years ago) and it wouldn't boot from it (bios is set to boot first from cd). Maybe this is a strong hint?
My next steps are to burn a new cd of memtest86 and try that. And/or to start removing ram to see if any of them are the culprit. In the meantime I'm asking if any of you have had similar problems with this architecture, or have other suggestions of things I could try. I don't have pieces of hardware lying around that I can easily swap in and out, unfortunately. If all this fails I'll try FC13. Any advice on whether or not you think that might fix the problem would be appreciated, before I go to the trouble.code...

When I try to launch application which runs in another window (not inside shell), it always fails with this kind of message: (example from gnome-terminal)
Code:
** (gnome-terminal:2477): WARNING **: Failed to connect to the session manager: None of the authentication protocols specified are supported Failed to get the session bus: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
Falling back to non-factory mode. Failed to summon the GConf demon; exiting. Failed to contact configuration server; the most common cause is a missing or misconfigured D-Bus session bus daemon. See [URL] for information. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.) I am running it as root, have GNOME installed and running, and also fresh install of gconf.

How can I define a hotkey which will raise (and ideally also lower) a specific window or application?. Assuming epiphany is minimized, pressing F5 will raise the epiphany window. Pressing F5 again will minimize it. Something like guake/tilda.

ll the time for me and when they do, I can't do anything. The typical case for me:Trying to run something, application hangs. The screen is either black or an image of the previous used app (aka not responding). This is when i try all sorts of key-combinations to get out of it to either get to a console or some other way to shut the crashed application down, but since the application is crashed and all the keys are overrided (either that or not responding), I cant do anything.Things I've tried pressing:
ctrl+alt+delete (you never know if something useful will happend (: )
ctrl+alt+f1 (I actually thought this would work, but no)
alt+tab (this was my second hope!)

I have developed a proprietary multithreaded application using Qt library version 4.2.1 on RHEL 4 platform. The application communicates with different external interfaces using serial communication using well defined protocols. For each system I have a thread that handles data acquisition and processing, it sets an update flag which is read by the GUI thread to update GUI after specified number of seconds. The incoming data from external systems is processed and updated on GUI at certain intervals. Each system update rate on GUI is different. Generally it is 1 second. Their rate of sending data is different and is generally 1Hz, 5 Hz and 10 Hz. For systems with string data I have no issues. But some systems send raw data and I have to process every byte of the entire packet, for which I have to use for loops. Now my problem is if I keep the update rate of GUI for such systems less than a fixed number of seconds (which I have to calculate by hit and trial) the application hangs after sometime. I have tested this system exlusively by switching of all other systems and it hangs standalone.
This leads me to conclude that timing of GUI update is what is causing the application to hang. Also I read somewhere on the net that in multithreading application timers play an important role and slight variation in timing can lead to hung applications. As of now I have kept 5 seconds as the GUI update time and app runs fine. Can somebody suggest something else which might be the cause?Note that I have used mutexes, wait conditions and all necessary tools which are used in multithreading app. But it is only the timer on which I could pin down the issue.

I am facing the following issue. My application runs perfectly in red hat linux(32bit, 64bit physical m/c and 32 bit vmWare m/c) and in one version of centOS(32bit physical m/c - don't remember the version:Sorry). However when I am running the same application in CentOS 5.4 (64bit version) I face the following issues -
a. the application gets stuck in the conditional wait even though the signal is sent after the application has moved to conditional wait. b. vsftpd service start fails from within the application even though the service starts and stops peroperly from console.

I"m running 10.04 on a netbook. I switched my Java look and feel to Nimbus and now my java application opens with most of the buttons and window content missing. The main menu is there, but otherwise the main form is mostly blank. If I restart the application (not my computer) 2-3 times, the problem is resolved until the next time I have to launch the java app. I did not see this issue before changing the look & feel setting for Java. But the GTK l&F doesn't work for other reasons, so I was forced to make a change.
I'm running compiz and I know the blank windows in Java apps was a common problem a while back. I'm not sure if what I'm seeing is related to that old problem or is something different.

Any of you ever heard of OS/2 WARP? My dad is a longtime user, as was I until I got my Mac (and now my netbook with Ubuntu). In any case, the OS is a tad...obsolete and my dad at some point wishes to try Ubuntu. In his current setup, he has a "Window List" that can be activated using a keyboard shortcut. It's a popup (not in a menu bar or "panel") that can be moved around and resized. From that you can use your keyboard to navigate to the program or window that you want. For instance, if I want to get to Firefox, I press Ctrl+Escape (to activate the Window List) and then I hit "F" as many times as needed to highlight "Firefox". Then I just hit "Enter" and I'm there. Anything similar out there for Ubuntu (it is preferable if the solution has text as well as icons or else can have the icons removed leaving only the text)
In addition, both him and I would be interested in some program for launching/switching to programs using keyboard shortcuts. On the Mac, I use Quicksilver for this, where it actually Launches the program if it's not open, and switches to it if it is. However, Gnome Do unfortunately lacks this functionality and I have no way to do it off the top of my head.

I use Xubunt 10.04, today when login, I found:
1)I lost ability to move application window. eg, The firefox window is stuck and anchored at the upper left corner. I can still resize by dragging the lower right corner. I notice the upper right corner resize tab disappears. If open another application, it is again anchored at upper left corner and cannot be moved.
2)under Settings>Xfce Setting Manager> Window Manager, all the icons are gone. Same inside Window ManagerTweaks. I used "xfce4-panel" in terminal, it doesn't help.

I'm trying to use TCM (Toolkit for Conceptual Modeling) but the font used by the application for menus window headers & such is very hard to read. I can change the font used for fields within the application in the configuration file, but there doesn't seem to be a way to change the fonts for the other fonts.
Is there a way to do this through gnome or Ubuntu?

after upgrading to Natty (and playing around some with Unity) I noticed that the top part of the application windows are often hidden/covered by the gnome panel (see attachments).
This is particularly annoying for the rdesktop session (second jpg) which I had set up so that it gave maximum desktop size to the rdp session while leaving the panel of top. If you look carefully you see that the "panel gap" is not at the bottom of the screen, while the panel itself covers the top of the rdp window.
It seems like, that the 'anchor point' for application windows used to be '+0+24' (so just below the panel) while now it's '+0+0' in the top left corner of the desktop. I suspect that while playing with unity I reset one of the compiz options which takes care of this. But I can't find it.

What are some good Linux commands to make switching between different directories on the command line easier?
I often have to switch between different directories with long names, e.g.
Typically, I use tab completion, so it's something like this:
But it's annoying because all these names are so similar, so tab completion doesn't really save much work.
What tricks do you use to minimize typing in such situations?
I do use pushd and popd sometimes, but here it won't help much because I don't visit the directories in a given order.
For a nice solution, see the accepted answer to my other, related question. Basically, just create an alternative cd command:
function cd2 { select a in $1*; do cd $a; break; done }
It will list all possible completions at once:
And you can pick one by typing its number.

I dislike dependency ridden applications or applications that do something useful designed for a specific window manager. So I am starting a thread specifically for requests for applications in Gnome and KDE that aren't immediately available in XFCE, Fluxbox,Blackbox, IceWM, LXDE etc. For instance, I am personally creating a graphical sudo application for the lesser window managers. What other applications would you like to see? this is NOT a request for applications for Linux is general, ONLY ones already available in Linux.

I'm developing an embedded Linux (it is almost over now). What I'm struggling with is the system goes unstable by cutting power source frequently and it does not boot anymore. It even does not perform fsck. The system just has a XFCE with a fixed Qt App autoloaded to display some charts. My question is that how commercial embedded Linux distros (like Wifi AP's management Linux, ...) avoid this problem?
