In Ubuntu 10.04, how do you disable the sounds that are played when the graphical login screen is shown, and after you login? There used to be a friendly System->Administration dialog to disable these, but every version seems to move everything around or simply drop useful features.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'd like to disable the log-in screen sound. Not after you log on. Since it's my laptop I can't just switch a knob or press the off button. The function keys don't work before log-in.. Well not for sound at least.. I guess you could say it's a bug.. unless it was intended. Anyway, without filling a bug report how can I disable sound @ the login screen?

when I tried to disable login sound by unchecking Play login sound under Administration > Login Screen, the login sound is not disabled, is this the correct place to disable login sound or it's a bug?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop -- clean HD, no other partitions.
(It's odd, though; when I go to System -> About Ubuntu, it tells me I have version 11.04 Natty Narwhal.)
Anyhow, when switching on my laptop, a short drumming sound effect can be heard when the login prompt appears on the GUI.
There are numerous threads on the Internet explaining various methods to disable this. I have done everything as instructed in these threads to no avail, including:
1) System -> Administration -> Login Screen -> Unlock -> [enter password] -> make sure "Play login sound" is unchecked (it was already) -> Close
2) System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications -> uncheck "Gnome Login Sound" -> Close
3) System -> Preferences -> Sound -> Sound Effects -> Alert volume -> check "Mute" -> Sound theme -> No sounds -> Close
It's foolproof, really. Nevertheless, when restarting the computer, the drum sound is heard again at the login prompt.
I realize I can simply find and delete the sound files, but isn't that a bit harsh? Surely there must be a more elegant way to silence the login.
I want to turn off the sound when Ubuntu boots and can't figure out how. I have tried System > Preferences > Sound > making sure mute is checked for alert volume and also the alert volume level is all the way to the left. It still goes off when I boot.
How do I stop it?
Title is simple, how do i mute sounds at login screen? Somewhere on net i found it's in Login Screen preferences. Unfortunately these prefereces are greyed out - i tried start them as root with sudo too. What now?

We have implemented LDAP in our environment and our security guide states that root login must be obtained by first logging into the host using his/her own regular userid then gaining root privileges by using the SU.

I am aware that taking out tty? from /etc/securetty would result in root not able to log in via CLI modes.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am using Arch Linux and want to disable console messages which are displayed when the kernel boots. I have tried the quiet and loglevel=2 options in /boot/grub/menu.1st as given below:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/c6dbfcdc-fcd8-498e-9182-f3bddc4f05ff ro loglevel=2
However I am still seeing console messages at boot. I used grub-install after the changes.

View 6 Replies View RelatedMy laptop running Ubuntu 10.04 insists on automatically logging me in without asking for my password. The only thing is, I've disabled auto login and it shouldn't be doing that.
When I first boot up Ubuntu all I have to do is select my username, no password required to log in. I want the login screen to prompt me for my password for better security.
Here are the settings I already have:

I have enabled automatic login in Lubuntu, and have now added a second user, I want to DISABLE the automatic login, or perhaps change the default login. View 9 Replies View RelatedWhenever I boot up my computer, Ubuntu (10.4) brings me to my desktop, then immediately displays a prompt to enter my login keyring. After some searching on the forums, it appears that this is because I set my laptop to auto-login. Am I missing something here, but what does auto-login have to do the the keyring? Why do I even need to enter that password? I understand that many Ubuntu users are picky about security, but why isn't their any option to disable this? It's almost as bad as UAC from Vista, which is one of the reasons I'm dual-booting Ubuntu in the first place. This is an annoying "problem" that has been bugging me since I first installed Ubuntu - how can I change it?

View 9 Replies View RelatedIt used to be that this was a service that could just be disabled in System>Preferences>Startup Services, but this is no longer the case it seems. I've tried tinkering with the runlevels in gdm.conf, but haven't had any success with it so far. I've tried commenting out the startup code in the gdm.conf as well. Also no luck.
Most of what I've found are older guides for Karmic and earlier, so if anyone has a more up-to-date solution for how to disable the gdm so I can auto-login to a terminal in Lucid
This is the same question refer to:[URL].. On the login screen, I ticked magnifier in Universal Accessibility Preferences. Now I cannot log-in. However for some reason, I even cannot initial terminal by ctrl+alt+f1.
btw, I did this because the log-in screen in 10.04 is not as nice as the one in 9.10. I was trying to see whether I can change the log-in screen. Anyone knows about this as well? Please help me to sort out "magnifier problem" first.
No matter how many times I press the mute button on my laptop, when I turn it on I get the drums, and when I login I get the music -- at least 2 seconds of it before the mute button will respond. This is not great for turning on the laptop in a quiet lecture hall! I googled for some solutions to this problem, and none of the suggested pathways seem to work with Maverick: System>Preferences>Sound no longer has the option to choose the login sound "System>Administration>Login Screen" has a checkbox labeled "Play login sound," but I have it unchecked and the login sound plays regardless. Is there any way to turn off the login sound in Maverick so I can turn on my computer in peace?
