I want to disable the login sound, and System->Administration->Login Screen has an option that seems to be relevant. However, it has no effect. I know the file is at [/usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/desktop-login. ogg]; would I hurt anything by moving it?I have searched Google and gconf-editor, to no avail.
View 2 RepliesI'd like to disable the log-in screen sound. Not after you log on. Since it's my laptop I can't just switch a knob or press the off button. The function keys don't work before log-in.. Well not for sound at least.. I guess you could say it's a bug.. unless it was intended. Anyway, without filling a bug report how can I disable sound @ the login screen?

In Ubuntu 10.04, how do you disable the sounds that are played when the graphical login screen is shown, and after you login? There used to be a friendly System->Administration dialog to disable these, but every version seems to move everything around or simply drop useful features.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop -- clean HD, no other partitions.
(It's odd, though; when I go to System -> About Ubuntu, it tells me I have version 11.04 Natty Narwhal.)
Anyhow, when switching on my laptop, a short drumming sound effect can be heard when the login prompt appears on the GUI.
There are numerous threads on the Internet explaining various methods to disable this. I have done everything as instructed in these threads to no avail, including:
1) System -> Administration -> Login Screen -> Unlock -> [enter password] -> make sure "Play login sound" is unchecked (it was already) -> Close
2) System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications -> uncheck "Gnome Login Sound" -> Close
3) System -> Preferences -> Sound -> Sound Effects -> Alert volume -> check "Mute" -> Sound theme -> No sounds -> Close
It's foolproof, really. Nevertheless, when restarting the computer, the drum sound is heard again at the login prompt.
I realize I can simply find and delete the sound files, but isn't that a bit harsh? Surely there must be a more elegant way to silence the login.
Title is simple, how do i mute sounds at login screen? Somewhere on net i found it's in Login Screen preferences. Unfortunately these prefereces are greyed out - i tried start them as root with sudo too. What now?

I just finished installing 10.10 on my pc. the problem is that i cant login to the desktop i enter the password, the login sound plays and im stuck looking at the wallpaper. nothing else. i tried logging in safe mode and it worked. how can i get it to work normally?

When I first boot up Ubuntu all I have to do is select my username, no password required to log in. I want the login screen to prompt me for my password for better security.

I have enabled automatic login in Lubuntu, and have now added a second user, I want to DISABLE the automatic login, or perhaps change the default login. Whenever I boot up my computer, Ubuntu (10.4) brings me to my desktop, then immediately displays a prompt to enter my login keyring. After some searching on the forums, it appears that this is because I set my laptop to auto-login. Am I missing something here, but what does auto-login have to do the the keyring? Why do I even need to enter that password? I understand that many Ubuntu users are picky about security, but why isn't their any option to disable this? It's almost as bad as UAC from Vista, which is one of the reasons I'm dual-booting Ubuntu in the first place. This is an annoying "problem" that has been bugging me since I first installed Ubuntu - how can I change it?

View 9 Replies View RelatedIt used to be that this was a service that could just be disabled in System>Preferences>Startup Services, but this is no longer the case it seems. I've tried tinkering with the runlevels in gdm.conf, but haven't had any success with it so far. I've tried commenting out the startup code in the gdm.conf as well. Also no luck.
Most of what I've found are older guides for Karmic and earlier, so if anyone has a more up-to-date solution for how to disable the gdm so I can auto-login to a terminal in Lucid

No matter how many times I press the mute button on my laptop, when I turn it on I get the drums, and when I login I get the music -- at least 2 seconds of it before the mute button will respond. This is not great for turning on the laptop in a quiet lecture hall! I googled for some solutions to this problem, and none of the suggested pathways seem to work with Maverick: System>Preferences>Sound no longer has the option to choose the login sound "System>Administration>Login Screen" has a checkbox labeled "Play login sound," but I have it unchecked and the login sound plays regardless. I've just installed Ubuntu 10.04 desktop. I've created two user accounts, one for admin purposes and the other for standard users. At boot up, I have the option to pick one of the created accounts or select "automatic login." When I select automatic login, it logs me into the admin account. I've double checked that the "don't ask for password" option is not selected on either account.
The only thing unusual that I did was select the "don't ask for password" option during the install, and then later (after the install was complete) decided that's not what I wanted and unchecked it.
I need to accomplish one of two things. Either change it so the auto login applies to the standard user account, or remove the auto login option from the login screen altogether.
How can I disable the password request when i login? Not the password for the user but the password to connect to the net?

I have dual screens running at 1920x1080. I am dual booting with Windows 7 but I don't think that should make a difference (BURG is my bootloader). i created a user apache in group apache and by useradd and groupadd command. i am working on a user called server and group is also server. The login screen shows both the users apache and server. My concern is that if sombody has the password to the username apache, hecan login. How do you disable user apache on the login screen so that it only shows user server.
