I have Grub Legacy (from PCLOS) in my MBR and I would like to keep it as my primary bootloader. I am trying to install Zenwalk, which uses Lilo, onto another partition. My initial thoughts are not to install Lilo when installing Zenwalk and then installing Grub as a secondary bootloader into the same partition as Zenwalk. Will it work? Is there a better way?
This is the first distro I am installing that doesn't use Grub
I have just installed Zenwalk linux. My only problem (so far) is that now that it is installed it won't boot. After selecting the Zenwalk linux option in lilo, it says

After that it loads up the boot screen and hangs. Is there a command that I can add to the boot line to try to make it so that I can see any errors?
I noticed recently my XFCE 4 is missing its background. I seem to have falled back to some gray background. I noticed icons/files that should be in desktop is also missing. Seems like desktop is broken somehow Whats wrong? The single panel holding window buttons etc is still working. ( debian jessie )
View 3 Replies View RelatedI had this problem in Xubuntu Natty where my gdm theme reset to a generic theme with a plain black background. I saw a post saying that installing gnome-settings-daemon could fix this, and after installing it the gdm itself was fixed, but now I have this ugly brown background that I can't change. I installed gdm-tweaker, but the wallpaper I set didn't show up. Is there something else I can do to fix this?

View 14 Replies View RelatedA couple weeks after I installed the xfce desktop version of Linux Mint, I became unable to log in to my own desktop. I enter my password, but the screen fades to black and then fades back in to the login screen.
I am able to log in using the recovery mode terminal and everything works as expected. I can log in to the Mint desktop as root, but the superuser can't view my files. Instead, there are only a .desktop file and a README telling me that my files have been unmounted (they're not on their own partition) and they give me instructions on how to remount them.
So I follow the instructions. Running the .desktop through the browser GUI quickly opens and closes a terminal, doing nothing. Running ecryptfs-mount-private, as the README recommends, reports:

And that's where I'm stuck.
Is there a way to avoid changing the wallpaper/Desktop background other the onces which come as default on fedora?

View 1 Replies View RelatedLooking for a light desktop for a P3/512MB I installed xubuntu and I felt it slow. For a test, just tried installing lubuntu and it was so fast compared to xubuntu. The word here is I would like to move to xfce. Doing another test, I installed Debian Lenny + xfce and was way much faster than xubuntu.
My question: Can I install Ubuntu Desktop command only + xfce ? Is it going to be faster than xubuntu? Is there another recommendation for a debian based distro with xfce which runs faster than xubuntu?
Up until KDE4 I could select a different image for each of the 4 virtual desktops. Now I tried Suse11.1 KDE and it seems like there is no such option. I can change the background image allright, but all 4 desktops have the SAME image.
View 4 Replies View RelatedSo I have used ubuntu for about 2 years now, and this has never been an issue. Basically my trackpad(touchpad) on my laptop stops working when the wallpaper and other gui aspects load. The mouse works in windows and works in ubuntu for a few seconds while the screen is still black and gui is loading. So I know ubuntu does know it exists.
This problem occured after watching a movie and ubuntu froze up. Also while watching the movie I had the trackpad disabled, which might have something to do with my problem. (I have a hpdv6500 which has a button on the trackpad to disable it. I did no software tricks or hacks to do it). After resetting my computer the problem existed and persists every time I turn it on and off. So does anyone have any experience with such a problem or maybe how to reset the settings of the mouse?
The screen will show a blinking cursor for a few seconds. The keyboard works and a signal is found for the speakers. Then the 'Ubuntu' loading screen will show but at this point the screen would freeze and the keyboard will cease to function. At this point I have to reboot from the on/off switch. It can take several attempts before the desktop will load, or if I'm lucky, it'll load up first time. I've had this problem since 9.10. I'm not quite sure why it's taken me this long to attempt to sort it out.
View 6 Replies View Relatedis it would be possible create a Ubuntu dvd that contains the ubuntu server desktop and alternate install opptions, as well as all four main desktop environments (gnome, kde, xfce, lxde) and unity. since much of the data is redundant between each version cd's it would probably all fit on one disk. then all that would be needed is two disks one for 32 bit and another for 64 bit. i really think that this could work.

When I logged out and logged back into my user, the gnome panel menu was transparent as It should be however, the desktop background changed color and I cannot change the desktop by right clicking the desktop. If I do right click and try to, the entire desktop and all programs freeze. The mouse works but that is it. Whenever I try to open gnome-color-chooser, I get this error message : ERROR Could not open or create file /home/User/.gtkrc-2.0-gnome-color-chooser. I have uninstalled and reinstalled both gnome color chooser and gnome panel with no luck.
View 1 Replies View RelatedJust recently installed fedora 11 64-bit on my laptop. Everything was fine until today. Everytime I boot up, it crashes right after the desktop loads. Everything is loaded except the area where the running programs are on the taskbar is just one big white block. And a bubble popup says "New SELinux security alert. AVC denial." but everything is frozen. Can't move the cursor or use keyboard. and nothing is happening on the screen. Completly frozen. Anybody have any ideas on what is wrong and how to fix it?

Can I create a run level 7, like rc7.d, that will execute after the desktop loads (and everything else)? I symlinked the second script to level 5 rd5.d, and it didn't go through. I haven't tried level 6.
How do I get it to display a different desktop background for each desktop? I'm sure I saw this option somewhere, but I can't find it again.
Secondly, it defaults with 4 desktops in a 2X2 grid layout. I changed it to 2, then back to 4 and now it has 4 desktops in a linear layout (1x4). How can I change it back to 2X2?

View 4 Replies View Relatedlast night I updated F12 XFCE on my Acer Aspire One 8Gb SSD, there were about 140+ issues to update.
after reboot the dialog to select a user and login appeared, continuing nothing shows up -- no menu, no taskbar, no volumes, just the beautiful F12 background.
pressing ALT - F2 I am able to start commands, eg Thunar shows up displaying all volumes, files and even NFS remote drives. my conclusion is that everything works except the desktop...
how I can start the XFCE desktop environment so I can use the GUI?
I installed it to check it out and I'm not a big fan... so how do I uninstall it to avoid getting the updates for it? I installed it through yum directly.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've had this problem for a long time (since I first installed 11.2) but I hoped KDE SC 4.4 would fix it for me. Since it didn't, I decided to make a thread about it. I have a really weird problem ─ I can only set svg graphics as desktop backgrounds. I can't put any kind of png/jpg (haven't tried others) picture as a wallpaper. All I get is a black background. The weather backgrounds etc. work perfectly fine. I can create a svgz file in Inkscape and insert a png image in it but that's kind of a stupid workaround for a problem. Has anyone encountered a problem like this?

I also notice that when I run a program that installs anything that screen dims (gets like this grey opacity I guess) after a period of time. I am plugged into the wall so the laptop is NOT running on battery.Is there some setting I need to tweak after this latest install? This did NOT occur prior to samesaid.
