Right now I'm an ace at setting up partitions, software RAID and LVM volumes etc through the installer, but if I ever need to do the same thing once the system's up and running then I become unstuck.
Is there any way I can get to partman post-install, or any similar tools that do the same thing? Or failing that are there any simple guides to doing these things through the various command line tools?
Debian Installation :: Raid LVM Grub2 Will Not Install
Apr 20, 2015I have created a system using four 2Tb hdd. Three are members of a soft-raid mirrored (RAID1) with a hot spare and the fourth hdd is a lvm hard drive separate from the RAID setup. All hdd are gpt partitioned.
The RAID is setup as /dev/md0 for mirrored /boot partations (non-lvm) and the /dev/md1 is lvm with various logical volumes within for swap space, root, home, etc.
When grub installs, it says it installed to /dev/sda but it will not reboot and complains that "No boot loader . . ."
I have used the supergrubdisk image to get the machine started and it finds the kernel but "grub-install /dev/sda" reports success and yet, computer will not start with "No boot loader . . ." (Currently, because it is running, I cannot restart to get the complete complaint phrase as md1 is syncing. Thought I'd let it finish the sync operation while I search for answers.)
I have installed and re-installed several times trying various settings. My question has become, when setting up gpt and reserving the first gigabyte for grub, users cannot set the boot flag for the partition. As I have tried gparted and well as the normal Debian partitioner, both will NOT let you set the "boot flag" to that partition. So, as a novice (to Debian) I am assuming that "boot flag" does not matter.
Other readings indicate that yes, you do not need a "boot flag" partition. "Boot flag" is only for a Windows partition. This is a Debian only server, no windows OS.

Jan 13, 2011I have two 320GB Seagate 7200.4 hard drives on my laptop and I am looking to set them up as a RAID 0 array to install Debian on. After reading a bit online I wanted to seek some guidance with this as this is my first time setting up software RAID. My biggest concern is how to maximize performance of the array with regards to block sizes, chunk sizes, stripe sizes, filesystem types, etc. etc. It seems there are a lot more nuances to setting up a RAID array (properly) than I thought there would be
Edit: It also appears that grub2 cannot be installed to /dev/sda when the drives are setup in RAID 0. Is there an easy way around this? I read somewhere that if you select to install grub to the RAID partition it will work? Is that the case, or do I need to do something else to get grub to boot directly to the raid array?
Debian Installation :: Will Not Boot After Install On Areca ARC-1110 RAID
Dec 1, 2010I performed an install using the 5.0.6 amd64 netinst cd on a dual opteron server with an Areca ARC-1110 4-port SATA hardware RAID card. I have 2 250GB drives set up as RAID 1. The debian install saw it as only one drive, just as it should. Install went smoothly, but on reboot, the system would not load.
I did some research and tried a couple of things with no luck. Like adding a delay in the grub command. It jus sits at loading system for a while then times out and loads busy box. Just to check things out, I booted into an Ubuntu live-cd and mounted the volume. The file system is there and all of the necessary files. How to use one of these cards successfully?
Debian Configuration :: Can't Correctly Install Grub On RAID Array
Nov 26, 2015I'm having issues with a RAID array.
Setup is like this:
Debian Jessie, 2 hard disks, each having 2 partitions: /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2, /dev/sdb1, /dev/sdb2. Partitions were paired during installation, so they form /dev/md0 and /dev/md1. /dev/md0 is the root (/) partition, /dev/md1 is for /home.
At the end of the install process, I chose /dev/sda1 to carry Grub. And I think this is where I screwed things up.
After removing one of the hard drives, there was no boot capability. So, I installed Grub on /dev/sdb, too.
Now it displays the boot menu but cannot find the kernel. This is where I got lost in the process.
Do I need to reinstall the OS or is there a way to fix it? I suppose I have to edit Grub.

Feb 11, 2010The RAID level 1 interested me because of its redundancy in both drives. And I successfully made it in a couple of partitions. But, I always did it after Linux installation. Then, I create both partitions, use 'mdadm' to create raidtab and RAID device (md0, for example) and then I format the RAID device with 'mkfs' and mount it.
Until there, it's all OK.
But my problem is to mirror ALL the hard disk, inclusive root partition. To do that, I guess I need no Linux installation, then create the RAID (md0, raidtab, etc) and after that install Linux in RAID device created.
But I'm new in Linux world and I have no idea how to do that.
I use Debian Lenny, so I need a solution that uses only the first DVD of this distribution.
General :: Debian Software RAID 1- Boot From Both Disk
Mar 15, 2011I newly installed debian squeeze with software raid. The way I did was, as also given in this thread.
- I have 2 HDD with 500 GB each. For each of them, I created 3 partitions (/boot, / and swap)
- I selected the hard drive and created a new partition table
- I created a new partition that was 1GB. I then specified to use the partition as a Physical Volume for RAID. and used for /boot and enabled bootable.
- Created another partition, which is of 480 GB, and then specified to use the partition as a Physical Volume for RAID. and used for /.
- Created another partion and used for swap
Then RAID configuration:
Through Configure RAID menu -> create MD device ->
(2 for the number of drives, 0 for spare devices)
Next select the partitions you want to be members of /dev/MD0. I selected /dev/sda1 and /dev/sdb1 (for /boot)
Next select the partitions you want to be members of /dev/MD1. I selected /dev/sda6 and /dev/sdb6 (for /)
And no RAID for swap partitions
'Finish Partitioning and write changes to disk' --> Finish the rest of the install like normal. Everything is ok now, except I am not sure how to test my raid config. When I pull the power of the HDD, it only boots from one disk. I read in some forum that I may have to install GRUB manually on the other. In Debian Squeeze, there is no grub command. Not sure how to make my software raid bootable from both disk. I configured /boot partitions of both disks to be boot=yes. Not sure whether that is ok.
General :: Convert To RAID 1 After OS Install?
Nov 16, 2009I've got a couple of boxes (one linux and one Win Vista) that I want to enable the hardware RAID 1 (mirrored drives). I've not worked with RAID before. I don't really know much about RAID, but from what I've gathered from google, it seems like I may have to enable the RAID first in the BIOS and then reinstall. Is that correct or is there a way to enable the onboard RAID without reinstalling? I was hoping to clone the drive with dd and then enable RAID 1 in the bios and viola! Since one of the machines is my parents' (the Vista box), I'd prefer to do something non-destructive. I may just setup a backup mechanism for them where at least they have the data files backed up to the other drive. If I have to reinstall mine (Debian Lenny), I may bite the bullet and do the reinstall.

Feb 1, 2011Could any RAID gurus kindly assist me on the following RAID-5 issue?I have an mdadm-created RAID5 array consisting of 4 discs. One of the discs was dropping out, so I decided to replace it. Somehow, this went terribly wrong and I succeeded in marking two of the drives as faulty, and the re-adding them as spare.
Now the array is (logically) no longer able to start:
mdadm: Not enough devices to start the array.Degraded and can't create RAID ,auto stop RAID [md1]
I was able to examine the disks though:

Aug 15, 2011I wish to install Linux Mint 11 with RAID 1 for my /home. I was wondering if I can install RAID 1 during the installation from the Live CD.I have managed to set up RAID from the Live CD and install Linux Mint 11 to it, but on reboot it will not recognize the RAID volume as mdadm is not installed. Can I install RAID drivers from my Live CD onto the installed Mint using chroot and get Mint to recognise the volumes on reboot? Is there a better alternative?
I know this would be a trivial exercise using the Alternate CD in Ubuntu but Mint does not have an Alternate CD (at least that I aware of).

With the card doing it the machines crashes as soon as it tries to boot the first time, with suse doing the raid I just get 'GRUB' on the screen It seems a lot of people are having similar problems, does any one have any pointers. 11.2 installs fine. Jul 18, 2011I have a raid5 on 10 disk, 750gb and it have worked fine with grub for a long time with ubuntu 10.04 lts. A couple of days ago I added a disk to the raid, growd it and then resized it.. BUT, I started the resize-process on a terminal on another computer, and after some time my girlfriend powered down that computer!
So the resize process cancelled in the middle and i couldn't acess any of the HDDs so I rebooted the server.
Now the problem, the system is not booting up, simple black with a blinking line. Used a rescue CD to boot it up, finised the resize-process and the raid seems to be working fine so I tried to boot normal again. Same problem. Rescue cd, updated grub, got several errors: error: unsupported RAID version: 0.91. I have tried to purge grub, grub-pc, grub commmon, removed /boot/grub and installed grub again. Same problem.
I have tried to erased mbr (# dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/sdX bs=446 count=1) on sda (ide disk, system), sdb (sata, new raid disk). Same problem. Removed and reinstalled ubuntu 11.04 and is now getting error: no such device: (hdd id). Again tried to reinstall grub on both sda and sdb, no luck. update-grub is still generating error about raid id 0.91 and is back on a blinking line on normal boot. When you'r resizeing a raid MDADM changed the ID from 0.90 to 0.91 to prevent something that happend happened. But since I have completed the resize-process MDADM have indeed changed the ID back to 0.90 on all disks.
I have also tried to follow a howto on a similar problem with a patch on [URL] But I cant compile, various error about dpkg. So my problem is, I cant get grub to work. It just gives me a blinking line and unsupported RAID version: 0.91.

Nov 26, 2010I have installed Ubuntu on my m1530 since 8.04 and currently dual boot Win7 and 10.10. I would like to dual boot on my PC, but I have run into a problem. I am not a pro at Ubuntu, but this problem I can not solve by reading forums like I have in the past.
I realize this is a common problem, but I have noticed people having success.
I have a M4A87TD EVO MB with two Seagate drives in Raid 0. (The raid controller is a SB850 on that MB) I use the raid utility to create the raid drive that Windows7x64 uses. I have 2 partitions and 1 unused space. Partition 1 is Windows, partition 2 is for media, and the remaining unused space is for Ubuntu.
I am running ubuntu-10.10-desktop-amd64 off a Cruzer 16GB flash drive that was installed via Universal-USB-Installer-1.8.1.4.
My problem like so many others is that when I load into Ubuntu, gparted detects two separate hard drives instead of the raid. I read that this is because kpartx is not installed on 10.10. I then went in LiveCD mode and downloaded kpartx from Synaptic Manager. Gparted still reported two drives. I opened terminal and run a few commands with kpartx. I received an error. (Forgive me I didn't write it down, but I believe it said something about a communication error. I will try again later and see.)
Currently I am reflashing the Cruzer with a persistence of 4GB. I am not familiar with this process, but I understand that my LiveCD boot will save information I download to it. I decided to try this method because I was going to install kpartx and reboot to see if this made a difference.
I am looking for any suggestions on a different method or perhaps someone to tell me that the raid controller or some hardware isn't supported. I did install ubuntu-10.10-alternate-amd64 on my flash drive, but fail to get past detecting my CD-ROM drive since it's not plugged in. If this method is viable, I will plug it in. I also watched the ..... video were a guy creates Raid 0 with the alternated CD, but it wasn't a dual boot and didn't use a raid controller from a MB.

Mar 27, 2010I'm running Karmic Server with GRUB2 on a Dell XPS 420. Everything was running fine until I changed 2 BIOS settings in an attempt to make my Virtual Box guests run faster. I turned on SpeedStep and Virtualization, rebooted, and I was slapped in the face with a grub error 15. I can't, in my wildest dreams, imagine how these two settings could cause a problem for GRUB, but they have. To make matters worse, I've set my server up to use Luks encrypted LVMs on soft-RAID. From what I can gather, it seems my only hope is to reinstall GRUB. So, I've tried to follow the Live CD instructions outlined in the following article (adding the necessary steps to mount my RAID volumes and LVMs). [URL]
If I try mounting the root lvm as 'dev/vg-root' on /mnt and the boot partition as 'dev/md0' on /mnt/boot, when I try to run the command $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0, I get an errors: grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR. This is a BAD idea. grub-setup: error: Embedding is not possible, but this is required when the root device is on a RAID array or LVM volume.
Somewhere in my troubleshooting, I also tried mounting the root lvm as 'dev/mapper/vg-root'. This results in the grub-install error: $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0 Invalid device 'dev/md0'
Obviously, neither case fixes the problem. I've been searching and troubleshooting for several hours this evening, and I must have my system operational by Monday morning. That means if I don't have a solution by pretty early tomorrow morning...I'm screwed. A full rebuild will by my only option.

I am having trouble installing Ubuntu 10.04 on a HP Z600 with a two disc raid system. Is there a way to solve this without using the alternate cd (where the data files seem to be corrupted). The regular 10.04 cant find any drives on which to install, the 10.04 alternate cds all have corrupted files. I have tried downloading the .iso from two mirrors as well as from .torrent, all have data problems. The HASH checksums are fine, only the data on the burned discs are wrong. I have also tried using a USB install, but there are problems there aswell. At the moment I have win 7 on the disc as on the other partition, and have been using Ubuntu 10.10 (that is now an unbootable broken system), but have to downgrade to 10.04 becasue of software requirements.
The RAID seems to be an INTEL Raid . From HP homepage: Integrated 6 channel SATA 3 Gb/s controller with RAID (0, 1, 5 or 10) capability, optional SAS controller, LSI 3041E 4-port SAS/SATA, with RAID (0, 1 or 10) capability

Dec 13, 2010Did a CD install, 64 bit Ubuntu 10.10 on Intel dx38 MB with Intel raid on two 160g drives.
I setup the raid drives (raid 1 mirrored) prior to installing. Install went without problems. On reboot the volume will not boot. I brought up again from CD and the volume is clean and mountable. There are two partitions - dm-1 and dm-2 swap
What can I do to make this boot?

I recently purchased a SATA 2.0 Raid PCI controller that I will be putting in the computer and 2 new 750 GB Western Digital Caviar Green Hard drives. I wish to add the two drives in a Raid 1 configuration to store all my Pictures, Files, and Movies on. Every instruction and tutorial I can find on setting up Raid on Linux assumes you are performing a fresh install on Linux and gives no tips or instructions for current installations. I already have Ubuntu installed and do not wish to have to reinstall it. I want to leave my installation on the 300 GB drive and just add in the 2 750GB drives for storage.

Jul 19, 2010I have an old Fedora machine setup to use Raid-1. I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop on it, but the installer can't seem to override the raid partition. I have two 80GB drives, but the "Prepare disk space" screen only shows one 80GB partition called "/dev/mapper/isw_dfafhagdgg_RAID_Volume01". When I selected "Erase and use the entire disk", it gives me the error "The ext4 file system creation in partition #1 of Serial ATA RADI isw_dfafhagdgg_RAID_Volume0 (mirror) failed".
So I tried going back and specifying partitions manually. However, it only shows me the one device /dev/mapper/isw_dfafhagdgg_RAID_Volume01, and I can't delete it to get my original two hard drives, so I can recreate a RAID-1 setup. What am I doing wrong? I thought Ubuntu supported software RAID-1?
