A misuse of Pen Drive is reported and it happens every alternative day that someone unplug and theft the drive attached.There is no camera facility to monitor.I have a plan to write a script which will login to every machine through ILO and watch the USB availability. In case anyone dettach the USB, a mail will be sent to the administrator and thereby the steps could be taken.Does this idea look feasible.

Now I have the following problem the LVM file system don't mount properly.If I open the mount point I see only a few files of the LVM disk. If I want to unmount the disk I get the following error:
umount /data/
umount: /data/: not mounted
If I want to mount the volume I get the following error:
mount -a
mount: /dev/mapper/gegevens-Data already mounted or /data busy
I have a pretty powerful computer and GPU that I'd like to fully utilize.I've been using Linux for the better part of 10 years and I'd like to know (as I can't think of a way) how I can use a single PC as a desktop AND a media center.My vision would be to essentially have to separate workstations on one PC. My desk monitor will be station one (desktop) and my TV will be station two (media center)... both should work independently of each other as if neither knows the other exists.

Whenever I try to add something like right click on it, it doesn't respond.
View 1 Replies View RelatedYesterday, after I first installed Slackware 13.1 I had no trouble replacing the default wallpaper with a simple gradient. Very easy. Today, (after re-formatting the drive and re-installing the entire system because I messed around with a script and it wouldn't boot) I can't change it. I spent about an hour messing around with menus and settings trying to figure out how I did it, and eventually, as a last resort, turned to the help file. It tells me to choose Configure Desktop from pop-up menu when right-click on the background.
But Configure Desktop doesn't appear in the pop-up menu. (At least, not anymore it doesn't.) The help file also says to use the Control Center, but I can't find any trace of that either. I haven't the slightest idea why these are missing. Since I re-installed everything onto a freshly re-formatted drive, anything I played around with before shouldn't have any effect on the new installation. The problem is there both when I login as root and user. I really don't want to try re-installing everything again.
The only changes I've made to the system since the re-install is to edit /etc/inittab to replace the 3 in id:3:initdefault: with a 4, so I get a graphical login, and to edit /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 to place an & at the end of the dhcpcd request which, according to the instructions I was following should put it in the background to speed up boot-time slightly. I haven't (knowingly) played around with anything that should affect KDE, except changing settings from within the KDE menus. I know it's probably going to be something very simple, and possibly obvious in retrospect, but I'm new to Linux and have no idea what I'm doing here.
Few weeks ago I installed Linux Ubuntu 9.10 and everything was fine. However, Iḿ now triyng to install programs from the Ubuntu Software Center and it does not work properly. I just select the program I want to install and press the button, but I do not get a response. Net connection is ok, so the problem is somewhere else.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy Ubuntu Software Center hangs on an installation of a downloaded .deb file from astah-community. It's a tool for UML software design. The installation was almost complete and then got stuck for some reason. I tried to click cancel but that didn't work. I closed USC and when I opened it again nothing had changed. I shut down the computer, restarted, opened USC and it was still there.
I am new to ubuntu, so how can I get the installation cancelled? I saw another post on a similar problem, where the problem was solved with:
sudo dpkg --purge --force-all astah-community
but I got:
dpkg: status database area is locked by another process
Okay so I have now run into my first problem I cant seem to find a solution to.
I have downloaded a .deb file and discovered that you can run them through Ubuntu Software Center to avoid using the terminal. It seems to me that you can even do this if the program is not a part of the Software Center listed programs.
So this is what I did and it now says that my program has been installed.
I want to measure the system load on my Ubuntu media center computer. What commands and utilities are available? I've explored the w, top, iostat, and uptime commands. Anything else I could use?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm about at wit's end trying to figure out how to get Fedora 10 (can't go upgrade past that version, due to no more support for the integrated Radeon S300 graphics) on my HP Media Center desktop to resume after suspend- or to disable suspend, or anything that will prevent the computer from hanging after a period of inactivity. I have tried various combinations of noapm, noacpi, s4_nohwsig, etc., etc.; nothing helped. Actually, noacpi might have helped, I don't know, because disabling ACPI somehow disables internet as well, and I'm not willing to pay that price.I went into the CMOS RAM setup (both before and after updating the BIOS to the latest version), and the only Power options available were "After AC Power Failure," "WOL in S4," and "XD (Execute Disable)."Does anyone perchance know the magical solution to make the problem go away, aside from reverting to Windows?

I am trying to install several of the packages listed in the repositories for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS from the Ubuntu SoftwarecCenter. I get the error message: "The action would require the installation of packages from not authenticated sources."
How can this be...they are in the repository. Doesn't that mean they are authenticated?
By the way, under sources, I selected "Server for the United States".
What can I do to fix this?
when i start an application it usually places it in the upper left corner or lower right corner or something like that.. but never in the middle of my screen. How can I configure GNOME to always open applications in the middle of my screen..?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've recently installed Slackware 13.0 without a hitch (I haven't tweaked much yet), ran adduser, switched to the new account in a second virtual screen, typed in 'startx' and was pleased to see things start up.
Then I discovered the widescreen display was off center, leaving a black bar on the right edge of the screen and the menu button in the lower left corner completely off screen and not visible (even the menu when I was able to click around and pull it up shows only the right edge of the menu box). I have no idea how to properly configure a widescreen and the documentation is a little confusing.
This is my first Linux experience so probably at the prenewbie level. I have installed Xubuntu and played with it for a couple weeks. The question is about software download attempts from Ubuntu Software center. When I attempt to use it I get the error messages:

Check if you are currently running another software management tool, e.g. Synaptic or aptitude. Only one tool is allowed to make changes at a time. The package indexes are currently changed by apt-get. Does this mean that SPM is active and the Software Center will not function until I change enablement between the two? If so, how do I accomplish the task?

Is there any way to set byte order in Linux is big endian?

I wanted to install an entirely clean version of kmail, so I uninstalled/re-installed kmail via YAST. I manually deleted ~/.kde4/share/apps/kmail. After installing kmail I found that the account data of my Yahoo account were still listed in the kmail configuration panel. Shall I delete the Yahoo account within kmail prior to uninstalling the kmail package?

I've been using Excel from OpenOffice with moderate success for the last year. Now I've just tried to open a new spreadsheet and I'm suddenly getting a highly condensed view. The cells are about 1mm X 4mm. If I expand them by selecting and dragging, then try to copy data from another spreadsheet onto the new one, the data shrinks to the small scale -- unreadable.

View 1 Replies View RelatedWe purchased a new database system at work last October, ditching the old system because of a lack of support from the vendor. This is a retail Point of Sale and Backoffice database system. I am not sure what system the new one runs on, but the system we replaced was a Firebird data base. The reason I am posting is because we are now in need of the information contained in the old database which was not completely imported into the new system.
Basically the problem is this: The database in on a Windows XP system and I found a copy of SQL Manager Lite 2008 on the system, which after quite a bit of studying, I figured out how to extract the database into a removable file. I have this file (178MB) on a USB stick in a file called Backoffice.fbd.
My studying suggests to me that I can get into this database with MySQL. I have never used this and have no clue how to do this. All I want to be able to do get into the database and create tab deliminated spreadsheet files for each of the database sections (Customers, Repairs, Sales History, stock files, etc.) Is it possible to do this with Ubuntu and MySQL and if so, can expert suggest one or two things to get me started. While a guided tutorial would be nice because I am not an expert, I am willing to learn on my own if someone could point me in the right direction.
