Security :: Setting Up Server With IPSec Authentication
Aug 6, 2010As part of the project I'm working on, I need to set up a server with IPSec authentication only connections to a large number of low bandwidth clients. I'm making use of the PF_KEY interface to populate the keys on the server and while prototyping things I've found that the initial setup is taking longer than I had expected. At the start of my test, entries are being added to the database at a rate of around 30/second, but as time goes on this is dropping significantly. I ran a test up to around 100k entries and by then the rate had dropped to 10/second. It's key to me that if I reboot my server that the Security Associations can be repopulated in a very short period, so I do genuinely need this to be much faster.
Two questions:
1) Does anyone have any experience of running with a large number of SAs set up, and if so what sort of setup rate did you get?
2) Are there things I can do to speed up the provisioning of these SAs? I'd really like to see a rate in the thousands per second.
We've been doing the prototyping on the 2.6 kernel.

Apr 3, 2010I've searched through google, and all I can find are instructions on how to set up a L2TP/IPSec VPN that works with macs and iPhones. I'm NOT trying to set up an L2TP/IPSec VPN. I'm trying to set up a pure-ipsec vpn.
The iPhone IPSec client is a built-in cisco client, I believe. I'm staying away from L2TP and PPTP because I need multicast packets to go through. *edit: wow, i just noticed that the title says "8.10 LTS". Oops! I obviously mean "8.04 LTS". Gah, the lack of sleep got to me.
Server :: Apache - Browsing The Same Website Simultaneously?
Feb 27, 2010Doing my final year project in linux- a Mozilla Firefox extension which providing chat option for two or more peoples,who happen to be browsing the same website simultaneously. It shows you other people who visit the same websites as you are. These people have to be registered with our software. I don't know how to go about this. After a lot of googling and enquiring i have divided the project into three modules: an extension at browser side, chat implementation (probably in ajax) and a server- apache-php-mysql.
The extension keeps track of the URLs visited by the browser. It sends this information to the server. When it receives information from the server, the extension displays the number of users visiting the URL as the user. The extension informs the server whenever the user clicks the EnableChat(which will be embedded in a toolbar in the browser) button to start a chat session. After receiving the information, the extension displays the users in that site. The user clicks on a particular username for chat.
I have installed php mysql and apache. but i do not know exactly what the server must do. I know i have to write the server code in php and put it in the /var/www folder. but what should that code do? how exactly does the extension or browser communicate with the server for the exchange of above info?

and when i usint "racoon -F" and try to ping these two laptop , it is not pinging at all. and alse "racoon -F" does not show any ESP and AH.
Server :: Automating Multiple Minicom Sessions Simultaneously
Oct 5, 2010Here's the setup: One x86 server (Red Hat 4) with two serial connections to an embedded linux device. One serial connection is to a power control so the device can the restarted, and the other is used for a console to this device. Both serial connections use minicom. People on my team VNC to the x86 server, where they find the two minicom sessions waiting for them as they are left open. I would like to automate connecting to the server and communicating over the serial lines.
Supposing I use ssh to the x86 server, could minicom be used over the serial lines without terminating the minicom processes seen through VNC? If not, is there a way to re-open those windows from within the ssh session, so a user who VNCs to the server won't have to reopen them? Could a single ssh connection control two minicom terminals simultaneously, or would there need to be two ssh connections? It is assumed a user and the automated process will *not* try to access the device at the same time; the automation would trigger during off hours.

I can reboot my system and sometimes eth1 is accessible from SSH, and other times eth0 is accessible. Then sometimes eth1 will just stop being pingable alltogether. Mar 25, 2010 There are some encfs folders with private data on the server and all data is exported via nfs to all other omputers in the house.I can mount the encfs folders on another computer (using encfs command) to work with the data, but I never dared to mount it on more than one computer simultaniously, because I fear the encrypted data might get corrupted if more than one computer mount and access it at the same time.
So I want to ask about your experience: Is it safe to mount an encfs folder on several computers at the same time? All computers use "hard" and "sync" as nfs mount options to minimize risks of data loss. But can I access the folders simultaniously, or do I risk corrupting the encfs encryption and lose everything?
General :: 2 Disks Failed Simultaneously On A RAID 5 Array?
Apr 15, 2011I have a home server running Openfiler 2.3 x64 with 4x1.5TB software RAID 5 array (more details on the hardware and OS later). All was working well for two years until several weeks ago, the array failed with two faulty disks at the same time. Well, those thing could happen, especially if one is using desktop-grade disks instead of enterprise-grade ones (way too expensive for a home server). Since is was most likely a false positive, I've reassembled the array:

Right. Once is just a coincident but twice in such a sort period of time means that something is wrong. I've reassembled the array and again, all the files were intact. But now was the time to think seriously about backing up my array, so I've ordered a 2TB external disk and in the meantime kept the server off. When I got the external drive, I hooked it up to my Windows desktop, turned on the server and started copying the files. After about 10 minutes two drives failed again. I've reassembled, rebooted and started copying again, but after a few MBs, the copy process reported a problem - the files were unavailable. A few retried and the process resumed, but a few MBs later it had to stop again, for the same reason. Several more stops like those and two disks failed again. Looking at the /var/log/messages file, I found a lot of error like these:

The motherboard is Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L based on Intel's G31 chipset, the 4 disks are Seagate 7200.11 (with a version of a firmware that doesn't cause frequent data corruption).

Sep 14, 2010i'd like to execute in several subdirectories that all have the same name, but I don't want to have to change into each subdirectory (there are hundreds) to execute the script. All the subdirectories have the same name ("final_alignments"), but are located in parent directories with different names. All these parent directories are in the same "super parent" directory. The Network configuration panel indicate both card status as active but i can only ping the first to be activated .
