I want to install a software called TinyOS which is an operating system designed for wireless sensor embedded networks in my account. The problem is it has instructions to install the software as an administrator since i'm not an admin of the department network i can not able to install. Is there any method to install this software as an user level rather than admin level.
View 3 Replies View Relatedhello everyone, im having a problem when my computer enters in the run level 4 as the default when i start slackware. The strange thing is that it not seems that is a X window problem, it looks like more like a configuration problem in some part of the kde script to initialize the log in, because if i manually start the X service it works fine, i dont know what is the source. Thank you in advance for the help.

Ive been trying to install Fedora 12 on a Dell Latitude C600, (Pentium III 750/600 MHz; 256 MB RAM; 250 KB Level 2 Cache; 8 MB Video Memory; ATI M3 Video Controller) Downloaded iso files from Fedora Project, Verified integrity with sha256sum.exe, burned to 5 CD's. Disc's 1 & 3 failed Linux test at installation. Burned Disk 1 twice more and still fails. Went ahead with installation. Chose to Use all of the 20 B hard disk. Would not install via graphical. Finished after Disk 1. After re-starting computer and logging into root, only get CLI operability and can't seem to get a GUI. I'm new to linux - just thought I'd put this laptop to use to familiarize myself with it.
View 3 Replies View RelatedRecently I installed the Matchbox desktop enviroment to try it out as I was going to use it on an embedded device (not any more though). When I Rebooted my PC, Matchbox came up (I didn't need to login). I unistalled Matchbox on Matchbox (and watched it break), restarted my PC and now GDM (Login manager) and Gnome won't show up after booting giving me a completely blank screen. I'm on Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS.

When I try to install ctags for vim editor, it gives me the following error. error while loading shared libraries: libldap.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
When I look into the /usr/lib folder, the file is naturally missing. I have this file.
When I tried to rename the soft link to libldap.so.2 it gave me a segmentation fault.
Where do I install the packages from ?
I've been able to kludge a kill script which finds the correct pid for the kdeserver (or gnome server) after my system comes up in run level 5 so I can drop back to run level 3 mode. Lots of experimentation showed me that using telinit 3 and telinit 5 would occasionally leave the video memory in a mess and I would have the black screen of death.
I set the security parameter setting to autologin for me since I am the only user of my machine, but I still have to kludge the default setting under sysconfig (the DEFAULT_WM) under Window Manager to pick a certain window manager, so it takes time to manually switch the desktop.
Right now I can leave the gui and drop back to cli, but painful experimenting showed me that killing the X server is a no no. Right now I kill the kde server, which sends the SIGTERM to the X windows manager, which then figures out that it has to shut down.
Questions: Is there a better way of doing this? Apparently openSUSE figures that we have multiple users logging into the gui desktop, so the gui is always kept running and a login window with the desktop manager option forces the user to login in. With autologin, this never happens, but no choice of desktop is possible on the fly.
Can some type of script be set up to painlessly enable this to happen? And what is the best way of bringing either the Gnome or KDE desktop manager down gracefully? I do get lots of error messages as the system attempts to recover and X shuts down. It appears that apparently the single user with autologin is left out in the cold.

View 1 Replies View RelatedOn windows I really only used Notepad++ as my text editor, it had two features that I loved. What I need to accomplish is what I would do with Notepad++ column editor.I could have like 100 lines, and place the cursor at a column, and goto edit>column editor, and I could insert an incrementing number. (I could also pad the incrementing number with 0s, this was GREAT for making batch files among other things.)So each line at that column had a number higher than the previous line. The other feature that I used sometimes was a search/replace with regex patterns.Does anyone know of an editor that has those features for linux? I am mostly after the column editor insert feature but if you know of one with both features that would rock.
View 1 Replies View Relatedi'm running 11.3 kde 4.4, with a Broadcom 4318. since installing 11.3 a few days ago, whenever i'm connected via wireless, one of two things always happen: when trying to play video (hulu, ....., etc.) in firefox, within a minute or so i will get the BSOD--that is, my screen will go black, and my cap/num lock lights will flash on and off. also, when regularly browsing the internet...not long after opening firefox, it will stop working like i have no connection, and then i will get a frozen screen and system within a minute or two after seeing a variation of this communication message:
"Message from syslogd@sbkra at Nov 2 21:09:53 kernel: [956.784417] process irq/11-b43 (pid: 1974, ti=debee000 task=dd291170 task.ti=debee000 Message from syslogd@sbkra at Nov 2 21:09:53 kernel: [956.784424] Stack: Message from syslog@sbkra at Nov 2 21:09:53 kernel: [956.784458] Call Trace: "a couple times, i've gotten this message and the following freeze when running video in firefox.
strangely, i have no problems running streaming audio through smplayer. and i have no problems playing saved video files through smplayer. and i have absolutely no problems whatsoever browsing or playing online video while connected via ethernet.
i've also searched through the various forum sections to try to address the issue, but nothing i've tried has worked. nor has anyone had a problem identical or even similar to this. btw...in relation to "broadcom", yast tells me that i have "b43-firmware" and "b43-fwcutter" installed. nothing else. i do not have "ndiswrapper" installed, because this gave me problems in 11.2, and this problem mentioned here was happening in 11.3 before i uninstalled "ndiswrapper". and the repos i have are: Packman, OSS, Non-OSS, and Update.

Hi Guys,
here is my scenario:
I am running F10 x86_64 with Nvidia Quadro FX 3400.
I installed the drivers and it worked just fine. No errors generated according to Nvidia log files.
However, while in run level 5 when I try to switch to run level 3 by typing "telinit 3" or "init 3" the X server goes down and I get a blank screen. Same thing happens when I try to switch to a different tty session by <ctrl>+<alt>+F2 (or any F key for that matter).
I also noticed that when I shut down my system I can't see any more the screen where services are shutting down and their status ([OK] or [failed]).
Would appreciate your help on solving this issue.
Hey Guys, I'am new here and request your help on this:

However, when I start in single mode, it works perfectly. I have tried looking for a solution from google, but in vein.

i just upgrade my system (64 bit) form 11.2 to 11.3 (via zypper).Since the upgrade, suse boots only in text mode. I installed the ATI drivers (ATI Radeon HD4890), now i only see a backscreen after the suse bootscreen. The system seems to boot correctly. I'm able to connect normally to the fts-server which is running on the machine.I even can't boot in runlevel 3, when i try to enter the bootloader.

View 1 Replies View RelatedEarlier this evening I suddenly had hundreds of "Bug Buddy" windows start popping up, which seemed to be stuck in an infinite loop. OpenSuse shows me this on boot:

On my fresh installed 11.4: I boot the desktop entry in GRUB, and it's doing a fast boot. It loads INIT and switchs to runlevel 7. Then the comment:
Code: init: No more processes left
Or something like that. after a CTRL+ALT+DEL and a press on enter during the driver load, it all works fine. Is that just a standard fault, or should I do something? If so, what?
I have installed OpenSuse 11.4 as a Xen guest on a host system running SLES11 and it gets stuck just as it reaches run level 3. I can ping it and various network ports are open but the virtual text console is unresponsive and I cannot ssh to the machine. Port 10080 (Amanda backup) is also open but not functioning properly. The odd thing is that this problem happened when I first installed the guest and then went away only to reappear when I rebooted after installing the latest kernel via Online Update.

I am trying to change the default screen resolution in Run Level 3 to 640x480. I have tried changing the menu.1st file and the vga=0x301 mode sticks until the system begins to boot and then resets to a higher resolution. View 6 Replies View RelatedI played the apprentice sorcerer trying to install mysql workbench by my own and I messed up the system 11.1 by removing accidentally some libraries and decided to jump on 11.4 by using the update feature from the DVD. It worked all good (it seems at least: I didn't lost any datas and all my servers are running ok) but there is no more X11 server (kde) running for the run level 5.
I checked the inittab file and it is set to 5. I can log on root account and now I'm searching how to install kde on this new 11.4 system. I didn't yet tried the failsafe option at boot. Is there a way to set up kde from the internet, my wifi connection is ok ? I saw that yast was not installed nore zypper nore yum. Do I first try another update to fix it (if possible) from DVD?
I have a VM based on SUSE 11.3 that boots into a console in run level 3. I am used GNOME so I am trying to get it installed but not having any success. I don't know a lot about the VM as I got it 2nd hand.
So far I have gone into YAST and installed gdm and all the dependencies. I have changed from Run level 3 to 5.
When I run startx I get

/etc/x11/xinit/xserverrc: line 56: exec: X: not found
giving up
xinit: No such file or directory (error2): unable to connect to X server

Main problem: newly installed Suse 11.2/Gnome from DVD i586 goes to white screen after auto login. I re-installed once with same results. I have limited understanding of linux.
System: Biostar M7NCD Ultra mainboard with NForce Ultra 400 chipset, AMD Barton 2500 (overclocked), GForce FX5200 NVIDEA video.
FYI: I used this exact video card on an older mainboard and ran linux with it no problem and all hardware checks out okay when I drop in a HD with XPpro on it, which makes this a linux software problem by my reckoning - video setup most likely. I can boot to the green Startup Options screen and then my ignorance starts to show.
I wanted to boot to level 3 then try some things (init 3, sax2 -r) I've read about on this forum and from www search but I'm password blocked in level 3!? Install only asked me for one password and it doesn't work here.
How do I deal with the level 3 password issue?
The 11.4 KDE live CD 64 bit and 32 bit fails at run level 5. The ATI card is a Radeon HD 6000 series. Screen is 1080P.
