I don't know nothing about programming and not much about linux os. I have now Fedora 12 and Gnome. I have 3 websites to maintain: ( Finnish Pikavippi sites )

I'd like to have a good editor, can you recomend any ? Suitable to Gnome? Need to code PHP and HTML
I have been trying to get Cinelerra, but keep getting errors like bash and stuff like that. Is there a good substitute video editor that is on par with Cinelerra? I had it before and like it, and would like something that is as straight forward to use as that.
I'm trying to view directly a partition with a damaged filesystem on it (NTFS) and so far the hex editors I tried do not do that. I tried GHex for example and it complained that /dev/sda is not a file. The partition is unmountable as NTFS however since it is damaged so I couldn't mount it first. Are there any hex editors out there that would allow me to view the contents directly and copy and paste stuff in there?
I'm running Linux lnx3-228 2.6.18-164.el5 #1 SMP Tue Aug 18 15:51:48 EDT 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux red hat linux.
When I try to install ctags for vim editor, it gives me the following error. error while loading shared libraries: libldap.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
When I look into the /usr/lib folder, the file is naturally missing. I have this file.
When I tried to rename the soft link to libldap.so.2 it gave me a segmentation fault.
On windows I really only used Notepad++ as my text editor, it had two features that I loved. What I need to accomplish is what I would do with Notepad++ column editor.I could have like 100 lines, and place the cursor at a column, and goto edit>column editor, and I could insert an incrementing number. (I could also pad the incrementing number with 0s, this was GREAT for making batch files among other things.)So each line at that column had a number higher than the previous line. The other feature that I used sometimes was a search/replace with regex patterns.Does anyone know of an editor that has those features for linux? I am mostly after the column editor insert feature but if you know of one with both features that would rock.
I wanted to avoid having to use my CDs, DVDs weren't an option, and I didn't have very large usb sticks. It seemed my only option for installing openSUSE onto my laptop was with some sort of network install/boot.
I ended up finding this really cool service, netboot.me. What you can do is download a very small image (<1MB) for a floppy, USB stick, or CD, and then boot off of it. Then you can either install pre-defined distros over the network (straight from the distro's servers), or you can make an account (by connecting your google account), and then make your own configuration. I managed to make a configuration for openSUSE 11.4, and I was able to completely install it, via only using one floppy disk and the internet!
My first step in the process was to download the floppy image. Since I was on a windows computer, I then downloaded rawwrite for windows, and I wrote the image straight to the floppy. After that, I restarted the computer and booted from the floppy. It loaded the image, then asked me to press a key or wait for 3 seconds. In order to boot from my configuration, this was the point where I had to press a key, and then choose the option of loading the custom configuration. The configuration I made has an ID of 434001 (which anyone is free to use). Unfortunately, according to their community, the gPXE "network stack" isn't very optimizied, so the initial two downloads took awhile (my speed was locked at 65 kB/s.)
It then began booting in the installation environment, which took about 15 minutes, although download speeds were now back at normal, faster speeds. I configured my installation, and let the package downloading begin!
I have been installing and uninstalling stuff about mouse properties and xorg.conf mouse section... and now I have several "extra" keys in gconf, exactly these:
I have just downloaded the Screem text editor source from their website.I tried to aptitude it first, but it wasn't available in the repos. So I thought maybe building from the script would be the solution. The problem is, this package doesn't build with the usual configure, make and make install commands.Well ./configure works. It checks the system and dependencies.
What's a simple way of downloading and installing LIVES video editing software on Ubuntu 11.04? I just simply can't understand the technical stuff on the website about pps and all that. Is there a simple apt-get install script or something similar?
I have a web cam made by a company called trust. This is the first time I am trying to install a web cam on Debian or Linux as a matter of fact. I am running Squeeze. After doing some google search it seems a lot people are using a program called "gspca". I downloaded it but I came here to see if someone has a better idea on how to have a web cam working.
Is a firewall necessary on ubuntu? I've never thought about it until now. Do I need one? If so whats a good firewall to install? As you can tell im not too knowledgeable on this subject. I know (i think) linux has a built in firewall called iptables but ive never used it or looked into it.
I'm trying to install Python and a LaTeX editor and can't really get either to work out. For texlive, I used 'sudo apt-get texlive-full', which didn't generate any errors, but I now can't seem to open the application. For Python, I used 'sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install python2.6' which generated the error "Unable to lock directory /var/cache/apt/archives." I tried to remove a lock file that I read about on another post and open up SPM, but the error persisted.
What program is good to install to partition my PC after installation (I installed without a partition). Also, any quick tips in partitioning? Lastly, I have an old Ubuntu installed together w/XP on another PC. I want to install Xubuntu to replace the old Ubuntu, using the same partition. Is that possible?
i am trying to install nedit editor on my account on a web hosting server. I have downloaded the nedit tar file from Index of /ftp/v5_5/executables and ran the command tar -zcvf nedit-5.5-Linux-x86.tar. The files have been unzipped successfully. In the README file it is asking for to do a make to complete the installation.
From this point on i am lost and not sure i to do the rest. I know that i need to do a make, but running just make requires a target. I am not sure what should be my target to finish the installation of nedit. Here is a list of files as a result of un-tarring my tar file:
I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 and did not find any change how can I know that the new Ubuntu 10.10 is installed. Also I want to know the good site from where I cam download Themes and install them.
I have a lot of RAR files and ISO. Is there a program like Winrar which could open them in Linux? Cause now it only opens zip files . Also I would like to know what the best package manager is (I mean the easiest -used to use the Software Manager in Mint 9 Xfce). At last I would like to know if there is a good program to make disk images to reset the system.
I tried to use abiword and when I pasted it, all the html and css code was gone. Is this for continutiy between posts or is it for security; the web page does not want individuals to be able to hack the site

I plan to design a general framework for structural optimization.I already have a pre-processor module that I can call in batch mode, a Finite Elements Solver, and a heuristic non gradient based optimizer that can process the outputs of the solver, so as to adjust some input variables in the pre-processing phase ( geometry and topological definitions of my structure ).
I would like to parse the huge ammout of data that is released by the solver ( an ascii text file) to filter out some reauired results in some specific points ( maximum allowable deflections or stresses within my structure ) since it is this infoemation that will be fed to the optimizer engine so as to feedback on the quality of the changes made in the topological definition. The only way to do this in batch mode is with awk, or with sed..
