if anyone of you have shifted using Paid Red Hat Linux with CentOS, and what are your experiences of moving from Paid Linux to Unpaid Linux CenOS. When do you suggest a person use Paid Linux and when to use Unpaid Linux?
View 1 Replies View RelatedThe install actually seemed to go pretty smoothlyIt's a dell pentium4 with 128mbyes it installed textuallyI start the gui with 'startx'but the question I have is for the more experienced CentOS people.when I login as rootI am trying to figure out how to get my machine onto the internet.I had figured the OS would have NO problem with a Linksys 10/100 pci cardsince the OS has the latest drivers and all.The system reports the NIC as a "ADMtek NC100 ethernet" card (eth0)it also reports that the status is "ok"Now, I've seen the NIC when it's plugged into a hub (during the O/S install)and it DOES make the hub's light flicker when it tries to "talk" to it.but when I have it plugged into my Cable Modem (for internet) it's not doing anything.
During the install I SAW the NIC making the hub lights flicker... so I know the interface WAS doing "something".but nowwhen I go into the gui and I try the NetWork Admin , and I try to "activate" the card.Nothing.Am I NOT doing something that I SHOULD be doing?fconfig? (at the command line?) ifup? I would have thought I'd "activate" it with the gui ok...I'll keep poking around.I'm just a little surprised is all. Ubuntu 8.1 had no problem "discovering" and using a wireless Linksys cardTHIS operating system is even newer
What options should I use when I'm using the sort command to sort the top 5 CPU processes (ps -eo user, pid, ppid,%cpu,%mem, fname | sort ??? | head -5) showing max to min usage?
View 2 Replies View RelatedWe switched from unix to linux and we have an old report that extracted data from a database, output to an ascii file and then sorted the results in the file based on different arguments. The report now blows up when it runs, and I can only guess it is because the options for sort on linux differ slightly from unix. For example, here is one of the commands issued from within the report app that ran on the old unix box:
if sort-sequence = "descending" then
'sort -t~" -f +3.0f -4.0 +5.0r -6.0 -f '
else
'sort -t~" +3.0f -4.0 +1.0f -2.0 -f'
I will eventually rewrite the report to store the data in a local table, but I can simply adjust the options to suit the requirments of linux. Basically, I need to know if this can be a quick fix for the short term.

The GNU sort text utility features a non-standard -R option to randomize input lines (presumably by sorting on a hash).
OSX sort does not have this extension. Is there similar functionality available in another text filter?

But sometimes I want to sort by case-sensitive, so the upper-case letters come first, then lower-case letter.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI've been using Linux Mint happily for a while until a couple of days ago it just died. Froze up, nothing I could do would free it up other than a hard reset. So, I tried to install it again from a Live CD, but my laptop won't even boot into Live mode. It just sits there, saying 'Loading....'. which it frankly isn't. I suspect a major hardware fault has occurred, but have no idea what. Any ideas?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI sorted a large mailing list and the result is in almost sorted order, but not quite. The sort was invoked in the default manner, just "sort".See (below) a segment of the output file.(Note: the actual files have a street address following each name.I have omitted the addresses to avoid complaints about disclosing personal information on-line.) I expect all people named KATZ to be grouped together, but they aren't. This phenomenon occurs elsewhere in the output file, so it has nothing to do with surnames beginning with the character string KATZ.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have about 1000 text files and I need to view each, and move it to a folder if it's the correct one. I can only do basic sorting by length/size, and I can't grep because the text is random. How can I do this besides manually openiing + saving each in gedit.I'm on Ubuntu Linux.I've already done all the sorting I can based on ize, wordcount, greps, date, etc. This is what's left over. I'm trying to find an easy way to view +save/ignore the rest.
