Ubuntu :: Graphical Program Over X Without Installing Any Sort Of GUI?
Feb 15, 2011I have a really old Dell computer (Dell PowerEdge 1300) that I am wanting to use as a small server (samba file server and apt-cacher-ng). I installed Ubuntu server and then did "sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends ubuntu-desktop" which was a bad idea because it killed the performance.So here is my question.Ive read you can split the X client and server. Would that let me run a graphical program (like Synaptic) over X without installing any sort of GUI on the Dell?If that is the case, how would I go about doing so?If I would still have to install a GUI on the Dell, what are other options since the on-board display adapter seems to struggle with graphics?

Apple :: Mac Partition Won't Boot After Installing Ubuntu 10.4 / Sort It?
Aug 30, 2010So I repartitioned my mac hard drive using the disk utility in my mac os. Shrink the mac HD and created a new partition for ubuntu. I installed Ubuntu and everything works fine and it was be able to boot back into mac yesterday. However, this morning, when I was holding down the ALT key at startup trying to go into my mac, no boot options come up, it automatically goes into the ubuntu boot option (grub 2) and i tried to go into the mac osx on sda2 from grub2 but it'll take a very long time and nothing boots up. It just says 'waiting for root devices'. Do I need to insert the mac cd and try to repair the system? All my files and partition are still there so I think its not completely gone.
ps. I have the newest macbook version (6.1?)

I want to install RHEL 5 on it, but media didn't boot in graphic mode,when i was completing the installation steps( all in text mode) at the end I see only a command line ( username logine)
I tried other distributions and other RHEL versions that I have ( for checking my laptop) and the result become fallow in brief:
RHEL 5.3: only boot in text mode
RHEL 5.5: only boot in text mode
fedora 8: boot and install in graphic mode
fedora 8:doesn't boot
fedora 10: boot and install in graphic
oracle red hat enterprise 4.4:boot and install in graphic mode( but I don't like this)
I need only RHEL 5 distribution on my laptop and I check the others for checking my laptop, please answer in simple manner,I'm not an advanced user

May 29, 2011I have run into the following problem, after I installed the proprietary AMD/ATI driver for my videocard I've been unable to wake up my laptop after suspend to RAM, it suspends ok (I guess?) but when I try to wake it up the screen doesn't turn on so I have to manually shut down the laptop.
before installing the proprietary driver, it worked ok
the videocard is a Radeon HD 3200, and the processor is an AMD Turion X2 Mobile

Mar 31, 2010Having a problem with my system hanging after updating Fedora 12. Here are my system specs:
Gigabyte MA770-UD3 motherboard
AMD Phenom 9950 Quad Core
6 gig Corsair DDR 800
1 x 160 gig SATA (OS)
1 x 500 gig SATA (data)
I have my system configured for dual boot with Windows 7. After installing F12, I can reboot with no problem. However, after I install the kmod-nvidia drivers, my system hangs on reboot. If I press any key on the keyboard, it will start to load, the freeze until I press a key again. I have tried both Fedora 12 x64 and i386 with the same results. Here are the steps that I took to install the kmod-nvidia drivers code...
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong?

May 4, 2010We switched from unix to linux and we have an old report that extracted data from a database, output to an ascii file and then sorted the results in the file based on different arguments. The report now blows up when it runs,and I can only guess it is because the options for sort on linux differ slightly from unix.For example, here is one of the commands issued from within the report app that ran on the old unix box:
if sort-sequence = "descending" then
'sort -t~" -f +3.0f -4.0 +5.0r -6.0 -f '
else
'sort -t~" +3.0f -4.0 +1.0f -2.0 -f'
I will eventually rewrite the report to store the data in a local table, but I can simply adjust the options to suit the requirments of linux. Basically, I need to know if this can be a quick fix for the short term.

Mar 12, 2010I've been using Linux Mint happily for a while until a couple of days ago it just died. Froze up, nothing I could do would free it up other than a hard reset. So, I tried to install it again from a Live CD, but my laptop won't even boot into Live mode. It just sits there, saying 'Loading....'. which it frankly isn't. I suspect a major hardware fault has occurred, but have no idea what. Any ideas?

I expect all people named KATZ to be grouped together, but they aren't. This phenomenon occurs elsewhere in the output file, so it has nothing to do with surnames beginning with the character string KATZ.
