General :: Autoremove Deleted Most Of Software Including Desktop On Debian?

Jun 19, 2010

I recently installed virtual box on debian and after it had finished my terminal informed me that I could remove some "unnecessary" software by use of sudo apt-get autoremove. When I did this, some of the icons on the desktop changed and all of the icons in the drop down menu on the bar at the top of the screen also changed to ordinary folder symbols. The theme that I was using also went away. I restarted the computer and it booted back into a shell prompt with no GUI. I tried to get back to the GUI using alt+f7 but it didn't seem to exist

Of course if I use sudo apt-get autoremove will remove all the mentioned packages including Freemat.

When using apt-get i tried apt-get autoremove and the result was that so many packages were removed for eg. nautilus, gnome-games, gnome-background etc. Then i tried to stop the process in between and installed the packages again (with apt-get install). Now after rebooting i am getting only the desktop without any icons and no commands are working. I can still go to single user mode. How can i get my desktop with all functions.

Debian :: Autoremove After Upgrade To Stretch

Jan 31, 2016

I recently upgraded my Debian box from Jessie to Stretch. After this, apt informed me that I should issue "apt-get autoremove," however the package list to be effected was large and contained some important packages (xorg being just one example). Most of the packages are qt4 related, and I at first assumed qt5 equivalents had replaced them, but seeing network-manager and xorg in the list made me pause.

Debian Configuration :: Apt-get Autoremove - Sound Keys Not Working

Apr 20, 2010

apt-get suggetsed I should remove some packages I was no longer using. I've read the threads that explain this, but unfortunately I did that just now, not when I actually ran the damn command. I must say, however, that there were lots of things I wasn't actually using, so it was useful in a way. But there is a problem:

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 and to get my sound keys working (the mute, volume up and volume down keys) I had to go to Settings-->Regional & Accessibility-->Keyboard Layout and there in Keyboard model I chose the option Dell Laptop/Notebook Inspiron 6xxx/8xxx. I know that's not exactly my model, but that made my sound keys work fine. Well, since I did the autoremove thing, that stopped working. I haven't got a clue what library was being used to get the sound keys working.

Debian :: Apt-get Autoremove, Blind Trust, And Semi-essential Packages?

Sep 7, 2011

I've been using Debian for around ~3 months now, though before that a certain derivative thereof since the start of the year.Long story short is that I was installing packages, as you do, when apt-get prompted that I run apt-get autoremove, as it does. So, trusting the computer, I do, not bothering to read the chunk of packages that it recommends to remove. Life goes on, until a reboot reveals that there are issues.Short story shorter, a quick cat /var/log/dpkg.log | grep remove spits out the following:

root@kubrick:~# cat /var/log/dpkg.log | grep remove
2011-09-05 22:04:09 startup packages remove
2011-09-05 22:04:09 remove gnome-user-share 2.30.1-1 2.30.1-1

If I use 'apt-get autoremove', of course, I lose almost everything in my GNOME desktop. Why apt tells me those packages are no longer required? It's ok or something is broken in my system? Oct 22, 2015

I am new and recently almost one month back installed debian linux stable 8.2 came from windows. Today I upgrade my debian stable 8.2 to testing and everything works fine. Just one thing is that I checked kernel and find :

uname -r

4.2.0-1-amd64

dpkg --list | grep linux-image

ii linux-image-3.16.0-4-amd64 3.16.7-ckt11-1+deb8u5 amd64 Linux 3.16 for 64-bit PCs

I am first time removing old kernel so cant take risk from searching the solution from google so come here, what and how to remove that includes everything like kernel image and other old kernel files not needed.

One more thing I just realised and saw on details in settings gnome that

Base : Debian GNU/Linux stretch/sid 64-bit

Ubuntu :: Prevent Desktop Icons From Being Deleted?

Feb 5, 2010

I'm setting up an Ubuntu Computer Lab at my kids' school, and am trying to find a way to lock certain icons to the desktop. For example, I need each user to have Firefox on the desktop, and not be able to delete it. I've tried doing a chown on the Firefox shortcut and changing ownership to root, or to myself, but the student account can still just delete it with no problems. I've also tried using Sabayon, and while it does bring the shortcut back at each logon, it's not "Marked as Trusted" which is an annoying constant popup. How can I ensure that when logged on, each user will have a Firefox shortcut, along with a couple other mandatory ones? Some logon script maybe?

Debian Configuration :: Courier Including SSL - No Shared Cipher After Upgrade To Jessie

Feb 26, 2016

I had a pretty much standard installation according to some tutorial (I don't remember, which one) for courier, including ssl. After upgrading from Wheezy (7) to Jessie (8) everything continued working fine, excep ssl connections to pop or imap.

In the log I get this error message while connecting to imapd-ssl:

Code: Select allFeb 26 20:16:22 mx imapd-ssl: couriertls: connect: error:1408A0C1:SSL routines:SSL3_GET_CLIENT_HELLO:no shared cipher

First I thought there got some chiphers removed from default configuration. But even when I try to allow all protocols and all ciphers:

Code: Select allTLS_PROTOCOL="SSL23"
TLS_CIPHER_LIST="ALL"

And then test via s_client:

Code: Select all# openssl s_client -connect 127.0.0.1:993 -cipher ALL
CONNECTED(00000003)
3073349308:error:14077410:SSL routines:SSL23_GET_SERVER_HELLO:sslv3 alert handshake failure:s23_clnt.c:770:

---
no peer certificate available

No client certificate CA names sent
---
SSL handshake has read 7 bytes and written 341 bytes
---
New, (NONE), Cipher is (NONE)
Secure Renegotiation IS NOT supported
Compression: NONE
Expansion: NONE
---

TLS over STARTTLS is also not working and does not invoke a log-entry. So I want to solve the ssl-problem first. I guess the STARTTLS-problem is automatically solved then.

My update procedure was:

Editing /etc/apt/sources.listapt-get updateapt-get upgradeapt-get dist-upgradeKeep all configuration files regarding courier.

Ubuntu :: Desktop Folder Gets Deleted On Logout Or Login

Mar 18, 2011

Ubuntu 10.04. Also have Kubuntu desktop installed. Usually use Ubuntu. Home folder shows as the desktop. Checked settings for Nautilus, Home_folder_is_Desktop is NOT checked. ~/Desktop folder does not exist. .config/user-dirs.dir desktop line is set to XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/"

So, created the ~/Desktop folder. Changed the line in user-dirs.dir to read XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/Desktop". Log out. Log back in. Result:

Home folder shows as the desktop. Checked settings for Nautilus, Home_folder_is_Desktop is NOT checked. ~/Desktop folder does not exist. .config/user-dirs.dir desktop line is set to XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/"

Logged into the KDE desktop. It complains that the ~/Desktop folder does not exist. Shows nothing on the desktop. Create the ~/Desktop folder. Set KDE to use the ~/Desktop folder. Check .config/user-dirs.dir and make sure that the Home folder shows as the desktop. Checked settings for Nautilus, Home_folder_is_Desktop is NOT checked. ~/Desktop folder does not exist. .config/user-dirs.dir desktop line is set to XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/Desktop" line is in. Everything is set. Log out.

Log in to Ubuntu. Result:
Home folder shows as the desktop. Checked settings for Nautilus, Home_folder_is_Desktop is NOT checked. ~/Desktop folder does not exist. .config/user-dirs.dir desktop line is set to XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/"

This problem showed up on two computers after a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 followed by an install of the Kubuntu desktop. Might as well install Kubuntu desktop because some of the utilities I like to use (Kate, Krusader, etc) require that major parts of it be installed anyway. What appears to be happening is that the user-dirs.dir folder is getting ignored and is overwritten either on logout or login and the ~/Desktop folder is being deleted.

I can run it using Ctrl+Alt+F2, but it refuses to open any windows or run any programs. Most commands give me some form of 'cannot open display.' I can't minimize windows without losing them so my workspace is a mess, I can't run nautilus as root so I can't access Synaptic, and the list basically goes on and on.
