View 3 Replies View RelatedI am about to write a script to manage daily backup on a USB HDD. The server that holds the data works 24 hours a day and therefor, is seldom rebooted. I have 2 options :
OPT 1 : I mount the usb drive once and for all, and copy the data to it when I need to (twice a day, no more) and never unmount it. Except when the server is rebooted of course.
and OPT 2 : I mount the drive, copy the data and unmount it ASAP twice a day when the time has come to backup the data.
I'm trying to find out how to change the time at which daily events run per Anacron. Has anyone done that before?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've tried to google but not much luck. What I would like to do is have anumber of folders on my desktop and their contents, replicated/duplicated into another folder on the same PC in real time. So for example, if I were to change an OpenOffice document in a specific folder on my Desktop it would be replicated/duplicated in real time. If I had three folders on my Desktop A, B and C they would also appear/be backed up (in real time) in a folder called /home/backup. Can this be done?

View 2 Replies View RelatedAs root, I use crontab to run mirrordir to backup directories. Everything gets copied over properly, but owner information isn't preserved and root is the owner of all the backed up files. I can deal with that, but crontab reports tons and tons of chown/chgrp errors for mirrordir every time I do back ups--which is every day--and the multiple emails to root of thousands of chown/chgrp errors is very annoying. The error is "Operation not permitted," but that doesn't make sense to me because the job runs as root (right?) and clearly the job is permitted to create the backup files, so why would it fail to chown and chgrp?
I've had the exact same setup on another server for years, and crontab has always run mirrordir without error. Any suggestions how to clear the errors on my new server?
What is the best Linux Mint backup tool that is most like Time Machine (that ships on Macs)?
The one thing that I want it to have similar to Time Machine is that it only backs up files that have been changed, therefore making for faster backups.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for a backup solution for multiple web applications that exist in code (flat files) and an associated mysql database. I'd like the code backups to be grouped with the DB backups by name/location. I'd also like redundancy, with backups going to a local drive and a remote network drive.I'm just about done writing a bash script that does a combination of tar/gz and mysqldump per application. Once it's done, I'll throw it in a cron job, and enable/disable sites by name in the script. Before I go further down this path, does anyone recommend a solid package that already exists?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI downloaded the ubuntu server (command line only) iso and set up a server on a spare computer. The only partition is ubuntu. LAMP server installed, and runs. Its plugged into my home network and the router assigns it a DMZ. I use ptty and that allows me to connect the server from my Windows PC. I installed samba and that works, I set up the server as Z: to my windows PC, and I can now use Filezilla FTP to move gigs of files over from my windows PC to the ubuntu server. I have to log in to activate the connection to Z: but it works.
Problem is getting a database connection from my windows PC (client) to my ubuntu server. Server is running a MySQL server and an Apache Derby server but both give connection:refused every time I try to connect with a java app, or with ij from my client. I tried MySQL Workbench, as that has a GUI, that doesnt connect to MySQL either. Every time I start my server I have to add lots of jar files to the CLASSPATH just to get the Derby server running. The Derby client connection on my client PC is also properly set up with PATH and CLASSPATH etc etc all configured and tested. But the server refuses every attempt to connect even though it tells you the Derby server is up and runnign as listening on port 1527!!!
What I want is a script or app that will "unlock" my server so I can actually do something with it instead of constantly trying new settings and packages in the vain hope it will then actually 'serve'. I am missing something here. There is nothing of value on this server that cannot be 'exposed' to the internet, so I'd be happy to turn off all the security just so the damn thing allowed connections...!
