Slackware :: Which Desktop Environment Is Optimized For Work

Feb 15, 2011

I am currently on the job of customizing my laptops for different usage areas. I am very new to Linux (~2-3 weeks) and have not yet developed a solid understanding of the purpose of the different desktop environments. This is why I came to you. I assume most DE's can perform the same tasks as any other DE if you tweak stuff enough, but I am currently lost in this wilderness, and would love to hear the strengths and weaknesses for the different DE's so I can settle for something and get good at it... (I'm going to mainly use it for programming, if that's any vital information.

Slackware :: Build A Complete Optimized Using Sbopkg?

Mar 27, 2011

Just a question out of curiosity: Is there a build-queue that can be used with sbopkg to build a complete Slackware repository from scratch?Just asking, because the 32 bit version of Slackware is suited to run on older computers by compiling for i486 architecture. I want to know if it is possible to rebuild the complete repository with optimizations for newer architectures, so that the programs can make use of the features of newer processors, like MMX, SSE and so on.

Slackware :: Make A Decision On Which Desktop Environment To Use?

Jun 26, 2011

i've been trying to make a decision on which desktop environment to use and i've been using a few over the past week to try to decide which one. I liked gnome 2.x previously but have been really turned off it since it's not supported by Slack and 2.x is no longer even supported by gnome. I tried xfce, since it's gtk2 app as well and i really wanted to like it, i did; but there is just some things that make me wish i was using gnome. Anyways, i was wondering which third party gnome would be best suited for me. I'm using Slackware 13.37 and i want gnome 2.x, not 3.

Pat's old documentation recommended,
http://gsb.sf.net
http://gware.sf.net

and i checked out them sights, but the last updates seemed to have been years ago.

Slackware :: 13.37 KDE Desktop Effects Only Work For Root?

Apr 29, 2011

I just got Slackware 13.37 up and running and all is well except for the KDE Desktop Effects. If I log in as root, they're enabled and work fine. However, when I log in as a user they are disabled and the option to enable them is greyed out.Other OpenGL programs run fine as a user, such as the glxgears test program and OpenGL screensavers.ATI card running this driver:It must be some kind of permission issue but I'm not really sure where to look.

Debian Installation :: No Desktop Environment In CD 1?

Aug 12, 2015

I'm sure you will laugh at me, however I do have to ask : is there a desktop environment at all in Jessie installation CD 1 , I mean the one I've downloaded here [URL].... , and to be precise this one [URL].... .

I've installed it in a virtualbox thinking that I'd see a Gnome desktop (assuming it is the default one and seeing that nothing was specified in the CD name), but there is no graphical environment at all, it boots to a console: dpkg -l finds no desktop components and there is no default display manager in /etc/X11 (of course startx only gets me another terminal, probably xterm) .

It should not be a virtualbox issue because the LXDE version there runs OK, I'm just a bit puzzled that no desktop environment at all is apparently installed even if I'm positive that I've checked that option during the installation: I've installed this CD without a network connection, but nevertheless, if the installer says "install a desktop environment" that's what I'm expecting to find...

I don't remember such an issue with Wheezy, in fact I only used CD 1 and there was indeed a Gnome desktop after installation - it's not a big deal, I'd just like to know if this is normal.

Ubuntu :: Way To Change The Desktop Environment ?

Jan 12, 2010

Now I know this is an Ubuntu forum, but my question is really for Linux distros in general. An obvious newbie to linux, I was just wondering if I could change the default desktop environment that comes with distros: for example Ubuntu comes with GNOME. There is a way to change that to something like, for example, xfce or Openbox right? Or are these environments set for each distro?

Ubuntu :: Installing Nothing But Another Desktop Environment?

I'm running a regular installation of Ubuntu 10.10 with Gnome.I would like to try LXDE and other desktop environment,BUT without installing the entire Lubuntu.Last time I tried something like that,I installed the kubuntu-desktop package which came with a ton of software I didn't want.I couldn't even remove it easily, so I followed a tutorial which made me remove some of the software I had BEFORE messing with KDE.So what I'm asking is simple-is there a standalone package that installs nothing but another desktop environment? I also want to be able to remove it with a simple apt-get remove.

Ubuntu Installation :: Optimized Install Options For SSD?

Finally took the plunge and got myself an OCZ 32GB SSD for my main desktop. I'm getting some mixed info on the 'best' (and I know thats a personal option in the end) configuration for partitions, ect..

Here are my specs:

AMD Phenom x4
4GB 800MHz Ram
nVidia geForce 9500w/512MB

[code]....

but as for the partitions such as /var and the others, I'm not sure what the best options would be to get the best bang for my buck. Also, is a swap file required anymore, will I see an appreciable different in performance if I just did not use one? If I need one, should it be on the SSD or one of the other drives?
