Hardware :: Accessing External HardDrive With USB 3.0

Jan 26, 2011

I've a new USB 3.0 Hub card and plugged it into pcie1x. The chipset on this controller is a NEC uPD720200. I attached a HD to it but it wasn't recognized (but Windows does!).

I'm runnig archlinux (all updates) which shows the card/harddrive as (lsusb) Bus 008 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub fdisk doesn't show the device.

How to access the HD?

Ubuntu :: External Harddrive Not Booting / Prevent This From Happening?

Mar 21, 2010

I installed Ubuntu on a portable harddrive so that I can use it independently of my computer (when I visit my parents or my g/f). I performed the installation using a bootable Ubuntu thumbdrive, everything went fine but when I unplugged the thumbdrive and rebooted I got a kernel panic. I was able to boot into Ubuntu on my external drive once (I think it might have been due to reordering boot order in BIOS). My guess is that the kernel panic occurs due to the drive letter changing (sdb -> sdc) depending on which external devices are plugged in, but I'm not sure how to make sure that's the case. And if it is, how would I prevent this from happening?

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 External Encrypted Harddrive Not Correctly Mounted?

Nov 14, 2009

i have an external harddrive which i encrypted scince opensuse 10.2 with luks. Now i installed opensuse 11.2 its impossible to me to mount this drive correctly.

the harddrive was recocnized in my former opensuse 11.0 correctly as luks encrypted and during installation yast installed the kernel module and encrypted the harddrive so that i regulay could mount it on boot by giving the password for that harddrive. Scince opensuse 11.2 however yast thinks this is an dmcrypted partitoon and tries to unlock the harddrive using dmcrypt which of course fails.

does somebody know how i can encrypt and mount the externeal drive automaticly?

i have made a backup of /etc before i made a new installation of opensuse 11.2. is the possible to use the old fstab entries for that after installing luks?

Fedora Hardware :: External Harddrive Not Spinning Down At Suspend / Unavailable After Resume?

Nov 20, 2010

First of all I have to say I love Fedora, just switched from openSuSE after the system was kinda sluggish the last 2 or 3 versions. But one thing I always liked was the fact that when the system went into suspend my external harddrive spun down and after resuming it spun up again as soon as I tried to access a file. Now in Fedora the harddrive continues spinning and is unavailable after resuming. There is nothing about the harddrive in dmesg, not during suspending and not even when i unplug it after resuming.

Networking :: Accessing External SSH From A PC With Only Port 80 Access

Dec 23, 2010

I work for a company who has a really closed proxy configuration, and I think that only the port 80 is opened, but with a lot of blocked sites.

I guess that for other cases, like bank sites and others, they opened the 443 port too. But other ports are all closed.

I set up a linux server at home, and I need to access it with SSH. However, I can't access my server directly by its IP number,

I don't know why, but probably it's because some rule in the company's firewall or proxy, right? What I did to trick this was create an account on NO-IP.org, which provides me with a DNS to my host. In this moment, my "network" is something like this:

When I try to connect (by my work PC) with "telnet xxxxx.no-ip.org 80", or with Putty, I get a blank screen, no errors, no nothing.

But when I try to do this on another PC, on another network without proxies, I'm successfull. So I really think that is my company proxy thats blocking this way, am I correct?

So I think that the solution for my problem is to create a tunnel, to transport my SSH connection over an HTTP, through the Port 80.

But is there a way to do this?

It would be something like this:

Is that correct?

If so, how could I do this?

I'm trying for a week now, with programs like http-tunnel, proxy-tunnel, and others. But nothing until now.

So, any ideias how could I could communicate my SSH client at work over a HTTP (port 80) connection, over NO-IP, my modem, my server, HTTP to SSH, and finally my SSH server?

Ubuntu :: Accessing Gnome-keyring From Cron ?

Jan 19, 2011

A few days ago, I decided to setup my emailing applications (I use mutt, with offlineimap, imapfilter, and msmtp) to use gnome-keyring rather than have my email passwords stored in plain text inside these application's respective configuration files.

[1].I am successfully able to run them from the command line myself, but looking up the passwords from gnome-keyring fails when running from cron.

I came across a person calling svn with a cron job and authenticating via gnome-keyring

[2]. I've tried to adapt his solution, but I don't think I'm doing it right. I've made a comment on the blog author's post, but am still waiting to hear back.

Does anyone know how I'm supposed to incorporate the bash function from that author's post to give cron the correct environmental variables?

Software :: Gnome Very Slow And Accessing HDD Constantly

Jul 18, 2010

I just got a fresh Debian squeeze install done on an older laptop. I used a lenny CD to get the machine running and it died half way through the installation. I fixed it and got gnome to run just fine as root. After that, I upgraded to squeeze and now the machine runs too slow to do anything with when gnome starts. It just sits with the HDD access flickering constantly. I let it sit for a few hours like this before I pulled the plug. It works just fine if I run in terminal only mode. Not sure what is wrong. Also, I can only seem to log in as root. My personal account says bad user name or password. I don't know why. Don't know if they are related. Any ideas what might be wrong? I can't even get a terminal going with X running to use top, so I can't even look at what is running.
