General :: Windows 7 - Backup Folders To External SFTP Server With Shadow Copy

Mar 1, 2010

I have an account in university on Linux machine with 10TB of free space accessible via SFTP. I would like to backup my Windows 7 x64 laptop to university. Currently I am using rsync+cygwin, but backup is pretty slow (without shadow copy) and I hate console window appearing every day on my screen when I login.

So I am looking for something like Windows Backup but with support for SFTP. Combination of tools will work too.

General :: Connect To An SFTP Server From A Windows Machine To A SFTP Server Using A DSA Key?

Jul 24, 2011

As a Windows user, I generated a pair of DSA keys from CoreFTP Lite and sent it to a third party that runs an SFTP server. They told me that a valid DSA key needs to have ssh-dsa at the start and the username@systemname at the end. CoreFTP generated neither the ssh-dsa header nor the username@systemname footer. I tried with WinSCP and it didn't generate them either. Is there a difference between how SFTP works between Windows and Linux? If I put a useraccount@systemname at the end of the text will it work? How would the Linux system validate that my system is called "systemname"? If it can't validate, what is the purpose of adding it?

Ubuntu :: Equivalent To Windows Shadow Copy?

Mar 29, 2011

Here at work we've made very good use of Server 2003's Shadow Copy service, which lets me restore users' files quickly and easily using the Previous Versions software--yet takes minimal resources and storage space on the server. I've also heard that the service may be available to users in Windows 7. Is there an equivalent of this in Ubuntu? Something I could set up that would snapshot files on my hard drive every so often, and let me recover deleted files or earlier versions of files?

Server :: SFTP - Folders Become World Writable?

Jan 21, 2011

My website, IsleDiscount.com, is hosted on a virtual server with pair.com. Pair.com offers only one SFTP account on regular shared server and to set up mutltiple SFTP accounts, Pair.com moved me to a virtual server (VQS1), which I believe is not a shared server solution, but Pair representatives were able to create multiple SFTP accounts on this VQS server.

However, when I asked the representative to restrict access of this additional SFTP accounts to a sub-folder, I got the following warning email: confirm you understand this will make your entire web directory world-writeable. This will increase the chances of a security attack. If you do understand this, you can go ahead and execute the command yourself. The command below will accomplish both commands in one.

Ubuntu Servers :: Auto Copy Folders To Windows And Vice Versa?

Apr 6, 2010

1. I need a script(like a scheduled cron job) which should perform Automatic copy (backup) of a directory from ubuntu server to windows and vice versa....

i tried every thing like samba mounting,ftp,etc..with samba its possible to map the network drive of an ubuntu directory in windows..but if the ubuntu server is not available then i cant access the network share..

Exactly this situation is happening for me while backing up tmp directory of ubuntu server ...

so in this case i need a permanent backup of tmp directory of ubuntu server in windows rather than a network share.

2. Also any ideas or scripts regarding automatic ftp (while doing a backup) from ubuntu server to windows... which can easily solve the above issue...

Ubuntu Security :: Scanning External Windows Backup Drive?

Feb 15, 2011

I've been struggling with the problem of scanning an external drive that is used to store the backup from a Windows 7 machine. The Windows 7 machine was infected but the user continued to backup to the external drive. He has since formatted his machine and reinstalled Windows 7, but now he would like restore whatever he can from the backup on the external drive. I've been attempting to scan the external drive for viruses using ClamTK by connecting it to my laptop running Ubuntu 10.04, but it has not worked. There is supposed to be about 10 gigs of backed up data, but I haven't seen any. I don't know why it is not mounted.

General :: Copy One File To All Folders?

Apr 4, 2009

I am developing a Web-based application and have some folders that will generally reside outside of the Web accessible area of the server. However, since some people will not be able to store those folders outside of the "public_html" folder, I am looking to put a blank "index.php" inside of every folder within that section of the application. To make things easier, I would like to know if there might be a way to recursively copy one file into every folder in a certain location.

In other words, is there a command that might do something like:
Code:
> cp -R index.php /home/user/public_html/source-files/*
Basically, I want every directory inside of "source-files" to get a copy of "index.php". The directory hierarchy within "source-files" can go at least three or four levels deep, so the command would need to be recursive. I am looking for a command-line statement that I can type to perform this action.

Programming :: Correcting An SFTP Backup Gone Wrong?

Mar 23, 2010

I need a script that can undo a complete backed-up file system restructuring that took place after an upgrade to the latest version of SyncBackPro. Basically a windows machine running SyncBackPro runs a backup every morning to a SuSE 11.2 SFTP file server and after the monthly update of SyncBack I had some issues getting the existing profiles to run. Suffice it to say I did some tinkering and thought I reset the backup paths to their correct locale but the next day I found that the program took everything in the parent SFTP user directory on the SuSE server and did the backup in the main user directory.

Since the user directory is not the backup directory, SyncBackPro took all of the files in the normal user directories and moved them into versioned $SBV$ directories and inserted a unique 12-digit numerical value to the front of every file below ~/ in every directory (recursively). I found a program named krename to correct the renaming issue and it is still adding the ~3 million files to the rename structure (tests on smaller folders worked flawlessly) to correct the 100*********.'s that have been appended to the beginning of every file. My problem is that I need to take all files that have been moved into these $SBV$ directories and move them up one level to their original directory and then remove the $SBV$ directory after the move. I do have a little experience with bash/shell scripts as I have made and use them for extracting, timestamping and moving jobs that execute through TORQUE and G03 but fall far short of having a programming degree. Chemistry, now that's a different story...I have found another post which appears to move the files in a specified directory up one level but I need a solution that can search recursively for the $SBV$ folder and then move the files and delete the then empty $SBV$ folder. General :: Backup - Any Copy And Verify Command In Ubuntu?

Dec 5, 2010

I back up all my digital photos to a couple of places. I've been using the cp command, but--given the personal value--have started to wonder if there's a more reliable way. I'm no stranger to Linux, Bash, Perl, etc., so I could write something to copy and compare md5 hashes, but I was wondering if something already exists (reinvention, wheels and what-not).

Most of my googling for copy and (verify|valid|check|hash|confirm) turns up rsync. However, as far as I can tell, rsync only uses hashes to see if a file needs to be updated. It doesn't perform a hash comparison afterward. For this use, specifically, the files are binary and typically 8-10MB.

General :: Back Up Initial State Of External Backup Drive?

Jan 1, 2011

I've picked up an HP Simplesave external drive. It comes with some fancy software that is of no use to me because I don't use Windows. Like many current consumer-targeted backup drives, the backup software is actually contained on the drive itself. I'd like to save the drive's initial state so that I can restore it if I decide to sell it.

The backup box itself is somewhat customized: in addition to the hard drive device, it presents a CDROM-like device on /dev/sr0. I gather that the purpose of this cdrom device is to bootstrap via Windows autoplay the backup application which lives on the disk itself. I wouldn't suppose any guarantees about how it does this, so it seems important to preserve the exact state of the disk.

The drive is formatted with a single 500GB NTFS partition. My initial thought was to use dd to dump the disk (/dev/sdb) itself, but this proved impractical, as the resulting file was not sparse. This seemed to be because the NTFS empty space is not filled with zeroes, but with a repeating series of 16 bytes.

I tried gzipping the output of dd. This reduced to the file to a manageable size — the first 18GB was compressed to 81MB, versus 47MB to tarball the contents of the mounted filesystem — but it was very slow on my admittedly somewhat derelict Pentium M processor. The time to do that first 18GB was about 30 minutes.
