Dec 5, 2010I'm just wondering what the options are if one wants to try a 'newer' kernel and/or XServer version.
Either on an installed system or virtual machine (for e.g., Squeeze in VirtualBox).
On an installed system, on Debian Sqeeze (or Testing), if one wants to upgrade to 2.6.36 kernel and/or XServer 1.9, what are the options? I noticed that 1.9 is available in experimental so one has to enable and load the experimental package repository?
As for the kernel, I guess there's a few options? One includes installing the liquorix kernel? Best choice/alternative is compiling?
Ubuntu :: Xserver Died On Kernel Upgrade ?
Jul 14, 2011When booting to kernel 2.6.38-10 I get an error about it not being able to load the nvidia drivers/kernel module. 2.6.38-8 works fine. Actually I do not even get the error unless I run 'startx' but instead have to hunt through the logs for it.
I do not even get the usual low resolution mode, just the text terminal so this is an serious issue especially since grub no longer prompts at startup for alternate boot options. Probably the worst change in Ubuntu since it makes it much harder to recover from something like this.
I think it might be due to the GTX 460 card I have, I noticed other people have had the same issue in the past with this card.
Nvidia drivers installed from the kubuntu repository version 4.1.0 NVIDIA 270.41.06.
How do I fix the drivers, or alternately what is the change in the grub menu to change the defaulted booted kernel?

Dec 8, 2009The -162 kernel upgrade just released failed to boot in my x86-64 system. Additionally, both previous kernels failed in (probably) the same way. The progress icon proceeded all the way to its 'f' image, and then hung. I touched escape key, and found several disturbing messages among a dozen or so lines --
mdadm: No arrays found in config file or automatically. A dynamic linking error occurred: /lib64/multipath/libcheckdirectio.so: no such file or directory awk: cmd. line:1: fatal: cannot open file `/etc/inittab` for reading (Invalid Argument). Init: rcS post-stop process (807) terminated with status 2s. I got into rescue mode with my install disk, then looked for libcheckdirectio.so in /mnt/sysimage/lib64 but it was not there. Also, locate -d /mnt/sysimage/mlocate/mlocate.db/libcheckdirectio.so found nothing.
Ran chroot and executed the fakd diagnostic (which I had not seen before) and rebooted. Same problem - although now the screen is telling me SELinux is requiring a targeted policy relabel. My dual-boot-to-vista system has been erratic (requiring fsck several times, and confounding the Vista partition to require file checks), primarily since a large install of Eclipse and multiple plug-ins AFAICR.
Fedora X86/64bit :: No Sound From Pulseaudio , ALSA After 2.6.40 Kernel Upgrade / Get That?
Aug 2, 2011I just got the upgrade for the Linux Kernel version 2.6.40-4 on my Fedora 15 x86-64 box today, and the installation completed with no problems. However when I rebooted after doing the upgrade, I noticed that I had no sound. I use an ATI Radeon HD 4350 video card, and the opensource ATI driver, and use the HDMI audio from it for sound, since my monitor has a sound output jack on it. I've booted into the previous kernel (2.6.38.8-35), and sound works fine. I've tried with the new kernel in both KDE (my default desktop environment) and XFCE to get sound, and it does not work in either one. I've tried installing the VLC Phonon Backend instead of the GStreamer Backend, reinstalling Pulseaudio, reinstalling Alsa, modprobing the necessary modules needed for the card, checking all configurations with the available Pulseaudio tools (paprefs, pavumeter, pavucontrol), checked the volumes using alsamixer, and reinstalling the ALSA Pulseaudio plugin. After trying all of these, I can still get no sound out of any application, and I also noticed that Flash video plays at 2-3 times it's normal speed after the upgrade. Again, these problems do not occur on my previous kernel. Did I maybe overlook something, or can anyone else think of something I could try?

May 21, 2011I was about to do upgrade from 11.3 to 11.4.I was following the guide I found in opensuse's website. I was to the point where I had to disable all 11.3 repositories and add the 11.4 at that point I forgot to change my nvidia repository ( I have a g210m graphic card).
thus after the upgrade the X could not start at all. I think this was because Yast could not find the nvidia driver.
Using text mode YaSt2 I added the nvidia driver but after restart I can not see and X running. I receive an error message that the current kernel can not be loaded!!!
I also checked in command line if there is something like Sax2.. but I couldnot find anything.

Jun 12, 2009I downloaded 64-bit version of Fedora 11 and burned the iso on my dvd. When I rebooted the machine it booted up from the dvd but it showed an error message that kernel "image not found". And it stops there itself. Can someone show me some way except downloading the iso again?

Aug 7, 2011I've managed to get some sound through the system with kernel 2.6.40.1. I use multiple sound cards, I have problems with keeping the same order. I added in etc/modprobe.conf The list of sound devices, putting my D66 card as device 3, Rebooted and cat /proc/asound/cards showed all fore devices in the correct order. I got audio through one of the apps , and started to try and get another ,wsjt, to function.

Fedora :: Moving From 32bit To 64bit Kernel
Aug 12, 2011I have been running F14 as a 32-bit system (original m/b was 32-bit). Now the system is on a 64-bit dual-core processor board and I'd like to change from the 32-bit kernel to 64-bit. I downloaded a 64-bit kernel (kernel-2.6.35.6-45.fc14.86_64.rpm) and attempted to install it. It won't install and Package Installer returns a message of the sort that says this file "has incompatible architecture.
Valid architectures are ['athlon', 'i686', 'i586', 'i486'....]". My processor is an Athlon 64 x2. Is it possible to do what I want to do (I only want the kernel at the moment)? Is there some Fedora file I need to modify to allow the system to install the 64-bit kernel for this m/b? Do I need another file (or files) installed before I install the kernel?

Jun 19, 2009Firefox 3.5 Beta4 is completely unstable, once I open 2 or 3 tabs my entire laptop freezes. There is no control +alt combination that will take it off of it. I need to press the power button 10 seconds to reboot. I have done all updates. removed all add-ons from firefox. and still not working.I have never seen a linux machine completely lock up, even caps lock wont work
Any ideas? I saw that Firefox 3.5RC1 is out. HOw do I upgrade the 3.5Beta4?OR how do I downgrade to 3.0.11. I did download those versions, but I ran them out of their folders and not really upgraded the installed firefox.

With Ctl-F2 I can switch to console and login, so the system is running.
"ps -ef | grep Xsession" shows constant changing pid for Xsession, so I guess Xsession is continuously being restarted for some reason.

Oct 17, 2010I've downloaded 2.6.36-rc8 vanilla kernel, then I copied .config file from my current working kernel 2.6.32.21-168.fc12.x86_64, then I've configured, compiled and installed kernel like this:

The last command edits my grub.conf file and writes this:

I checked my .config and ACPI, and File Systems are built into kernel and not loaded as modules... And, I have LVM but my /boot partition isn't in it, so I don't HAVE to use initrd, right? How can I boot from a vanilla kernel without initrd ?

Feb 11, 2011I am unable to boot my Fedora 14 after last nights kernel update. When I start the boot up and hit F2 the system fails after outputting the line : Starting vservers of type 'default'. At some point the console displays an error message :

How do I restore my previous version? I know some people have suggested in the past - just modify the grub.conf but how? When I boot off the cd I only get access to the liveuser disk. I need to have access to my own /boot/grub/grub.conf file.

May 24, 2011My main systems runs Fedora 14 x64 with the latest updates (I can't check anymore, but I believe it has the .13.91 x64 kernel). Since this afternoon it became unsuable. First, Opera Browser crashed and the crash report app of the browser showed up. Clicking one of the options there resulted to X crash, if I understood what really went on. No input, mouse or kb, I couldn't go to tty etc. I had to do a hard reset. Next boot proceeded normally up to the point that GNOME desktop is fully loaded. ABRT began reporting numerous kernel oops.
Rebooted again (noticed that init.d fails, so hard reset again) and tried past two kernel versions, same results.
Yum crashes and so does everything. I tried to revert all recent updates with yum history, but yum crashed.
Last update was May 22, and it updated kmod-nvidia.

Clicking the "do not report this error now" option probably crashed X, because the screen went black and no input was possible (no mouse or keybord, so I couldn't go to tty either. Fedora X86/64bit :: Booting Updated 2.6.39.1 X86_64 Kernel
Jul 19, 2011In an attempt to ameliorate some other problems (lm_sensors, and loopback), and based on several forum entries, I decided to update the default f15 kernel (2.6.38.35) using kernel-2.6.39-1.fc16.x86_64.rpm from rawhide. It seemed to install without problems and when I rebooted it seemed to hang just before completing the boot process. The on screen boot messages ended with:
Started Display Manager
Started LSB: daemon for libvirt ........
Starting LSB: suspend/resume libvirt guests on shutdown/boot
[ 12 ......
about a dozen similar lines ending with
[25.030991 hci_cmd_timer: hci0 command tx timeout
then it apparently hangs
However, at that point I can log into to a console using Cntl-Alt-f2, so most, if not all, the crucial boot processes seem to have completed. There is an issue with the nVidia driver that I will deal with by modifying /boot/grub/grub.conf to re-enable nouveau, but I am stumped by what is causing the hang up. There is a certain amount of traffic regarding a similar problem with Ubuntu 11.04, but no solution other than it seems to be related to a BIOS bug (NFI)
what sub-system uses the "hci_cmd_timer" and why it might interfere with the boot process? Has anyone else run into a similar problem with f15?
Is there a better way to get an updated kernel in f15? I do want to keep all the Red Hat patches and back ports, so reluctant to build a kernel from scratch from upstream sources at kernel.org (and maybe just a bit apprehensive ;-})

Ubuntu Installation :: XServer Will Not Start After Upgrade 9.10 To 10.04?
May 2, 2010I upgraded to 10.04 and when trying to boot, the computer would hang at the splash screen. Going into recovery mode showed nothing in the log files. The Xorg and gdm logs were zero bytes but had the proper timestamp. I tried and tried, but could not get it to boot until I removed the nvidia-current package. Then the computer will boot, but the screen is partially corrupted with just a blue background. I can hit enter, then type my password and I can actually login, but I can't see a thing. I can cycle through the resolutions with Ctrl +, but the screen just still has a blue background and nothing else. Trying to boot in failsafe X mode gives the same screen. I tried putting the vesa driver in the xorg.conf, but no change.
I've tried the i915.modeset=0 boot option. I've tried the "xforcevesa" boot option, but nothing will give me a readable screen. As soon as I re-installed the nvidia-current package and ran nvidia-xconfigure, the problem came back and it hangs again.At this point, I'm stuck. I would settle for a plain VGA screen at this point, but I can't even seem to get that. I've read several posts here with similar problems and tried every solution put forth, I think, but have not found a solution.When the upgrade wanted to install the new /etc/default/grub, I kept my old one. I compared the two files at the time, but I didn't see anything new, but maybe I missed something. What new items if any does the upgrade put into /etc/default/grub?

Sep 28, 2010I run an old Toshiba Satellite M35x S114 Laptop with Debian Testing, it always runned smoothly - although it IS testing . Since the latest update to kernel 2.6.32 , the X server just freezes. The init goes all the way to gdm, and then a blank screen , no mouse pointer, no way to get out of this screen (not CTRL+ALT+BACSPACE not CTRL+ALT+F1 / F2 ... etc) just a hard reset.
I can boot to the older .30 kernel with absolutely no problem, gdm starts normally login successfull (as I am able to write this on the reffered machine and all).
Here comes the gory details:
