Fedora X86/64bit :: Is It Safe To Use Preupgrade For F12 Upgrade?
Nov 17, 2009
Just started to use Fedora and version 11 a couple of months ago. Is it safe to use preupgrade to do an upgrade to version 12 or is it better to do a fresh install?

I went to upgrade my daughters machine that was running F9 using preupgrade-cli after having issues with mirrors timing out it finally completed the first part with the notification install will start once you reboot. so I rebooted the machine and when it rebooted the grub menu came up with the F9 install selected but with an option for the F11 Upgrade I choose the upgrade and it starts and I see the installation screen with the stop watch and all of a sudden the comp restarts now at the grub menu again and there is no option for F11 upgrade so I boot into F9 try to run it again and it throws a bunch of errors about the rpm database... Encountering this before i run
rm -f /var/lib/rpm/__db*
rpm -vv --rebuilddb
yum clean all
but yum just blows errors now and if I run rpm -qa it returns nothing. Is there any recovering from this? or should I back up the home dirs and do a fresh install? this is the output of the rebuild
Code:
D: rebuilding database /var/lib/rpm into /var/lib/rpmrebuilddb.2367
D: creating directory /var/lib/rpmrebuilddb.2367
D: opening old database with dbapi 3

today i've tried to PreUpgrade from f12 to f14. In the past i preferred always begin with a fresh install, removing abruptly the preivious one with a CLEAN FRESH installation. (I think it's the best procedure). However i wanted exeperiment with this soution giving it one, two, three N+1 chances. So this is my first up-grade (or "double" upgrade).
My system is
CPU: INTEL P4
RAM 1024 MB
Video: NVidia
O.S. F12
Desktop: GNOME only (removed unused KDE app)

I plan on upgrading my F14 system to F15. Which is better? Using the preupgrade approach or using the F15 DVD and doing update from the DVD?

I'm trying to upgrade from Fedora 12 to Fedora 15 using preupgrade, but it seems to crash, I also tried going to Fedora 13 instead, but got similar errors. Here's the output to the command line. Let me know if there are logs anywhere that it would be helpful to provide. I replaced all the urls with "URL" to appease the forum's spam filters.
Code:
[yashabk@localhost ~]$ sudo preupgrade
Loaded plugins: blacklist, dellsysidplugin2, kernel-module, whiteout
No plugin match for: rpm-warm-cache
No plugin match for: remove-with-leaves
No plugin match for: presto

I'm trying to upgrade from F12 to F13 via preupgrade tool. The tool appears to be divided into 5 actions.
(1) Download release info
(2) Download installer images
(3) Determine wich packages to download
(4) Download packages
(5) Prepare and test upgrade
The tool has a tip too : "Tip: If you quit right now, your download will continue the next time you run this assistant." Well, after a long night, the tool runs until the almost finish of step 4. Then, the connection goes out, and i decided to continue in the following day. I just closed the tool and shutdown.
In the next day, i restarted preupgrade. But the application restarts from the very beginning of step 1.But, i think, the step 2 is very heavy. The file "install.img" is very very big. Re-download it is not desired.

I want to upgrade my F11 system to F13 using preupgrade-cli. Can I do that directly, or should I first upgrade to F12 and then to F13?
I have read elsewhere that Anaconda can skip one but not two versions, is that correct? If so, I assume that moving directly from F11 to F13 is OK, right?

I've run the preupgrade twice and both times I'm told that everything is perfect, all I have to do is reboot. When I reboot, nothing happens.
Theory: I'm using Fedora with Ubuntu and GRUB2. I never allowed Fedora to install GRUB. I'm guessing that the preupgrade would normally alter GRUB so that I could continue the upgrade process. However, GRUB isn't there.

The upgrade using yum and preupgrade fails
after reboot of the system
-> retrieve install image, ok
-> examine storage (or similar), ok
-> transfer install image to disk, ok
-> dependency check in install packages, ok
-> start installation process, ok
-> preparing to install
=> there was an error running yout transaction for the following reason(s): insufficient diskspace
you need more space on the following filesystems: 1089 M on unfortunately not more information displayed. only exit possible. Any experiences with this kind of behaviour? Many thanks for any feedback.

I have just attempted to upgrade my system from fedora 12 to fedora 13 using the preupgrade tool. It seemed to go through fine and eventually asked me to reboot, which I duly did. Does anyobe know if there is any way I can confirm that the upgrade was indeed performed successfully? When I use yum to install packages it is still installing fc12 packages, not fc13. Does this mean the upgrade did not work or do I simply need to manually update the repository conffiguration?

I`m having a problem with upgrading my Fedora 11 to either Fedora 12 or Fedora 13. When i start preupgrade, it lists all packages that need to be upgraded, but then it ends with the message that none of the mirrors can be found. I`m seeing the messages in the console, and indeed all the mirrors return "HTTP Error 404: Not Found". Any idea how to change this and eventually do an upgrade?. I also downloaded the Fedora 13 DVD, and tried to upgrade that way, but it never showed me the window which must give me the option to upgrade instead of doing a fresh install. The explanation in the official website clearly shows that this window exist, but after several tries with the DVD I did not get it.

I was wondering if there was an easy way to do a fresh install from an old Fedora without using any media ? Maybe there is a possibility to boot the netinstall.iso from grub ?Or tweaking preupgrade to do an installation instead of an upgrade..

Firefox 3.5 Beta4 is completely unstable, once I open 2 or 3 tabs my entire laptop freezes. There is no control +alt combination that will take it off of it. I need to press the power button 10 seconds to reboot. I have done all updates. removed all add-ons from firefox. and still not working.I have never seen a linux machine completely lock up, even caps lock wont work
Any ideas? I saw that Firefox 3.5RC1 is out. HOw do I upgrade the 3.5Beta4?OR how do I downgrade to 3.0.11. I did download those versions, but I ran them out of their folders and not really upgraded the installed firefox.

I just upgraded from F11 to F12 and get this error:
[drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0 GPU lockup - switching to software fbcon
With Ctl-F2 I can switch to console and login, so the system is running.
"ps -ef | grep Xsession" shows constant changing pid for Xsession, so I guess Xsession is continuously being restarted for some reason.

I've just upgraded from FC10 to FC11 (x86_64). Before the upgrade Firefox worked fine (it used a fair amount of ram but I typically have loads of tabs open :P ) but since the upgrade running Firefox maxes out my cpu. The whole system runs unusably slow if I have Firefox running now. I switched from KDE to LXDE and just ran Firefox to see if I could free up enough memory to save some tabs as bookmarks and close them but it's impossible (and not a permanent solution anyway). Konqueror runs blisteringly fast but with a cpu monitor running I can see starting Firefox just maxes out the cpu and it stays there, it's not just a heavy load at startup.I have 3GB ram and it's a dual core Centrino 2GHz so it's not an old system running out of resources and FF ran perfectly well under FC10.

The -162 kernel upgrade just released failed to boot in my x86-64 system. Additionally, both previous kernels failed in (probably) the same way. The progress icon proceeded all the way to its 'f' image, and then hung. I touched escape key, and found several disturbing messages among a dozen or so lines --
mdadm: No arrays found in config file or automatically. A dynamic linking error occurred: /lib64/multipath/libcheckdirectio.so: no such file or directory awk: cmd. line:1: fatal: cannot open file `/etc/inittab` for reading (Invalid Argument). Init: rcS post-stop process (807) terminated with status 2s. I got into rescue mode with my install disk, then looked for libcheckdirectio.so in /mnt/sysimage/lib64 but it was not there. Also, locate -d /mnt/sysimage/mlocate/mlocate.db/libcheckdirectio.so found nothing.
Ran chroot and executed the fakd diagnostic (which I had not seen before) and rebooted. Same problem - although now the screen is telling me SELinux is requiring a targeted policy relabel. My dual-boot-to-vista system has been erratic (requiring fsck several times, and confounding the Vista partition to require file checks), primarily since a large install of Eclipse and multiple plug-ins AFAICR.

I just got the upgrade for the Linux Kernel version 2.6.40-4 on my Fedora 15 x86-64 box today, and the installation completed with no problems. However when I rebooted after doing the upgrade, I noticed that I had no sound. I use an ATI Radeon HD 4350 video card, and the opensource ATI driver, and use the HDMI audio from it for sound, since my monitor has a sound output jack on it. I've booted into the previous kernel (2.6.38.8-35), and sound works fine. I've tried with the new kernel in both KDE (my default desktop environment) and XFCE to get sound, and it does not work in either one. I've tried installing the VLC Phonon Backend instead of the GStreamer Backend, reinstalling Pulseaudio, reinstalling Alsa, modprobing the necessary modules needed for the card, checking all configurations with the available Pulseaudio tools (paprefs, pavumeter, pavucontrol), checked the volumes using alsamixer, and reinstalling the ALSA Pulseaudio plugin. After trying all of these, I can still get no sound out of any application, and I also noticed that Flash video plays at 2-3 times it's normal speed after the upgrade. Again, these problems do not occur on my previous kernel. Did I maybe overlook something, or can anyone else think of something I could try?

I am using 10.04 right now and the other time i tried upgrading to 10.10 beta version or alpha version it turned out to be a complete disaster cause it just wouldnt boot into the GUI no matter what. People say it was due to my ATI driver. Now since its a stable release, I want to make this install as perfect as possible so i dont have to reformat everything like i did last time.
Should i copy my whole filesystem into a external drive? In the event it doesnt work , i can just replace the files with the files on the external drive rite?
