Fedora :: What Is The Command For Unpacking A Tar.bz2 File
Mar 23, 2011
I would love to start using the new Firefox. How would I go about adding the repository and installing? What would I add? Or better yet, what is the command for unpacking a tar.bz2 file?

I ran an update like I do every night and was informed that I have eight packages to be upgraded. I allowed the package manager to run these updates. However, it became stuck. The first thing to be upgraded is file-roller. I get the message "Unpacking replacement file-roller ..." and then nothing. I left it like this for about 30 minutes and then decided to stop it with ctrl-c. That didn't work. I rebooted and ended up having to fix the package manager as it was locked because it thought it was running. I tried to update again and after about ten minutes, it's still hung on the same spot.

Windows I have the abbility to right click on a zipped file and see what the unpacked size would be, even without unzipping the file first. Maybe it's plugin from one of the Unzip, Untar programs I got or maybe a windows tool, I don't know. Is there something similar in Ubuntu? So here's what I want to do:I have 1000 tar files and I want to know1) the file size of the packed files (which is easy as it's just the file size now)2) the file size of the unzipped files (and I really don't want to untar all files)Is there a nice command that can give the information I need to complete task 2)?

I just did 'yum update' on my system and got a number of errors such as this one:
Code:
Updating : xfce4-settings-4.6.1-4.fc11.i586 87/184
Error unpacking rpm package xfce4-settings-4.6.1-4.fc11.i586
error: unpacking of archive failed on file /usr/share/locale/zh_CN/LC_MESSAGES/xfce4-settings.mo;4ad11889: cpio: open
Sometimes instead of "cpio: open" it was "cpio: rename". There were a total of 18 such errors. These were listed as failures in the summary at the end. I then did another "yum update" and it redid 17 of the 18 successfully. It did not redo f-spot. Here's a snippet of the summary at the end of the first update:
Code:
Updated:
apr.i586 0:1.3.9-1.fc11
b43-fwcutter.i586 0:012-2.fc11
bluez.i586 0:4.42-6.fc11

Still when I click on it, it has no program associated with rar files. When I search the drop down menu for applications I can't find it there either. What can I do?

I used to be able to put a .sh file into a folder to make it into a global command.
Instead of typing:
Code:
/home/user/tool/conversion/convertmkv.sh /home/user/mkv/thisone.mkv
I could type:
Code:
convertmkv /home/user/mkv/thisone.mkv
Where to hide my executable .sh files to make this work?

Does anybody know how to get attributes for a video file from the command line? For instance I'd like to get the video file running time. I've looked all over and I can't find out how to do this; the "file" command shows some data but not running time. I'm sure there has to be a way.

Is there a way to use the diff command between an older and a newer version of a file and only display the lines that have been added to the newer file and not the ones that have been removed without any of the explanation formatting, just the new lines. I'm trying to bypass the process of putting both files into a database and running an SQL "left join where old data is null" as I will need to do this on a regular basis.

Defining tcsh aliases through a .aliases file has worked perfectly for me for years and years using cygwin and older versions of mandriva. I am encountering very annoying and mysterious problems when attempting to do the same thing with a .aliases file in a fedora 64-bit VM. Strangely, if I define aliases in the file, they won't work, but if I do so on the command line, then they will.
Here's a simple example: Suppose I define an alias for "ls" in the file:
alias ls '/bin/ls'
Then source the file. This happens:
me: ls : Command not found.
me: alias ls
/bin/ls
me: /bin/ls
file1 file2 file3 etc.
me: unalias ls
me: ls
file1 file2 file3 etc.
me: alias ls '/bin/ls'
me: ls
file1 file2 file3 etc.
A second example: if I place either of these lines in my .aliases file:
alias d '/bin/ls -alF !:1'
alias d '/bin/ls -alF !*'and source the alias file, this happens:/ me: d
Bad ! arg selector. However, if I define the alias on the command line:
/ me: alias d '/bin/ls -alF !*'then the alias behaves correctly:/ me: dtotal 376

I recently decided to try installing Command & Conquer Red Alert 2 Yuri's Revenge from an old iso file I had floating around my hard drive. I first mounted the iso and copied the files from it into a folder. I then used Wine to install. Everything went according to plan until I went to run the game. When I tried running Red Alert 2 (original) an error message popped up: Error - Unable to set the video mode. When I tried running Yuri's Revenge the same thing happened with one small exception, the first couple of times I tried the Yuri's Revenge splash screen popped up before showing the error message. However the splash screen no longer pops up.

have been trying to figure out the .basrhc files and decided to change some of the permission of those files. The outcome is that, when i restarted the computer, i try to log in as a user but once i typed the name and login only a black screen can be seen, and can not do anything. I restart the computer and try to log in as a root, the same thing.
Next time I restarted the computer and press ctrl+spack+backspace, and for less than 2 seconds i am shown the console windows and then automaticaly comes back to the X windows. It seems that console is crashing too. I am using fedora core 8 and i ve got information that i would not like to loose.

My .jar file needs and uses some files in the same directory it's in (everything, including the jar was unzipped into said directory). It runs perfectly when I do java -jar file.jar in the command line, but there's trouble when I double-click the file when running from the file system manager. I've tried a custom command under properties ie java -jar, but the problem is that the .jar file doesn't seem to be able to use any of the files in the same directory. When running, the jar can't find any of the files that it needs.

I need to be able to convert HTML email messages saved as text files (.eml or .msg) to PDF documents, one PDF per email, retaining formatting and images.
Are there any Linux tools that will allow me to do this from the command line (so it can be scripted)?
