Recently I updated to centos 5.5 , every thing is fine , but the mkinitrd can't updated

I just did 'yum update' on my system and got a number of errors such as this one:

Sometimes instead of "cpio: open" it was "cpio: rename". There were a total of 18 such errors. These were listed as failures in the summary at the end. I then did another "yum update" and it redid 17 of the 18 successfully. It did not redo f-spot. Here's a snippet of the summary at the end of the first update:
I ran an update like I do every night and was informed that I have eight packages to be upgraded. I allowed the package manager to run these updates. However, it became stuck. The first thing to be upgraded is file-roller. I get the message "Unpacking replacement file-roller ..." and then nothing. I left it like this for about 30 minutes and then decided to stop it with ctrl-c. That didn't work. I rebooted and ended up having to fix the package manager as it was locked because it thought it was running. I tried to update again and after about ten minutes, it's still hung on the same spot.
since an update to the latest -current version, it comes to an error inside the init script from the initrd.gz on my system, shortly behind the scan for encrpyted devices inside lvm containers.

I want a new kernel RPM in my custom CentOS 5 kickstart distro. I built the kernel, got a nice kernel RPM out, and replaced it in my ks.cfg. The install goes fine until the very end, where Anaconda prints some spurious stuff about mkinitrd failing.I get why it might fail -the kernel version argument to mkinitrd was no doubt for the old kernel. But I have no idea where this is -it's not in the ks.cfg afaict, and so I don't quite get where Anaconda / mkinitrd gets it from.
I'd eventually like to use this kernel for the installer as well, but I think I understand that process much better.How do I tell kickstart / Anaconda / mkinitrd to use the new kernel version number?

setting up Nvidia packages on CentOS. The best advice regarding these drivers that I found was to add the RPM Fusion Yum repository(as well as EPEL, which RPM Fusion depends on).I got that set up, but I still don't have any Nvidia packages available! I'm reasonably confident that I set up RPM Fusion correctly from Yum's output:

But actually trying to install the package gives me: No package kmod-nvidia available. Even a yum search for nvidia doesn't find any packages.
When I select package updater for update software it gives an error I am attached my system information & error file. Every time I selected addons and Mysql i got a notice of a bug report. So i gave in and only selected server and it is installing. I hope i can read enough to get it installed..

I'm not sure if I'm posting in the right section. But when i start the Package Updater it get's a (Error resolving dependencies). The Details in the error are: Missing Dependency: liblzo.so.1 is needed by package mplayer Missing Dependency: libdvdread.so.3 is needed by package lsdvd Missing Dependency: libcucul.so.0 is needed by package mplayer Missing Dependency: libdvdread.so.3 is needed by package gstreamer-plugins-ugly
What do i do? I'm thinking i have to get and install/download these package's but cant find them tried regular searching the web and using Yum. Cant find any of them to install to fix this issue.
I don't know if this is the right place to do this so I will try. I have noticed a lot of posts around the web with the same problems, so I guess this is something that is common, you think it would be fixed by now but anyways. Almost constantly when I try to install a new package with yum in my system it almost always gives me a dependency error, this is the latest one when I try to install HTOP:

I upgraded a system from 10.3 to 11.4 and I get the following error when trying to run mysql:

i am trying to install symantec endpoint on a linux server by this command rpm -ivh sav-1.0.3-8.i386.rpm but it gives me the following error error: unpacking of archive failed on file /opt/Symantec/bin/navdefutil;4ceb8d6b: cpio: mkdir failed - No such file or directory
I have a copy of the DVD Iso for centos 5.3. I downloaded the updated packages to the Centos directory and then ran the repomanage perl script to remove the old files from the directory. I then ran the createrepo and the new iso image with the script code below.
I am using VMWare to test the build, so I have the cd pointing to the iso image. I get the CentOS to start up find and dandy asking the questions for the interactive boot. It gets thru the stage of checking dependencies and then when it starts to copy down the image to the "harddrive" that is when the problem occurs.
One of the updated files is file-4.17-15.el5_3.1.i386.rpm (file-4.17-15.el5.i386.rpm was removed using repomanage), but the loader is looking for the removed file. I've looked thru any dependencies, but nothing specific for the removed file, all are asking for /usr/bin/file with no specific version numbers. I have run a rpm -test on all the rpms, but haven't been able to look thru that to see if there is a specific request for the version.
I did try this, but it just moved on to the next file. I did not replace the file version, but then it found another problem that was the same as this, the updated file is in the repo, but it is requesting the old version. I looked thru the fileslist and others to see if maybe that was the problem, but they were updated to the new versions.
While i am using yum update am getting an error: Error: Missing Dependency: libgpod.so.0()(64bit) is needed by package rhythmbox-0.11.6-4.el5.x86_64 (installed).
Does anyone know how many packages we should expect to see updated in the hop from the CR repo to the GA of 5.7? My update last night just brought me 8 packages - is that to be expected?
I'm guessing Red Hat (and therefor Centos) backport programs like newer Open Offices. Is this true? If so, is there a list of programs that they maintain actively?
I come from ubuntu, and, although they are all linux distros, they differ in a lot of things. Well, I just install the OS and I have a 1 TB drive for storage formatted in NTFS, I identified the device with fdisk -l, but the problem is Centos doesn't understand ntfs partition out of the box. Is there any package I need to install. I tried yum install ntfs-3g, but got an error: "no such package in repos,"
I have somewhere between 8 and 12 servers, spread amongst different webhosts, all running CentOS 5.3. Everything on the servers has been compiled from source: > EngineX, PHP, MySQL, Munin, etc
I compile from source because I usually run ./configure to modify the source before installing. What would be the easiest way to keep the server software updated? I am considering creating custom packages from a server which I would keep up to date manually. Then use Capistrano or Puppet to install those packages on all of my servers.
I have just updated gcc to 4.4.3 on my centos 5.4 server. This all went fine but now i need to update glibc and libstdc++, Any ideas on how i go about doing this.
I came to a "weird" situation when I saw in yum log files that several centOS systems have been automatically updated via yum. I checked the following: 1. chkconfig for init services that could upgrade the system: only yum-updatesd 2. In the config file of yum-updatesd.conf the do_update function is set to no. 3. I tried to look into the directory and there was only modules under 2.6.44.3. So I tried to change the command into: Quote: mkinitrd -c -k 2.6.33.4 -m ext3 -f ext3 -r cryptroot -C /dev/sda2
This command was successful, but I don't know if this is alright. I made the changes in lilo.conf, add initrd = initrd.gz. This is all on unencrypted /boot partition. The boot=/dev/sda1 I also set for the unencrypted boot partition. When I boot the system I get a kernel panic:
