Fedora :: See On Computer Screen That Fsck Is Running?

Sep 4, 2010

I have been using Ubuntu for a couple of years, and I had some problems that nobody could fix, so I thought I would try Fedora.

If I want to automatically fix errors in Fedora (or Ubuntu) on the next boot the normal method is to type [code] sudo touch /forcefsck at a terminal prompt. In Ubuntu after I boot it up I can see on my computer screen that fsck is running, but with Fedora there is no indication on the screen that fsck is running.

Since I can't see it, how do I know that Fedora is actually running fsck?

Ubuntu :: Computer Is Running Really Slow And Screen Fades In And Out

Apr 11, 2010

I am running into a problem with my cpu using a lot of usage with no applications running other than firefox, one window... then the screen would dim as if it is going to screen saver mode, which is not set to do that after 473 minutes of being idle...because I watch full length movies... so if anybody knows about this please let me know, i dont know if I have a virus, but maybe xscreensaver is conflicting with Gnome screensaver builds or something.

Ubuntu :: Hung Up Restarting After An Update - Running Fsck Off Live CD

Dec 23, 2010

My computer got hung up restarting after an update yesterday so I switched it off and back on, which led to the error message "No init found. Try passing init= bootrag", looking that up I found a thread that recommended running fsck to fix the errors.

I first went to disk utility and did the check filesystem and repair button but that just had a pop-up that said "File system is NOT clean." So I went and tried fsck on the drive which gave me the error message "fsck.ext4: Device or resource busy while trying to open /dev/sda1 Filesystem mounted or opened exclusively by another program?"

Figuring this may have been caused by the disk utility I restarted and tried fsck again without opening any other program, and I still get the same error message. What is causing this? Swap? What can I do to get fsck running to fix the original problem?

Fedora :: PC Boots And Start Running The Services The Screen Just Hangs?

Jun 10, 2011

Last time I installed the ATI graphics driver on my PC, it was'nt working fine so I uninstalled that driver. I restarted the PC after uninstalling the driver but then, when PC boots and start running the services the screen just hangs and I don't get into the desktop.

I tried to run the xfs service using service xfs restart and also gdm service using service gdm restart, but in both the cases it shows that Unrecognized Service. So, I think it means that the package for xfs and gdm service is not available in my PC. Is that so?

I tried to get into the desktop by running startx but it gave the following error :-

Fatal Server Error: no screen found

consult the fedora project support at [URL] for help.

check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information.

giving up

xinit: connection refused (errno 111): unable to connect to X server
xinit: no such process (errno 3): server error.

Ubuntu :: Computer Won't Boot \ Opened The Screen But The Login Screen Wouldn't Appear?

Oct 1, 2010

I am using Ubuntu 10.04.1 and I run it 24 hours a day. Recently one morning I went to my laptop and opened the screen but the login screen wouldn't appear. Anytime the cursor appeared, HDD activity would go to 100%. I'm assuming this because the HDD light on my laptop was permanently on. So I made the dumb decision of just holding the power button down and turning it off. When I turned it back on, I noticed it came to a command prompt type screen listing "initramfs" at the bottom apparently wanting me to input a command. I did a lot of research and couldn't find much of anything that would help me. I read about GRUB, superblocks, fsck, e2fsck, etc.. . I tried all of those and nothing has worked so far. Any ideas? I did notice one thing. When I went into the actual install with the livecd, it told me the drive was /dev/sda5, but in Disk Utility on the livecd, it told me it was /dev/sda1

Is there a way to have Fedora just run fsck and fix any errors it finds on boot up?w in Debian distros you can put FSCKFIX=yes in the /etc/default/rcS file to do this. But I can't find the equivalent on Fedora.

Fedora :: Corrupt Ext4 LVM - Fsck?

Dec 3, 2009

I go to bed and my computer is fine and working. I come home from work, no signs of a power outage, and my computer has errors regarding a corrupt disk. Drops to Cmd prompt. My problem is that I want to do the proper recovery on it, and my googling doesn't seem to help. All I see is stuff about how FAST fsck is, but no one wants to talk about how to use it. Besides, I better check with people before I mess everything up.

I have the FC12 install disk I used loaded up now, at the cmd prompt. I have my system mounted, an EXT4 LVM. Do I unmount and then run fsdk.ext4 -fp /dev/mapper/vg_mysys-lv_home ? (lv_home is the one reported as corrupt during boot)

Fedora Hardware :: LVM Crashed After Fsck On Root Partition

Nov 25, 2009

I got 2 HDDs, I had created LVM by two of them. When I was trying to install quota it was saying it is better if you run fsck first message. When I tried to run fsck. It warned me that I could lose some of my data. So it happened. Actually it is worse: I can't boot my Fedora 11. When I try to run installer in rescue mode, it says no linux partition find. When I try to install (just to see partitions) it shows LVM volumes of hdds are ok but the partition which is / (root)partition seems in unknown format. How can I save my datas? Or can i restore my partitions, LVM?

Fedora :: Can't Give Root Password For Boot Fsck

Nov 6, 2010

UPDATE: This is a bug: [URL] Evidently the problem is with plymouth because a workaround is to add "rd_NO_PLYMOUTH" to the kernel boot options. I don't get a prompt for my disk encyrption pass phrase---just a flashing cursor---but that's a small price to pay for being able to run fsck when the root filesystem wasn't umounted properly.

I have fully updated f13 (as of today) on a laptop with all ext2 file systems (It has nothing but flash memory.) If it's shut down without unmounting all file systems, it drops to a shell and asks for the root password to run fsck when it's rebooted. Every key press is treated as though it were <enter>, with a response to the effect that the password is incorrect.
