I have a Fedora 12 system running just fine (AMD box w/2 Maxtor 200 GB (PATA) hard drives. I have a spare 320 GB drive (fallout from a Windows box HD upgrade) and would like to replace 1 of the 200 GB drives in the Fedora system. Is there an easy, straightforward way to do this w/out messing up the system?

So I had a Linux box with two drives running happily for years. Both drives were in the same logical volume, and the second had a file system on it.
The the boot drive croaked. I replaced it and reinstalled CENTOS (making sure, of course, to be careful to use the new drive). The I put the second drive back into the volume group (and that's it).
I'm assuming I probably need to create a new logical volume, because that's how it was before, but I really really don't want to format it.
Am I missing a step or am I screwed?
Fsck -l showed the following output both before and after I put the drive in the volume group. code...
I am running OpenSuse 11.4 with Gnome3, with 2 hard drives. One is for the system and has three partitions - root, swap, and home. The second is only data storage. Last week I started getting popups stating I had a hard drive going bad. I checked SMART status in disk utility and had several bad sectors on the system drive, so I cloned the drive to a new one with Clonezilla. Here is where everything went kooky. When I booted the new disk I had a ton of errors at boot along the lines of unable to find a drive. Upon closer inspection I realized the the system located the drives by device id instead of the traditional /dev/sdx. So I started playing with grub settings but never could get it to stop looking for the old hdd. Next, I popped in my net install disc and found I could do an upgrade install which proceeded normally. When I rebooted, no more boot errors, but I get to the black screen with spinning cursor and it will not proceed any further, I even let it run overnight and when I woke up, spinning cursor. As for troubleshooting, I was able to CTRL+ALT+F2 to a console and log in as root successfully but not as a user. When I try to log in as a user, I enter my username, then password, the "have a lot of fun" flashes by quickly and I am returned to a login prompt. I logged in to the console as root and created a new user and tried logging in again, but same thing. I am able to do an ls -l on /home/mike and all my files are there and the listed permissions look ok. I am at a loss as to what to try next. My old hdd will still boot, I just pulled it to reduce risk af data loss. I have never used auto yast before but I always see the prompt for it during an install. Can I clone the system with auto yast on to a different hard drive. Does it strip the by-device-id from the image? Which logs should I check?

Trying to install on an older x86 box.Problem is that when detecting my hard drive, Fedora 12 recognizes it as a sda hard drive instead of hda hard drive. I have no SCSI connected to my computer what so ever. It's much larger than the current one, so I plan on splitting it up to dual boot it with Ubuntu.I have no problem with partitioning a drive (I always keep a LiveCD handy), but my question is this: how can I go about moving the existing partition to the new drive? This is a laptop, so I can't simply plug the new drive into another slot.
Also, even if I manage to move it, will Windows still work on the new drive in a larger partition? I've had this laptop for quite a while, and I've lost the recovery discs that came with it a long time ago. I also have a lot of software without CDs to reinstall them with. This makes not reinstalling Windows a high priority.
Sometimes when I do anything write heavy such as transferring backup or downloading large files from the net, the machine crashes almost completely.
View 8 Replies View RelatedMy cdrom was sort of working, but the tray was physically damaged. The usb was working without a problem.
After replacing the the cdrom drive with a similar model known to work well I could not get it to mount. I then tried to move important files to usb to try a fresh install. The usb stick flickered when I put it in, but it didn't mount. Same behaviour as the cdrom, the light goes on when I turn on the computer, but once I'm logged in I can't access the cdrom.
I have tried multiple variations of playing with fstab and trying to mount things in terminal to no avail. I just can't get Ubuntu to recognize the usb or cdrom even though their lights go on when I first try to use them.
As the title says, I have a failed RAID5 hard drive. What's the easiest way I can go by replacing it? I've seen many ways to do this, but I would like to know what other people are saying about this, and see how you would do it.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running fedora 8 on a mobo with 1 ide controller and 6 sata ports. I use this computer as a samba file server essentially with only a power cable and network cable on the back of it (i.e. pure text terminal install ). I have 2 ide drives and 3 sata drives. No raid configuration, JBOD. This setup is working with devices /dev/sda -> /dev/sde.
When I add an additional sata drive instead of the system booting up and me having a /dev/sdf available to partition and mount. I get a [FAILED] I believe at the "Checking filesystems" point. Basically it seems that which ever port I plug the sata drive into, it conflicts with the port beside it. Thus if in the first port available it will say "No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/sdc1". If I move it to the next one it says the same thing but with value /dev/sdd1.
The bios will show the new hard drive. Hopefully this is enough information. I figure it could be any number of things but probably obvious for you linux gurus.

I am noticing problems accessing the firewall gui and mounting the second hard drive in my PC running Fedora 13. This is only when I am accessing the machine with VNC. If I am sitting in front of the physical machine, I have no problems at all. I would like VNC to behave more like I am sitting in front of the computer. Is there a way to do this? View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to get Fedora 11 (x86_64, netinst) installed on my machine, but am having trouble with the hard drive selection and partitioning. This machine has 2 x 320GB hard drives. One for Windows, and one for Linux of course.
When I first tried the install, both hard drives were attached to the computer. I was expecting to see the drives seperately so that I could partition and install on only one of the drives, but device mapper kicked in and showed me a single 640GB long partition. Not very helpful in my case.
I decided to simply unplug the Windows drive so that fedora didn't see the two identical drives and so would not try to map them. However, with only the linux drive plugged in, the installer doesn't see it. There are no hard drives to select from in the installer.
As a test, I plugged in the windows drive solely and unplugged the linux drive, and low-and-behold, fedora sees the windows drive. This is getting slightly confusing at this point as both the hard drives are identical. I can't see why the installer would recognise one but not the other. Yet it recognises the extra 320GB of hard drive space if both drives are plugged in and device mapper tries to raid them. I tried the debian installer to see if it had the same problem, but it was able to see and install on this drive. I would have tried OpenSUSE as well but this computer doesn't have a DVD drive.
I haven't tried a "nodmraid" boot option yet, so I am going to try that tonight, but I'm interested to hear what the community thinks of this problem.

I've also had a 640GB plugged in that was detected fine (probably because dm didn't try to raid it being the odd hdd out) but has been removed while I'm troubleshooting the fedora install.
I'm using fedora 12 alpha live-usb. and because of space limitation, I don't want to install some applications that I need(say gcc, gdb,..? ) Is it possible to run application from my hard drive which I have installed fedora 11?

Now I want to use the 320GB as a second hard drive since I have lots of data on it. View 6 Replies View RelatedI have two 3 hard drives, one with Linux Mint, one with Fedora, one with Windows. For some reason, I can only choose Mint or Windows in the menu at the start. Also, when I boot on mint, I see my hard drive with Windows:
320 GB Hard Drive: 320 GB Filesystem.
But for the hard drive with Fedora I only see:
1.0 TB Hard Drive: 524 MB Filesystem.
From Mint I can go in this filesystem and there is a folder name Grub, can I take the info there and paste it into Mint's grub ? If so, how ?

View 2 Replies View RelatedBackground is this: Laptop has an internal h/d (obviously) so I removed it from laptop. Then set Bios to boot from external h/d. Installed Fedora 11 on ext. h/d no swap partition as drive already has 4 partitions. Fedora ran lovely!! I then replaced internal hard drive but left bios to boot from external hard drive. Boot screen for fedora came up, hit enter and fedora started loading. The little balloon started filling up, got to a quarter full and then screen went black. Had to reboot to get going again,same thing happened. Can anybody tell me what may be causing it,i.e. black screen. Fedora boots up and runs lovely with internal h/d removed. Any help very gratefully received. M/c has intel dual core processor, 3 gig of ram.
