Jan 16, 2010I have WINE installed and need to mount some disc image files, I posted in general help because this is just relating to the mounting. I have various formats other that .iso, i have .img, .ccd, .bin, etc. How would I would go about doing this? I have something called gmount-iso but it only mounts iso's.

Jun 30, 2015I have been using debian from the past 3 years on a dell inspiron 1520 (2007 model). Yesterday i bought a dell inspiron 5548 (Early 2015). I have and ssd drive in old laptop that i want to move to the new laptop. To my knowledge i think i can replace the 1TB hard drive on new laptop with ssd, remove or reinstall or update drivers so the ssd will just run fine on new laptop without having to reinstall all the stuff and customization. Should i recompile the kernel in linux for new hardware? AFA windows 7(Dual booting Debian 8 and Windows 7), i think removing and reinstalling drivers will work fine.

Dec 19, 2009I have recovered a whole dying hard drive using the command ddrescue, only 8192 byte out of 4.3 gigabyte are unreadable.I have used the command (gnu) ddrescue /dev/sdb DiskImage.img..But unfortunatly this way i have a full-disk image that is not mountable... ( or at least i don't know how to mount it ), and the disk doesn't seem to work anymore that good... ( crack crack crack... ).To see the partitions inside the "big" file, i have used fdisk -l, and damn there is only one partition, but how can i mount the content???
I know i could use photorec foremost or similar software, but since the disc image is almost perfect, i would be able to preserve file names, paths and dates...The last idea would be to mount it as a full-drive image with Virtualbox... But transferring data would be quite annoying.

In F12 runlevel 3 in mc I see it in /dev/disc/by-label as @Newx20Volume. But I don't know what is the correct path.

Jan 5, 2011I have an HPDV7 running 11.3.
I have a new 16GB SDHC memory card.
It is formatted FAT-32 LBA
When I plug the the card into the DV7's internal MMC/SD card slot, it automounts as /dev/mmcbkl0p1.
I can then access files (camera images) on the card with Dolphin, etc.
When I plug the card into an external card reader(USB interface), automount fails and I can see a long string of messages from dmesg. It is attempting to mount it as /dev/sdd, I see numerous I/O errors as it attempts to read various sectors.
The card reader is a Kingston FCR-HS219/1.
The 16GB SDHC card in the Kingston card reader combo works on my WinXP machine, so (apparently) the combo does work.
A 2GB SD card (FAT16) in the Kingston reader works on both WinXP and the HPDV7 11.3 laptop.

Jan 1, 2011I have just installed 11.3 x64. The installation went fine and worked for the first few hours. I ran the online update tool, and now it cannot find grub unless the installation disc is inserted and I select the "boot from hard disc" option.
I have read about the problem of the root partition being back, but not sure that's it.

There used to be a repair tool in the installation disks. I could not find that in this media. Is that still available?

Mar 10, 2010this blew my mind today, because i've been using ubuntu for 2 and half years. Brasero 2.28.2 in Karmic does not have an option enable multisessions when burning disc or import a disc which has a multisession.
Seriously, wtf is going on? This is supposed to be Ubuntu's default CD authoring software.

I have created a usb boot disk for installing windows.
So I want to re-format the whole hard disk. Then boot up with the usb and install windows. Once I have done that. Then use the rest of the hard disk to install Fedora 14 from my other usb.

May 24, 2011I'm trying to install SL6 to a pair of 2TB harddisks in a RAID 1 array. The problem is that when the "Formatting" progress window that says "Creating ext4 filesystem on /dev/mapper/pdc_eahgdeafbgp1" comes up it appears to eventually freeze. It's been like that for 6 hours without the progress bar moving at least. I have another identical system that I booted up using the gparted live cd to see if I could get any more information using that. I first created a 500MB ext4 partition and mkfs.ext4 ran almost instantly. I then tried 5GB and it seemed to take maybe about a second or two and worked fine. I then jumped up to 500GB and it's been running for about 5 hours now. I'm pretty sure that I remember the creation of an ext4 filesystem occuring extremely fast even for very large partitions, but this is the first time I've played with RAID.

Jan 19, 2011I was reading the fedora Disk requirements and it said you need 9 GB of disc space. Which partition should this 9 GB of space be on? I plan on having a / root partition, /home partition, a swap partition, and a /boot partition.

Dec 28, 2010I recently installed Fedora 14 on an old computer which was already a dual boot Windows XP/Ubuntu machine. As there weren't many problems I felt encouraged to install it on a newer dual boot (Windows 7/Ubuntu 10.10) machine. Apart from a lot of bother with the wiFi card, all appeared to be well. However, I decided to boot into Ubuntu to make sure that it worked as before and was disagreeably surprised to get a message saying that Ubuntu only had 12.5 Mb disc space left when previously it was installed on an 80 Gb hard drive.
I have had a look at the drive, using gparted and found that there are two ext4 file systems, one on /dev/sdb1 and one on /dev/sdb3 which have used 2.93 Gb and 500 mb respectively. /dev/sdb4 has an exclamation mark (!) beside it and is lvm2 and occupies 68.15 Gb and appears to be unused.
Would it be possible to shrink this lvm2 file system and expand the one that contains Ubuntu. If so, how can I identify where Ubuntu is located? there is also /dev/sdb2 which is an extended partition of 2.93 Gb as well as /dev/sdb5 which is a Linux swap of 2.93 Gb

However I have tried to upgrade to Fedora 10 from a disc but the pc fails to find the disc. It is the same drive I used approx 6 weeks ago to install Fedora 9 so I am at a loss.

Jul 14, 2009Somehow the install iso disc won't go into upgrade mode. My f10 is on the hard disk, but needing to be rescued. I would do f11 upgrade; but can't get the disk to do an upgrade. It only wants to install.
Checksum was good, etc. iso is fine. Is there a log file or something which it keeps getting hung up on, thinking it's supposed to install instead of upgrade which I could change or delete?

Aug 4, 2009Seven times I was downloading the fedora11 disc1 i386 iso and the sha256 checksum was bad. When I try ftp.belnet.be mirror I can get the correct checksum. I understand the copy process between mirrors probably was errors. Becarefull friends. This bad iso aborts the installation process.
