Red Hat / Fedora :: Trouble Formatting RAID 1 Array To Ext4
May 24, 2011
I'm trying to install SL6 to a pair of 2TB harddisks in a RAID 1 array. The problem is that when the "Formatting" progress window that says "Creating ext4 filesystem on /dev/mapper/pdc_eahgdeafbgp1" comes up it appears to eventually freeze. It's been like that for 6 hours without the progress bar moving at least. I have another identical system that I booted up using the gparted live cd to see if I could get any more information using that. I first created a 500MB ext4 partition and mkfs.ext4 ran almost instantly. I then tried 5GB and it seemed to take maybe about a second or two and worked fine. I then jumped up to 500GB and it's been running for about 5 hours now. I'm pretty sure that I remember the creation of an ext4 filesystem occuring extremely fast even for very large partitions, but this is the first time I've played with RAID.

i have a fedora 11 server which can't access the ext4 partitions on lvm logical volumes on a raid array during boot-up. the problem manifested itself after a failed preupgrade to fedora 12; however, i think the attempt at upgrading to fc12 might not have anything to do with the problem, since i last rebooted the server over 250 days ago (sometime soon after the last fedora 11 kernel update). prior to the last reboot, i had successfully rebooted many times (usually after kernel updates) without any problems. i'm pretty sure the fc12 upgrade attempt didn't touch any of the existing files, since it hung on the dependency checking of the fc12 packages. when i try to reboot into my existing fedora 11 installation, though, i get the following screen: (click for full size) a description of the server filesystem (partitions may be different sizes now due to the growing of logical volumes):
Code:
- 250GB system drive
250MB/dev/sdh1/bootext3
lvm partition rest of driveVolGroup_System
10240VolGroup_System-LogVol_root/ext4
[code]....
except he's talking about fake raid and dmraid, whereas my raid is linux software raid using mdadm. this machine is a headless server which acts as my home file, mail, and web server. it also runs mythtv with four hd tuners. i connect remotely to the server using nx or vnc to run applications directly on the server. i also run an xp professional desktop in a qemu virtual machine on the server for times when i need to use windows. so needless to say, it's a major inconvenience to have the machine down.

I've tried to install Fedora 11, both 32 and 64 on my main machine. It could not install as it stops on the first install window. I've already filed a bug but really haven't seen any feed back yet.The bug has something to do with Anaconda and the Raid array but I really can't tell.
I have an Intel Board (see signature). I am running intel raid software under W7 currently. It works fine. But, I'm wondering, when I attempt to install F!!, is my current raid set-up causing problems? Do I need to get rid of the intel raid software and use a Fedor/Linux raid program to manage the raid array??

I've a flash drive that it's partitions formatted as fat32, ex4 and encrypted ext4. It works fine on the system that I've formatted it on, but when I try to use it on my other Linux distributions I get these problems:
* ext4 partition accessible by root only.
* after entering my pass-phrase I get
Code: /dev/mapper/udisks-luks-uuid-***** uid1000 is mounted What I'm asking for is a way to create the ext4 file system without being attached to some UID and to be accessible by any user.

I have a NETGEAR ReadyNAS NV+ with four 1TB drives in a RAID-5 array. This is our primary file storage. This has previously been backed up to a hardware RAID-0 array directly attached to our Windows server. The capacity of this backup array is no longer sufficient. So the plan was, take a bunch of 200GB to 320GB drives (And a 750) I had kicking around, chuck them in a couple of old SCSI drive enclosures I have collecting dust, attach them via IDA/SATA-to-USB adaptors to a USB hub, attach that to the server, create a JBOD array spanning the disks, and back up the NAS to that. Performance is not an issue as this is just to be used for backup, with the idea being as near to zero cost as possible (Spend so far = NZ$100ish).
The first hurdle I struck was Windows not supporting Dynamic Disks on USB drives (Required to create a spanned volume). At first I resisted using another machine (i.e. a machine running Ubuntu) as I didn't want to dedicate a piece of hardware to backing up the NAS. I then decided it would be acceptable to do this via a VM, which is what I've done.So I have 10.04 running under VMWare Server 2.0.2 under Windows Server 2008 R2. The disks are all presented to the VM. I wasn't sure if I was going to end up creating the array under LVM or something else, but I noticed Disk Utility has an option to create an array, so I tried that. When I add two 250GB drives, the array size is 500GB. When I then add a 160GB drive, the array size drops to 480GB. Huh? If I keep adding disks (Regardless of order) the final array size comes out at 1.8 TB, as per the attached screenshot. Now with the following drives, I expected something more like:
160 + 250 + 250+ 750 + 250 +200 + 200 + 250 + 320 + 250 + 320 = 3.2TB
Am I missing something or making a false assumption somewhere?

What are the proper steps to do format an NTFS to EXT4 ?

I was thinking about reformatting my thumbdrives and external HDs from NTFS or FAT32 over to ext4. Anyone know if this could potentially cause any problems? They won't be used on a win machine.

Tired of fat32 fragility, I reformatted a 4GB pen-drive as ext4 using Yast's partitioner. I chose format as ext4 and checked fstab options "can be mounted by user", "no access time" and "ordered journaling". I thought that these fstab options would be ineffective since a removable device won't be added to fstab. when I insert the pen-drive it auto-mounts and the folder /media/EMTEC is created (EMTEC is the volume name). The relevant mount entries are:
Code:
:~> cat /etc/fstab | grep sde
:~> cat /etc/mtab | grep sde
/dev/sde1 /media/EMTEC ext4 rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,barrier=1,data=ordered 0 0
:~>
There's no fstab entry, as it should be, and there is a mtab entry corresponding to the pen-drive, /sde1. However the /media/EMTEC as created (by udev, I suppose) is owned by root, I can't write to it. But if I change (as root) the /etc/EMTEC folder permissions so it belongs to the regular user, i can (obviously) write to it *and* it stays so *between* remounts. Haven't tried a reboot yet. What I'm not sure is if ordered journaling is OK for a pen-drive - or any kind of journaling, for that matter. Or will this significantly decrease flash memory life? Also, the fstab options set in Yast appear to be remembered by whatever creates mtab, as well as /media/EMTEC permissions. Is that so? Where are these settings kept? How does this work?

i had an ntfs partition..i formatted it to ext4 with gparted..w i cant write any files to it..i think because gparted executed with root previliges so it has now made root the owner of the drive.

How can I format a USB hard drive to ext3/ext4 or whatever file format and have full permission to read, write and execute all files afterwards? When using the command line (as ROOT of course) mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdb? Restricts the rights to ROOT as does the procedure gParted. The man mkfs did not help much. Configuring the fstab- file is a bit of a hassle, so it would be nice, if there was an option to set the permissions "correctly" right from the beginning. Setting Ubuntu (I'm using Ubuntu 9.10) up, so that it mounts USB devices not as ROOT as default but giving all users all permissions seems to be really complicated, as a guy from my local LUG told me.

I have a software RAID array using mdraid that consists of two 1.5TB drives that I use for storage, the array is mounted at /Storage. I am running out of space in the array so I ordered two more 1.5TB drives to create a 4 drive RAID 1+0 array which will be 3TB big. My question is how do I create the new array and not lose any data?
The drives and partitions are sdc1, sdd1, and soon to be sde1, sdf1. I currently have 4 RAID arrays (md0,md1,md2,md3). I think I can create the RAID 1+0 array with the two new drives, copy the data from my current array to the new one, remove the old array, then add the two original drives to the new array. But I wanted to ask on here first to make sure my data doesn't go poof.

1st I am relatively new to linux (but not to *nix). I have 4 disks assembled in the following intel ahci bios fake raid arrays:
2x320GB RAID1 - used for operating systems md126
2x1TB RAID1 - used for data md125
I have used the raid of size 320GB to install my operating system and the second raid I didn't even select during the installation of Fedora 14. After successful partitioning and installation of Fedora, I tried to make the second array available, it was possible to make it visible in linux with mdadm --assembe --scan , after that I created one maximum size partition and 1 maximum size ext4 filesystem in it. Mounted, and used it. After restart - a few I/O errors during boot regarding md125 + inability to mount the filesystem on it and dropped into repair shell. I commented the filesystem in fstab and it booted. To my surprise, the array was marked as "auto read only":
[Code]...
and the partition in it was not available as device special file in /dev:

i have a dell server. its a couple of years old and has a perc 4 raid controller in it. When i do an install it shows the drives configured in the raid 5 configuration. i select the disk and do an auto partition. It goes for about 10min then errors with "error formatting drive volgoup00 the error is serious occurred press enter to reboot" or something like that can remember all the words. It doesn't give any info about the error.
i get the same error on centOs 5.5 and Ubuntu server 10.10
There is a firmware update for the raid controller that i could apply but dell's site was not letting me download it yesterday. Other than that I am not sure what to do. I could try an older version of CentOS 5.4 but i figure someone might tell me how to fix this so i can run the newest version.

When I tried to install fedora13, f13's installer kept seeing my hard drivesas a "BIOS RAID set (mirrorred)".Ubuntu10.04's installer had the same problem withmy drives but that installer was less informative than f13's installer. U10.04's installerjust stalled in the first screen, the one with the word Ubuntu above five dots, giving no hintas to what it didn't like.My pc came from Dell with 2 identical SATA hard drives in a RAID level one array.I changed CMOS settings from "RAID ON" to "ON" for each hard drive. That did not dismantle the RAID configuration, at least notin a way that satisfied f13's installer.
I reinstalled xp and tried to install f13 after a minimal xp installation.f13's installer detected "BIOS RAID metadata."What is it that f13's installer is detecting?I thought this might have something to do with nVidia's nForce4 Serial ATA RAID controllers. These are installed when you install the version xp that came with my system, not like most other drivers which you install after xp.I contacted nVidia but theycouldn't help me with this.Well, it turns out to be Dell's fault. They place this "BIOS RAID metadata"in a special place on each hard drive of a RAID set. It survives even the formatting that accompanies a reinstallation of xp.
If you want to truly dismantle a manufacturer's RAID set, you must use software like "dban" (www.dban.org) to thoughly wipe clean the drives. Download dban, burned it to a cd, then boot that cd. dban's auto??? command didn't work for me but its dod command did the trick. The process took aout seven hours for each of my 160gb hard drives. Hey, i was real impressed by the help i got throughout all the twists and turns that took this problem far away from the original statement Special thanks to Scotty38and to the "Troy Polamalu looking" young man working at Best Buy here in Little Rock, he understands how manufacturer's are shipping their pcs.

I'm currently building a Raid5 Volume Set (HW-Controller, 3 disks). After some diskussion I decided to don't use a partition since I don't see any disadvatages writing the filesystem (ext4) directly onto the device.
Because I plan to expand the volume set with 2 more hard disk drives, respectively the filesystem, to get the complete disk space available I read the ext4 manual. There is an extended Option called max-online-resize with the description:
Well, although I've searched for more details on the internet I can't find any. Primary in which case is it usefull to set this value because later resizing should be possible without to set this value. Maybe it accelerates the resizing process?
Next, I also plan to use the options stride=stride-size and stripe-width=stripe-width. Is it advisable to set these values for the final volume set (Raid5 with 5 drives) or do I have to set it for the first volume set (Raid5 with 3 drives) and then changing these values during the later resize process for the filesystem? (I personally prefer the first method).

Is there an easy way to give it more space without loosing the whole setup?I have 2TB of data on this server and everything is so fine.

Consider the following setup: Ubuntu system installed on a separate SSD for speed. An ubuntu software RAID array consisting of X number of physical HDD's for storage (RAID6 or RAID10). RAID setup is done during system install. If I suffer a total crash of the SSD and loose my system, will I be able to, using a new system disk, "reconnect" to the RAID array even if the "mothersystem" of the software RAID is lost? If yes, are there any particular config- or system files I need to backup to be able to rescue the array or will it just be recognized "out-of-the-box" when reinstalling ubuntu?

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 x64. I am not trying to install Ubuntu on a RAID 1 drive like all of the guides are for. I have a RAID 1 array that I am using for data storage. In windows it shows as a single array just fine. In linux it shows as 2 separate drives. I don't care how they show up to be honest I just have to data written to one drive written to the other automatically as well so my RAID isn't screwed up. Looking through different articles and forums I find a lot of stuff saying that it should show up under /dev/mapper/dxxx or something under /dev/mapper. All that shows up there for me is a device called control which doesn't seem to do something.

I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 64bit and wanted to get access to my nvidia RAID array. This array is working, and is NTFS formatted. But wasn't showing up through normal means in Ubuntu. (for example the NTFS Configuration Tool didn't display it) Here's what the system showed.
Code:
root@hermes:~# ls -l /dev/mapper/
total 0
crw------- 1 root root 10, 59 2010-11-03 22:39 control
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 7 2010-11-03 22:42 nvidia_dadijiag -> ../dm-0
[code]....
Is my mirror still in effect, or did i just mount one of the specific drives from the mirror?

Just setup with Debian 8 (LXDE) a few weeks ago. Raid10 array was preexisting.
Was working well. After booting I would need to go to the save as then would need to enter the root password and everything would be good.
Can't access the array.
Used to use the command $ mount /dev/dm-o /home/myspace/folder under Debian 7.6 to mount the array (no longer works).
blkd lists a /dev/md0 but instead of UUID it is PTUUID

I want to make a RAID5 array with 4 2TB hard drives. One of the drives is full of data so I will need to start with a 3 disks and then once I copy the data from the 4th onto the array, I will then add the 4th drive. This will be my first experience with RAID. I've spent a few hours searching for info but most of what I have found is a bit over my head.

I'm just about to be given a Power Mac G5 (Late 2005) Dual 2.0GHz. I think this was the last G5 produced.I plan on using it as file server/NAS and will probably run 10.04 LTS (or maybe 8.04 LTS). I would install a SATA RAID controller and run 4 1TB drives in a RAID 5 configuration. The only thing I'm unsure about is choosing a compatible RAID controller. I need to find a RAID controller that
- Is PCIe
- Is compatible with both the Power Mac and Ubuntu PPC
- Does true hardware RAID
- Doesn't cost a fortune!
Am I right in thinking that the card might need to be open firmware compatible? If it makes any difference, I plan on running the OS from a separate 5th drive. I've found this on eBay. I asked the seller and he claims it supports true hardware RAID and says the chipset is a Silicon Image SIL3124. I does seem suspiciously cheap though...
