Fedora :: Little Nightmare And Remove Or Disable Pulseaudio?

Jan 3, 2010

I posted a topic earlier, mostly about my wireless, but the sound problem I mentioned having on Ubuntu seems to have followed me to Fedora. From the information I've gathered, it appears to be due to Pulseaudio. Basically, I'm not very adept with Linux info outside the ordinary terminal commands for yum, sudo, yast, etc and I need to be able to either completely remove pulseaudio or disable it entirely somehow. From my experience on Ubuntu, just muting or disabling sound won't fix a thing... This problem doesn't seem to exist for me on Windows (though it would take a lot more than this to make me bother with that again), so I'm guessing it isn't anything too critical to fix (like a hardware problem or whatever else).

solve this little nightmare and remove or disable pulseaudio? Between the two sounds (a sort of buzzing for no real reason and a slight popping when some sound effects happen), I'm in a pretty annoying position.

General :: Su -c "yum Remove Alsa-plugins-pulseaudio Pulseaudio" - Distribution With No Pulseaudio?

May 22, 2011

I've had nothing but trouble with Pulseaudio in Fedora 14. I had managed to get rid of it in Fedora 10 with the command: su -c "yum remove alsa-plugins-pulseaudio pulseaudio" I just don't want to have to deal with Pulseaudio anymore. It does not like my sound card and gets in the way. Is there a Linux distribution that does not use Pulseaudio ?

Fedora :: Nvidia Cuda 3D Kernel Nightmare?

Aug 14, 2011

I've been trying to get the Nvidia drivers from the nvidia site installed by running-devdriver_4.0_linux_64_270.41.19.run

I have a GeForce 210 PCI Express DDR3 graphics card. I've recently screwed an old version of fedora trying to do this and ended wiping it and installing Fedora 15. I managed to get the standard setup working nice with dual screen support and Tux Kart working smoothly which has never happened before with ATI cards.

The reason i've tried to get an NVIDIA card working is so that i can try to do some development with CUDA. To do this i need to get the proprietary driver working. To get the install program working correctly i've edited the kernel options in grub.conf to stop nouveau driver which seemed to work. The next step i got onto was the need for the kernel source which i've installed. The program can't find this, even with a load of Symbolic links giving-

/usr/src/linux-2.6.40-4
/usr/src/linux
/usr/src/2.6.40-4.fc15.x86_64
/usr/src/linux-2.6.40-4.fc15.x86_64
/usr/src/linux-2.6.40-4
all pointing to-
/usr/src/Kernels/2.6.40-4.fc15.x86_64

After following the steps of dozens of guides, i now cannot run games that need 3d support and i'm no further in getting the proprietary drivers working. Coding in CUDA is a distant dream after weeks of faff in my spare time to go 2 steps back and one forward...

Does anybody know how to do all this? If anybody could help me i'd be very grateful. I've never had decent graphics support in linux. Everytime i've tried it's ended in a horrible mess!

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Package Manager Wants To Remove Pulseaudio-esound-compat?

Oct 11, 2010

I recently installed Quake 3 and Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, and after reading a lot on making the sound work, I found a great resource here. The thing is that when I try some of the solutions this is what happens:When using apt-get install esound, the package manager wants to remove pulseaudio-esound-compat & ubuntu-desktop. When using apt-get install libsdl1.2debian-alsa, the package manager wants to remove libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio & ubuntu-desktop

The sound is working flawlessly except for those two games, and I'm not sure if removing those packages (especially ubuntu-desktop) will make a mess. So I guess my question is What will be the impact of removing those packages? To rollback the system I just remove the new packages and install the old ones?

Some libraries, libasound and similar, are installed from backports but it seems wine wants the older version. How can I install wine without this endless loop and without breaking anything, please?

Ubuntu :: Grub-pc Update Nightmare For The Inexperienced?

Feb 3, 2011

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04LTS, which I installed just over a month ago, from the 10.04.1 maintenance release livecd. This is a brand new PC and I'm not dual booting.

I've just done an update via the "update manager" and following the security and normal package updates, I'm greeted with the following message to do with grub-pc (and I believe grub-common is also being updated).

[Code]...

I'm not sure why I'm getting this message, as I've yet to change anything to do with grub and the only alterations I've made so far, are adding some of my favorite applications, changing the theme, wallpaper, added codecs, fonts, Etc..... Definitely nothing to do with any configuration files.

I'm a little reluctant to proceed without a little advice, as the last time I encountered something similar, I encountered a nightmare getting my system to boot again. The other reason for asking for advice, is so that other newbies encountering this might be able to find an answer to this issue.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 - Remove/disable Automatic Login Option

Jul 5, 2010

I've just installed Ubuntu 10.04 desktop. I've created two user accounts, one for admin purposes and the other for standard users. At boot up, I have the option to pick one of the created accounts or select "automatic login." When I select automatic login, it logs me into the admin account. I've double checked that the "don't ask for password" option is not selected on either account.

The only thing unusual that I did was select the "don't ask for password" option during the install, and then later (after the install was complete) decided that's not what I wanted and unchecked it.

I need to accomplish one of two things. Either change it so the auto login applies to the standard user account, or remove the auto login option from the login screen altogether.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Dongle Makefile Nightmare - Don't See The Driver File In The Folder Contents

Apr 1, 2010

I'm trying to get my new Wireless USB dongle to work with Xubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala. I've extracted the .rar file that was on the drivers CD that came with the dongle. According to the ReadMe....

The Model Name is: RT2870 Wireless Lan Linux Driver Driver Name: rt2870.o/rt2870.ko Hardware: Ralink 802.1n Wireless LAN Card Description: This is a linux device driver for Ralink RT2870 USB ABGN WLAN Card. My issues:

1. I do not see the driver file anywhere in the folder contents... I suppose that I have to "build" it.
2. In the makefile the chipset is default set to "CHIPSET = 3070" & the folder that holds all the extracted files is named 2008_1128_RT3070_Linux_STA_v2.0.1.0 so I'm confused as to whether this dongle has a 2870 or 3070 chipset inside. Does it matter?
3. Sorry, I'm a bit of a n00bster when it comes to all this, but I'm having some problems with the build instructions. It reads:

Fedora :: F12 Pulseaudio Pops On And Off?

Dec 9, 2009

I am running F12 on a lenovo X61. 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03) If my machine is quiet for a while, then suddenly needs to make a noise (eg some sort of notification event), the audio "pops" when the first sound is made. It sounds like the noise you hear in the speakers when the audio cable is connected to a live jack while the speakers are on. A static POP.

Once that initial pop is over, the audio sounds exactly like I expect it to.Then, if there is no sound for a period of about 10 seconds, I can hear the audio pop again. If I then play a sound, I will hear the initial static pop again. It's as if pulseaudio is powering up my audio system when it needs it, then powers it down when it doesn't need it any more. And, in fact, I found that something is going in in the kernel. If I look at lsmod, I can see things changing.I did an lsmod with the sound "on", then waited for it to pop off, then did it again and noticed these diffs:

< snd_hda_intel 25080 3
---
> snd_hda_intel 25080 2
34c34

[code].....

Now I also have F12 running on a desktop machine that uses an nVidia chipset. I have no audio pops on that system. I noticed that there are similar changes in lsmod on that system, though.

Fedora :: Screening Line In With PulseAudio On F11?

Oct 17, 2009

I have my stereo plugged into the line in on my computer. When I wanted to listen to something on it (like, say, FM radio), I could just go into the mixer, unmute the line in on the playback, and I could listen to whatever was streaming in over my computer speakers.

Now, the helpful ALSA mixer has been replaced by a PulseAudio mixer that has a REALLY helpful single "master" channel....and that's it. Does anyone have any idea how to allow the line in to simply play back through master using PulseAudio? I shouldn't need to use an additional app for this, ALSA used to just play it back happily before... Even the alsamixer on the command line now has been captured by PulseAudio, so it just shows "master" for playback.

Fedora :: How Does GNOME Start PulseAudio

Nov 23, 2009

The upgrade from 11->12 went very smoothly for me on multiple servers except for one seemingly small item that had me tearing my hair out for a few hours. Three of my machines are MythTV frontends, which rarely do anything else. As such, I have them fairly stripped down package-wise and run MythTV on GNOME with xorg-x11-xinit-session to kick it off via an .xsession script. This scheme has worked flawlessly for years across many versions of Fedora until last week when MythTV mysteriously would not start and the computer would just get stuck in an automatic login loop. I discovered that I could start MythTV after I logged into the GNOME desktop and through some testing and log inspection came to realize that it was PulseAudio that was not starting automatically. I also discovered that I could just SSH in while it was in this loop and issue 'pulseaudio -D' and the next automatic login attempt would start MythTV properly.

As a quick hack, I just tossed 'pulseaudio -D;sleep 3' into my .xsession script and it seems to be working for now. I am interested to know how it used to start up without logging into the desktop before the upgrade. Could this possibly be related to udev or dbus? I have practically no knowledge of those, but do see config files for both in the pulseaudio package.

Fedora :: Pulseaudio Not Staying On Task?

Dec 5, 2009

I'm getting increasingly aggravated with tis so I figured I would ask and see if there are any insights on this.

I'm currently running F12 on a Dell XPS m1330 laptop. Everything is going great with the exception of pulseaudio. Rather than using the internal mic and speakers I'm using external (usb) Bose companion speakers and and external mic that is integrated into my Microsoft Lifecam Cinema webcam.

Now, when these work, they're spot on. No issues at all. HOWEVER, pulseaudio frequently disregards them and tries to use something else (the internals) or just stops using them. Nothing crashes, nothings broken, they just get "deselected". This happens when I back out of a game or program, log out and login, etc. I then have to jump through a series of hoops to get it configured back for the "correct" setup.
