Ok, still on to the silent Java. I use Java to play Runescape. I can hear the (midi?) music but none of the ambient sounds. In a chatbox I (over) heard that it is clever (needed/required) to use Pulseaudio. How do I make the JRE use paulseaudio?
View 3 RepliesI'm using Fedora 13 and think this behavior comes from Pulseaudio. To make it simple, all my sounds are played in my GNOME session. What's making sense because it's where Pulseaudio is launched. So, when I switch VT (CTRL+ALT+Fx), all sounds from my GNOME session is muted. What's not the actual problem. It's in fact a good behavior. The problem is I use some VirtualBox virtual machines on other VT launched with the xinit command.
These VMs emit sounds but I'm not able to hear them because I'm not on the VT of my GNOME session. But once I get back on my GNOME session I can hear all sound from the VMs. What I want, it's to be able to hear all sounds played by the VT on which I currently am and not everything and only in my GNOME session. How I can accomplish that?
I have a PC installed with Fedora 11 and I want to use this machine headless as a music server, my amplifier is connected to this machine. After a normal installation I've changed the default runlevel from 5 to 3. I can connect from a client, using FreeNX, to this machine and I get a normal Gnome desktop. So far so good.
The problem is there is no sound. But when I log into the machine directly, still in runlevel 3 and execute the script /usr/bin/start-pulseaudio-x11 an make a new remote-desktop connection there is music. Is there a way to make pulseaudio working in a remote desktop.
I've had nothing but trouble with Pulseaudio in Fedora 14. I had managed to get rid of it in Fedora 10 with the command: su -c "yum remove alsa-plugins-pulseaudio pulseaudio" I just don't want to have to deal with Pulseaudio anymore. It does not like my sound card and gets in the way. Is there a Linux distribution that does not use Pulseaudio ?

I have a headset microphone plugged into the built-in audio input. The output is plugged into an amplifier > speakers.
Pulseaudio is "helpfully" routing the microphone input signal to the speaker output. I do not want this. I go to pavucontrol and disable the "monitor of the internal audio analog stereo" -- and what I say into the microphone is still coming out of the speakers.
Google gives a lot of information about how to live-stream mic input over the Internet. And, I found this here (that's for karmic, I'm running lucid):

... but that's about how to ENABLE loopback. It says loopback should not be enabled by default, but I very clearly hear that something is doing the same thing as loopback.
(Of course, I need to hear sound from applications that are playing, and when I'm dictating text into NaturallySpeaking running under virtual box, I need sound input to go there -- so turning the mic all the way down to zero is not the solution.)
I'm fairly sure I remember hearing this behavior ever since installing Ubuntu, and I didn't do anything to turn it on. I can't imagine most users would prefer this behavior -- if it's the default behavior, why? It makes absolutely no sense to me. (Sorry. It's one of those piddly little configuration things that costs a couple of hours of web searching time, and after a while I just have to give up, but not before becoming much more frustrated than I should have to.)
So, to be clear, here's what I want:
- Applications playing audio should send sound to the main output.
- Applications receiving audio input should hear the microphone.
- Microphone sound should not EVER go to the main output unless I have explicitly launched an application making the connection. (The signal goes input -> output even when NO application is open - hence my consternation.)
I need to get Java working on Firefox. I read some instructions that had one create a link in .mozilla/plugins, to a java library, so I did. When I load a website with Java on it, I still get the message about needed to install a plugin. Not sure what is up. I wouldn't care so much, but I have some equipment that has a Java web interface that I need to configure. If I can't get Java working on Firefox, then that is a problem. I've put the link I created in the plugins dir below.

It starts okay in its original folder, but when I link to it from e.g. the desktop it doesn't work.
i cannot seem to find a proper way to make Java my default application to open .jar files. I just made a new Debian 8.3 install on my laptop HP Pavilion G6 and the default application for opening .jar files is the Archive Manager. But when i go to "Open with.." section on right-clicking the .jar file, i get no JRE or JDK option to choose. I just installed the openjdk 7. I can manually run them from the bash, but it would be much more convenient if i just double-clicked it. Here is what i get when i run several commands in the bash :

I am running F12 on a lenovo X61. 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03) If my machine is quiet for a while, then suddenly needs to make a noise (eg some sort of notification event), the audio "pops" when the first sound is made. It sounds like the noise you hear in the speakers when the audio cable is connected to a live jack while the speakers are on. A static POP.
Once that initial pop is over, the audio sounds exactly like I expect it to.Then, if there is no sound for a period of about 10 seconds, I can hear the audio pop again. If I then play a sound, I will hear the initial static pop again.It's as if pulseaudio is powering up my audio system when it needs it, then powers it down when it doesn't need it any more.And, in fact, I found that something is going in in the kernel. If I look at lsmod, I can see things changing.I did an lsmod with the sound "on", then waited for it to pop off, then did it again and noticed these diffs:

Now I also have F12 running on a desktop machine that uses an nVidia chipset. I have no audio pops on that system. I noticed that there are similar changes in lsmod on that system, though.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have my stereo plugged into the line in on my computer. When I wanted to listen to something on it (like, say, FM radio), I could just go into the mixer, unmute the line in on the playback, and I could listen to whatever was streaming in over my computer speakers.
Now, the helpful ALSA mixer has been replaced by a PulseAudio mixer that has a REALLY helpful single "master" channel....and that's it. Does anyone have any idea how to allow the line in to simply play back through master using PulseAudio? I shouldn't need to use an additional app for this, ALSA used to just play it back happily before... Even the alsamixer on the command line now has been captured by PulseAudio, so it just shows "master" for playback.
The upgrade from 11->12 went very smoothly for me on multiple servers except for one seemingly small item that had me tearing my hair out for a few hours. Three of my machines are MythTV frontends, which rarely do anything else. As such, I have them fairly stripped down package-wise and run MythTV on GNOME with xorg-x11-xinit-session to kick it off via an .xsession script. This scheme has worked flawlessly for years across many versions of Fedora until last week when MythTV mysteriously would not start and the computer would just get stuck in an automatic login loop. I discovered that I could start MythTV after I logged into the GNOME desktop and through some testing and log inspection came to realize that it was PulseAudio that was not starting automatically. I also discovered that I could just SSH in while it was in this loop and issue 'pulseaudio -D' and the next automatic login attempt would start MythTV properly.
As a quick hack, I just tossed 'pulseaudio -D;sleep 3' into my .xsession script and it seems to be working for now. I am interested to know how it used to start up without logging into the desktop before the upgrade. Could this possibly be related to udev or dbus? I have practically no knowledge of those, but do see config files for both in the pulseaudio package.
I'm getting increasingly aggravated with tis so I figured I would ask and see if there are any insights on this.
I'm currently running F12 on a Dell XPS m1330 laptop. Everything is going great with the exception of pulseaudio. Rather than using the internal mic and speakers I'm using external (usb) Bose companion speakers and and external mic that is integrated into my Microsoft Lifecam Cinema webcam.
Now, when these work, they're spot on. No issues at all. HOWEVER, pulseaudio frequently disregards them and tries to use something else (the internals) or just stops using them. Nothing crashes, nothings broken, they just get "deselected". This happens when I back out of a game or program, log out and login, etc. I then have to jump through a series of hoops to get it configured back for the "correct" setup.
When I start PulseAudio Preferences (paprefs) in Fedora 12, all checkboxes for Network Access, Network Server and Multicast/RTP are grayed out. The feature I'm trying to enable is DLNA. Figuring maybe I'm missing some package needed to enable DLNA-support, I click the Install... button next to the checkboxes for this feature. Installation fails as I already have the rygel package installed, which provides the needed files. I have tried first uninstalling the rygel package and then reinstalling this from PulseAudio Preferences, but still no luck. what needs to be done to enable the grayed out checkboxes for DLNA-support in PulseAudio?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am having issue with the mic is not working with the latest pulseaudio. My mic was working before about 1 month ago and I don't remember which version of pulseaudio it was.
I looked at the pulse audio volume control and I can see my quickcam under the Configuration tab and it is set to Analog mono audio input. Then, I started skype call testing but I can't see anything under the "Input Devices" tab when it shows "All Except Monitors".
I have a fedora13 version that upgraded mythtv to 0.23. Since that time, I've had sound problems. Mostly the sound has stopped working completely, but works with all other applications. Every once in a while the sound will work.
My sound device is ALSA:default and I have experimentally allow pulseaudio in my environment. This worked fine before the mythtv upgrade. I tried using the pulseaudio device in mythtv, but it works really poorly (lots of loud static).
I just removed Pulseaudio from both Fedora and Kubuntu due to the way it stalls other programs from launching after logging into KDE. After rebooting Kubuntu, KDE sounds, JuK and VLC all had sound, presumably via ALSA.
However, Fedora has KDE sounds but no sound in JuK or VLC. When I launch JuK, KDE reports that the HDA Intel analogue device does not work. Could this relate to Gstreamer? If Fedora falls back to ALSA if Pulseaudio is removed, does Gstreamer require additional plugins? Kubuntu has "gstreamer0.10-alsa", but Fedora doesn't seem to have an equivalent.

I do not know is there people who hates to use PulseAudio but I do because it causes unbearable sound latency. So I removed pulseaudio entirely and using pure alsa. Everithing seemd to work ok in KDE, other programs like Skype work too.But! espeak just hangs.StarDict just hangs. Removing espeak "cures" stardict but.... It is nice to have speaking dictionary and other text-to-voice apps, and, damn it, e-speak is compiled such way that it just does not work without PA. It's a pitty.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI posted a topic earlier, mostly about my wireless, but the sound problem I mentioned having on Ubuntu seems to have followed me to Fedora. From the information I've gathered, it appears to be due to Pulseaudio. Basically, I'm not very adept with Linux info outside the ordinary terminal commands for yum, sudo, yast, etc and I need to be able to either completely remove pulseaudio or disable it entirely somehow. From my experience on Ubuntu, just muting or disabling sound won't fix a thing... This problem doesn't seem to exist for me on Windows (though it would take a lot more than this to make me bother with that again), so I'm guessing it isn't anything too critical to fix (like a hardware problem or whatever else).
solve this little nightmare and remove or disable pulseaudio? Between the two sounds (a sort of buzzing for no real reason and a slight popping when some sound effects happen), I'm in a pretty annoying position.
I have Seamonkey set to play a .wav file when mail arrives. Since the latest update to pulseaudio, whenever mail arrives part of the sound plays, then one of my processor cores goes to 100% running pulseaudio. When I kill that process, the system returns to normal. This happens every time a sound is played.

Killing pulseaudio and the application remedies the problem, but obviously that's not a solution.I have a ca0106 sound card. [edit: originally had emu10k1 here -- that's a sound card I have that's unused in the same system.]

Sometimes, in fact quite frequently, when I boot up my system, PulseAudio does not work. ('Connection Refused'). If I log out of my normal account, log in as root, log out of root, and log back in to my normal account, this seems to reset Pulse Audio and it works again. Seems like a security glitch, but I can't be sure.
