How can I find out what happened when it crashed, like 'Event Viewer' in Windows?
right now, dmesg shows something like code...

Fedora Installation :: Preupgrade Does Not Work After Crash
Nov 19, 2009I was running preupgrade and while it was downloading packages the system was suspended and then shut off. When I brought it back up and tried to run preupgrade again it would not finish the download it just said 'Download complete. Reboot.' So I did bit nothing happened. I tried running it again but still nothing.
I then ran 'yum clean all' and then tried preupgrade again and then it tried to download again but once it goes to the download part it just says its done and says to reboot.
Fedora :: Grsync/rsync Crash / Grsync Run For Some Time And Once It Nears Completion It Will Crash?
Jun 14, 2011I'm running Fedora 15 with current updates and kernel. I do not have anything special or non-standard about my configuration or setup. I use grsync to sync my home folder files to a remote rsync server on my network. I've checked my hard drives and my memory and everything else I can think. Here is the problem:
grsync will run for some time and once it nears completion it will crash. This, however, is no standard crash. It literally shuts my computer "OFF". I have shared the remote rsync folder through CIFS as well and I can copy those exact same files through nautilus with drag and drop without issue. I have had a few occasions where the rsync process will complete without issue, but this is a rare occasion. Since it powers my computer completely off I do not enjoy the luxury of having any log files or messages to attempt to diagnose from.
Fedora :: Inkscape Crash On F12?
Dec 1, 2009So I puts my shinny new F12 install on my new computer. It's a little climb for me but for the most part easier then some of the other F's that I have tried to install.
One problem I have right now is my inkscape crashes as soon as I try to put some text on a page. I tried the automatic bug report thingy but it complained about me not having a log in. inksacpe is really becoming a very important application for me, I have been trying to shy away from the Windows programs I have been using.
I must say, F12 seems to really be advancing the fedora project into a nice desktop system.
Fedora :: F13: Kde/kdm Login Crash
Jul 9, 2010after mistyping my session passwd at the kdm login, I retried again and the greeter instantaneosly crashed and X died on tty1 (black screen, blinking cursor in upper left corner) Switching to tty2, I tried to login again but did not succeed to start X again, so I rebooted the system and looked at Xorg.0.log.old. There I found: xf86CloseConsole: VT_WAITACTIVE failed: Interrupted system call
Here we go again!
P.S.:
I do not know how long this error exists, I noticed it only yesterday and the updates today didn't help.
Red Hat / Fedora :: Crash Following Update
Nov 21, 2008I have recently installed Fedora 9 about a dozen times and everytime I apply the recommended system updates, the system crashes upon reboot, leaving me at a dead "GRUB" message (not a prompt). I would love to be able to update my version; suggestions?

Working my way through the how to's, this is my first linux experience!When I choose the user switcher > other OR system > Logout user > Switch user my system goes to a blank screen and I can only get it back by using the reset switch (or power off)If user1 logs out, user2 can then log on and vise versa.I can go to applications > terminal as user1 and su user2 no problem ( and back to user1)but if I use the user switcher = problem.I am fairly sure that the users are set up correctly, they all work individually.I searched the forums and there seems to be no current similar problems mentioned.My system is a gigabyte GA K8VM800M (onboard graphics and sound) AMD Sempron 1GB ram 40GB HD I used the DVD to install on to previously used HD with no other OS on it, I chose the 'use the whole hard drive for fedora' option and had no reported problems with the install.Have I got something set up incorrectly? or where should a look for help on this.

Oct 19, 2009after playing games using WINE, I noticed that the system went Black screen of death.
I had to hard boot the system and now system is hanging. However, I can ssh into the system from another machine so I know only X windows hung.
I can log in using NX client without any issue, but can not log in from the console.

Fedora :: Box Crash As Often As My Windows - Just Freezes ?
Nov 26, 2009Almost everyday my notebook freezes. I know the kernel is still up and running because I see my hd led activity lit from time to time and when I pressed the wifi/bluetooth button it also lit on and off with no problem.
The problem is my XWindows, it's just freezes and there's nothing I can do with it. I still can move my mouse cursor but I can't click anything because the screen is just freezes.
I tried to pressed Ctrl + Alt + F2->F5 to go into console mode. Not working.
The only workaround is turn-off and turn it on again.
This happened after I installed F11. with F10 I have never seen such problem
Here is my configuration :
- Notebook Acer Travelmate 6292
- 4 GB memory
- VGA is Intel on-board.
Sofware I uses when the freezes happened :
- Virtualbox 3.0.10
- I use compiz/emerald
- Gnome
- Firefox
- Limewire (sometimes)

Fedora Installation :: F12 X Server Crash Often
Apr 4, 2010I just upgrade my desktop to F12 and using it for few weeks now..Everything seems working fine except X server crash on me often.
Anybody out there have the same problem?
Need a work around solution for this.
Attattched a copy of Xorg.3.log.old for reference.
My system is as follow:
Intel P4 2.26Ghz
Kernel 2.6.32.10-90.fc12.i686.PAE
memory 1G
Fedora :: Crash While Updating F12x86_64 KDE
May 22, 2010I have a crash that occurred after first install while updating. The update was 1.2GB Had to reboot 5 times to complete the update downloading process. Much of what I read suggests KDE, xorg and qemu as part of what is causing the crash, but I haven't found a similar issue. After the update completed installation the crashes were less severe but still occur when updating.

The latest crash occurred after yum update and left a large amount of information in konsole. It disables wireless networking so not sure how the bug is related. During the first yum update I had to reboot the system to get full functionality back. After the first update I just had to wait for system to return to normal.

Fedora :: F13 I686 Box Keeps Locking Up Without Crash?
Jun 7, 2010I upgraded from F12 i686 to F13 (I should say clean install). And now ever so often my computer locks up...... I will wait for an update or something this week but if it continues after I may have to go back to F12 (on another HDD)

Fedora :: [F14] GNOME Crash On Login?
Dec 4, 2010I've just installed F14 64bit on my desktop and I tried to run Open Office Writer. As a result, GNOME crashed and the rendering of the desktop was messed up. I had to force a reboot, and now everytime I login the Open Office recover dialog causes a crash again. I suppose it has something to do with the opensource nvdia drivers and OO.o's toolkit but I can't look at it with the crash-on-login thingy there (I suppose I can install the closed source drivers from a tty now that I am thinking it again....)

Fedora :: Gambit 2.4.6 Crash On Startup
Dec 23, 2010I've recently installed the Fedora Core 14 on my laptop. Unfortunately, when I try to launch Fluent preprocessor Gambit 2.4.6 it immediately crashes giving the following message: Received exception: Assertion failed in /usr/local/fluent/build/gambit/dev/gambit_lnamd64/include/BPPTREE_CC.hpp, line 288: status == 0 I'm absolutely clueless of what might be the cause of this problem (all dependencies are resolved, at least all i know of, and all the updates applied, however the problem occurred both pre- and post-update). As i have already mentioned, there were no particular (aside from the libXm.so.3 ones...) difficulties in using it on former Fedora releases.

Whenever i start LibreOffice the X server or gdm crashes and i get to the login screen of gdm.
Does Libreoffce have a log file? There are so many Xorg/gdm log files, i don't find anything...
Fedora :: F15 Works But Causes Next Reboot (into Any OS) To Crash?
Jul 19, 2011I haven't seen anything like it before. I have F15 installed dual-boot with Windows Vista, and I've updated packages. Booting into F15 works fine, no issues.
However: if I shut down and reboot into either (a) Windows or (b) even just the BIOS config screen, the system crashes abruptly after about 1 minute (with no warning/error) and tries to reboot. Booting straight back into F15 sometimes seems to cause the issue, but not always.
The reboot then fails, it doesn't even get to BIOS screen - all that happens is disk lights (HDD, DVD-ROM) keep thrashing. Manual reboot (hold power button for 4 seconds until shutdown; press power button to restart) doesn't help; reboot still stalls. Only disconnecting from mains power, reconnecting, and rebooting works.
It might not even be a Fedora issue - I've tried recent Ubuntu and Mint 11 live CDs, and they cause the same problem - but I'm posting here since I like my F15 installation and want to keep it I've noted that older distros on live CD (eg. F14, SuSe 11.3) don't seem to cause this problem. Maybe a recent kernel issue?
How can something in F15 persist across soft reboot and crash a completely different OS?

Fedora Installation :: Installer Bug / Crash On Windows 7?
Oct 7, 2009I currently run windows 7, I am interested in dual booting, upon burning the .iso to the disc using imgburn, I had a few problems with the installer when I ran the live disc, I'll assume it was personal causes, I googled several things for a simple solution, I went with using the Disk Manager in Windows 7 to shrink my current partition which I only have one which is running Win 7 on 140 GB's, using the shrink function in windows I unallocated 20 GB of that partition, I used this option because the option in F11's installer would not work at all. I rebooted from disc, loading the distro, and run the installer via desktop choose the use free space option and I got an error crash when it tries to execute this option which isnt the only time I got this error bug causing me to exit the installer, I copied the debug information in the details, I hope this is something simple because F11 isn't worth this much time.

Fedora :: Keep Getting Notices That There Is Some Sort Of Kernel Crash ?
Nov 25, 2009I just installed it on my ancient IBM T-42 thinkpad, and am completely satisfied.
However, I want to help fedora get better.
I keep getting notices that there is some sort of kernel crash.

Dec 1, 2009Fedora 12 installed about a week ago. Using Yum extender to add (K desktop) and remove (unused languages) when at the end it crashed. Now the Internet stopped working. Firefox, Konqueror, and Yum terminal updates have stopped working.

Dec 21, 2009Sound disappears as soon as I try to use an application e.g. News Video Fox, CNN, BBC or playing a video disk or cd disk, and a kernel module crash is reported (listed below from logs) After this happens no sound, and the desktop freezes (X11 only Linux is fine). Restarting X obviously do not solve the problem.
It seems that Fedora 12 has sever problems with Intel Sound cards.
I guess it is not really a Kernel developers problem but more the authors for the sound module causing the crash. I already reported it through the popup to "kernel-oops" by clicking on the "black screen" popup reporting the crash on FC12.

Fedora :: Random Firefox Crash - How To Debug
Feb 17, 2010My firefox (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.1.6) Gecko/20091216 Fedora/3.5.6-1.fc11 Firefox/3.5.6) on Gnome 2.26.3 will randomly crash, without any errors. /var/log/messages & /var/log/Xorg.0.log doesn't show anything that caused any errors. And it doesn't matter on which website(s) I'm busy with, it will just crash.
My PC has:
Intel Pentium(R) Dual-Core E5200 CPU
4GB DDRII Corsair RAM
3x 160GB SATAII HDD
Asus Nvidia 8800GT graphics card.
I have updated to the latest nVidia drivers

This is on Fedora Core 12 x86 I have disabled the only 3 Firefox plug-ins that I installed yesterday, but this problem has been looming for a long time. Something interesting that I picked up is that Thunderbird will close randomly (very seldom though) as well, so I don't know if it's Firefox specific though.
I have picked up that it happens more often when my PC's memory usage is above 2GB RAM, and memtest86+ didn't indicate any memory problems. If I have less tabs open, it happens less often, but the more tabs I have open, the more often it happens. At the same time, on the same PC, when I'm in Windows XP SP3 (dual boot), I can have many more tabs open as well as Thunderbird, Quickbooks, Photoshop CS3 and some other applications, and it doesn't cash.

Sep 19, 2010i'm running on an i686 architecture with a 32-bit processor, and i'm using a fully updated firefox, more or less. i was able to install adobe flash 10 successfully, and i can load, manipulate, and access flash programs without incident. however, if i am running a flash program on one tab, and then in another tab i load another program (say an advertisement), the original program crashes.
why this is annoying:
i will listen to a song on videos, and open another tab to browse. a flash advertisement will crash the videos video. the video's viewing area turns white/gray and requires a refresh of the page - not a restart of the browser - to work properly. the only add-ons i installed are firebug and fireftp.

Fedora :: Load F15 Along With REL 6 - Qemu Hard Crash
Dec 25, 2010Anyone familiar with QEMU? I'm attempting to load F15 for testing purposes along with REL 6. This is what happens, all goes well until it is actually starts downloading files to the virtual disk which appears to work until it gets to about 1/2 way completed, then it hard crashes(actually shuts the machine down). Also I had to turn of ACPI because when it is enabled it just hangs the VM altogether. I'm wondering if I should also turn off APIC?
Is there some way of loading a VM in verbose mode or debug mode to see what is happening and maybe causing this hard crash. The log files for QEMU shows nothing other then the normal loading of the virtual machine, its given name, source ISO and things of that nature.
