I have a little problem here with my fedora 13.After starting this morning, i get a black screen with the busy icon attached to my mouse. But no Login Screen appear.by pressing ctrl+alt+backslash, xorg stops and a new instance seems to start with the same behaviour as the old one.
System config:

I have done three times clean install for this and still i can't find what causes it.
When i do my clean install and configure my installation, after reboot i can login.
I see the login splash and then, i see a black screen and the only thing i can do is open applications with ALT+F2 command and change TTYS to login as root and i can move my mouse pointer. When i startx with root everything works awesome... Probably i changed something i musn't... Can the option "start everytime with new session" cause it, if yes how can i fix it and if not what can i do?
I'm attempting to install debian on my old ibook g3. Upon normal boot I get a black screen with a bar (attached image) I boot the kernel with init 1 and I see that I have no xorg.conf, so naturally I input xorg -configure. Attached is the log, as I am under Windows and read it. View 14 Replies View RelatedI keep starting up Fedora and I'm not able to get far (although it's not always at the same time) before my screen will go black, except it shows the mouse/cursor - but it's frozen, and thhen the caps-lock light starts blinking and I can't do anything or get it to recover. Sometimes it happens after 30 seconds, sometimes 40+ seconds and sometimes within 15 or so seconds.
How do I stop this and diagnose this?
I've tried, in the boot-startup to choose an older kernel version, butt the same thing occurs!
I have:
Fedora 11
Kernel: 2.6.29.6-217.2.16.fc11 i586
Asus EEE PC 1002HA
One other thing, it does always seem to happen after I've turned on wireless. And I've been using F11 for months now with no issue.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 11.04 today as the main OS on my laptop.I had deleted my XP partition, and repartitioned it according to a guide I had found. (http:url)......Basically it was setup like this: 500mb ext2 primary partition, has the grub folder, I believe this is either the '/' partition, or the '/boot' partition 2gb swap space logical partition
10gb ext4 logical partition -- this is either the '/' or the '/boot', it contains the 'bin,boot,cdrom,dev' etc folders 243gb (the rest of my hard drive, with the exception of a partition that contains documents and files from my XP OS, formatted to NTFS) ext4, this is the one that has all my desktop/documents/etc folders.After Ubuntu was done installing, I had some message pop up about installing an ATI proprietary driver for my ATI graphics card (an ATI Radeon HD 4330, I believe, I may have messed that number up). I installed it and rebooted, no problem.
Next, I had another update window pop up with 198 items checked and ready to download and install. I went through all of this, and rebooted, again, no problem.Next thing I did was install some apps that were essential for me to have to use for my work (an ide, chat programs, etc). No problem with any of that.Last thing to install was the OSE Virtualbox, and then I installed WindowsXP Pro and Windows Vista Business, then installed the guest addition addon for VB. This all worked without any issues whatsoever.
Time goes on, and I notice my computer is heating up much more than (seemingly) normal. I begin to wonder if its my graphics card. So I shut down the computer and let it cool down. Reboot, and no problem, still working fine.Then I opened a couple of apps and tried a simple game (can't remember the name) I believe it was a simple 3d topdown, as I wanted to test my graphics card. This is where things seemed to start to go wrong. My laptop began hanging, not even allowing me to access the terminal via ctrl+alt+f2. The screen flashed and I saw the blue/green/grey fuzz that I get when the graphics card is starting to heat up too much. Then everything hangs and I can't do anything at all, including move the mouse. I did a hard reboot (I believe this is what you call pulling the plug/pressing the power button, correct me if I'm wrong). I then rebooted, saw a chkdisk, then it booted seemingly normal, but it hung right after the purple screen after the grub screen.
This is pretty much where I'm at right now. I strongly suspect the fault is with the ATI drivers, but have been completely unsuccessful in my attempts to fix it. I've googled just about everything I could think of, along with searching these forums. I've tried just about everything listed in the forums, but to no avail.I've tried the commands that are supposed to purge the ati drivers, but all I get are errors that say they can't remove the 'virtual drivers'.
Right now I'm booting off a live cd, so I know the computer still works fine, just not my actual installed OS. I'd really like to get the issue resolved without having to reinstall, as it took quite awhile just to get it usable in the first place, but this has already taken so much time, I may just resort to that if we can't solve it any other way. Got too much work to catch up on as it is.As a re-instated note, perhaps if you have any tips, but not particularly about fixing the OS, my laptop (I'm strongly guessing my graphics card) is heating up much more than normal, compared to that when XP was installed. Is this more than likely just a driver issue, as is the rest of it? Also, I did have Compiz installed, though I didn't choose for it to be installed, I believe it came pre-installed. I've heard it could cause some issues, though I have no idea as to the validity or relation to this particular issue.

I just remembered while searching for a solution, I found a post somewhere that said something about the information not being sent to the monitor from the graphics card properly, thus no desktop. I'm guessing that'd still fall under the driver issues, but again, I'm unsure. I would think that wouldn't be entirely true anyway, since I can still see my mouse fine, just no desktop, only a black screen.
I was messing around with the screen orientation and thought it would be funny to orient it sideways. Big mistake The screen went black.I can force a shutdown, login and I get the same black screen. I tried hooking up an external monitor and the monitor showed no input so I'm guessing my laptop doesn't have that capability with Fedora.This is my main computer.

After the installation I shutdown and went to sleep.The system now boots to purple screen ubuntu dot loading and then to black screen with the mouse pointer in the centre. Then nothing happens. I searched in the forums and tried to go to recovery mode and ran dkpg, then failsafeX, but failsafeX cannot detect my input devices, Hence I can't do anything.
I've installed 11.2 KDE on a very old samsung V20 specs here: [URL]... My problem is that when I boot I get a black screen with just the mouse pointer. I can boot in failsafe fine, but the graphics are horrible. My question is, is there a workaround or am I flogging a dead horse with this laptop? Yesterday I was just thought of trying other Desktop Environments. so I logged out to choose a different session. I tried LXDE and logged back out. After that I found "metacity" in the sessions list and tried it. But no desktop appeared. All I got is black screen a with the mouse pointer/cursor. I waited for quite some time but no desktop, panel, etc loaded or was visible.
I could not figure out how to log off so I hit the start button. After reboot the system automatically chose the same session (It always reuses the last used session) and I was in the same sticky situation. I tried starting in Safe mode as well but still I get the same black screen with just the mouse pointer.
have a problem with an Acer Aspire one running linpus linux. I get a black screen with a white mouse pointer at startup. I don't know how this happened. View 9 Replies View RelatedI had a perfectly well running CentOS 5 system but with an old crappy monitor. I replaced the monitor by a bigger one, i did a monitor detect to make sure that CentOS would recognize the highest possible resolution. Then changed the display rsolution for the current user.
Now when i login as root just a black screen appears with a white mouse pointer and then nothing. I already deleted all the contents in the home directory /root but no improvement.
When i login as a new user X is starting perfectly.
Anyone have a clue what i need to do or delete to get X working again? I can nuke the whole box and do a reinstall but i'd rather not.
I'm a linux newbie so go easy on me with technical terms.I've got a Acer Aspire One ZG5. Everything was working fine until one day when I went to switch it on and it shows up everything its suppose to, the blue logo etc but then it loads upto a black screen with the mouse poitner. I thought I'd look into methods of recovering from a lost password for future use, how to change the passwd and shadow should I need to. So I started an X session, vi'd my .swp files then logged off. Perhaps I changed one of these files accidentally, but my intent was just to view them which I did. After starting up my computer the next day and logging in I began an X session - "startx". The session appears to have started, but with a black screen and an active mouse cursor.
I am not sure when this started for me, but I think in a recent update of Firefox. I am running Ubuuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala. I am currently running FF 3.5.6. When I click on a link in a page, or refresh the page, the Arrow/Pointer cursor stays the same in place of the normal busy cursor that I am used to. This is more of an annoyance than a real functional issue, as I can't tell if the page is working except to see the tab showing loading, and the status bar in FF. I have searched the forums, and google/linux, but have not found a cause, nor a fix.
I also use Opera and Chrome at times and the busy cursor works there as expected. I also use Thunderbird and it is working there. So, I believe it is only related to FF. My addons are as follows, but I haven't added anything recently, and it was working before.

I have a Dell Vostro 1220, with Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family graphics card. I work on OpenSuse 11.3 (64bit), on the latest kde.I work on an extended 1680x1050 screen on the left of my laptop screen (1280x800). I set this with Kxrandr and it worked great,a while... Now, it shows a black band on the right side of my laptop screen. I can live with that. But the mouse does not recalculate for this difference, so that I need to click 1 inch to the right of where I want to click.

View 4 Replies View Relatedi have noticed that if vista is not the active partition, hybernate does not work. it just goes black and then back to the user icon screen to log back in. another "slight" problem was that i was not able to apply a service pack. after restoring vistas dominance i was able to install the pack. is there any other work arounds for hybernate? even though you might not be interested in cleaning up after microsoft.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI had 9.10 x64 Desktop installed on a nettop I have (that I normally run headless), and yesterday I decided to take the plunge and update to 10.04. So, I plugged in a screen and usb mouse/keyboard and set to work.
It was 1am, and it was telling me it had 3hrs left to install all the new packages, so I unplugged the screen and usb mouse/keyboard, left the box running, and went to bed. This evening, I plugged it all back in again to check progress. It's asking if I want to remove obsolete packages. I do, but neither the mouse nor keyboard work!
I can access the box via SSH like I normally do; is there any way I can re-enable the keyboard from there?
I'm reluctant to restart the box (via ssh) mid-way through such a complicated upgrade.

I've been having a problem with my mouse ever since installing Ubuntu. I'm using a built in laptop mouse. Whenever I'm using a scroll bar, the mouse seems to become attached to it. When I leave the scroll bar, the mouse seems to be attached to it, dragging the page up or down. Sometimes it does that even when I've been typing after using the scroll bar. I've heard a 3-button mouse is commonly used with Linux. Is that what I need.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've noticed that the majority of the time I will double click an icon to launch and application the cursor activity (mouse loading/busy icon) will not show. The application will launch but there is no indication whatsoever that it's starting up. I haven't had this problem with other Linux distro's and I'm wondering if it's a setting or some sort.
I did notice that on a few applications it works just fine and it will do the loading animation. However, a lot of them will not show it at all. This is very frustrating especially if the application takes a bit to load and you don't know if you even launched it to begin with. Is this a bug or something that can be turned on?
I do hope I explained which animation I'm referring to. It's the circular loading animation that occupies the mouse when you are waiting for an application to finish launching. I'm not entirely sure if this is a gnome thing. Seem to work just fine on my old KDE desktop.
I'm trying to install Ubuntu 8.04 on my computer (yes...I know version 10 is out...I will get it when I get this version installed).Here's my dilemma, I get through all the way to the partition. I don't have Windows on the computer, so check the button labeled something like "Whole Disk" or something along those lines. So, after a while (about 1+ hour), it all of a sudden turns into a black screen with the "running" mouse on top of it. View 1 Replies View RelatedI downloaded Fedora-14-i686-Live-Desktop.iso and used the Fedora liveusb-creator to put this on a 2GB USB stick. Everything seemed to have gone well and it said complete; however, when I try to boot from the USB stick, I get a black screen with a linux copyright notice at the top and it just stays at that screen forever. I tried this on two computers with the same results.
I'd previously tried with Ubuntu and had a similar issue, it would go to a purple (if I remember correctly) Ubuntu screen and it sat that forever.
This problem started within the last few minutes. I run a program in my browser that uploads data from my machine (ubuntu) to another machine (Fedora 13), for manipulation and then spits back the data that does not match our standardised information.
When I tried to run it a few minutes ago, it seemed to take a long time to make the connection. I went back and checked the machine, everything was connected and fine. I decided to reboot the machine from within KDE and then try again. Same result. I went to the machine again and tried to login through KDE, the screen goes black for a few seconds and then returns me to the login screen. I switched over to a virtual terminal and was able to login using the same credentials. I checked the .xsessions-errors file and this is what I am seeing:

This is a minor annoyance, but I'd like to know how to fix it... When starting Fedora 12 with KDE, the KDE icon is twice the size of the other icons. I figure it is easy to make it the same size as all the other icons, but I don't know how. If this seems confusing, I am referring to the screen that appears after you enter your password and before the KDE desktop appears. A set of icons appear one at a time. The KDE icon is clearly twice as large as the others.

That is because the machine is under my wife's desk and she is getting a little ticked off that there is a screen right by her foot. The problem is that if I remove the screen then the system gives me a startup error and will not boot. I then have to reattach the screen and select normal startup.

I did a cold boot and the same thing happened. So, I tried it a third time and all is fine. View 5 Replies View RelatedAs a newcomer to Linux I recently installed F12 (2.6.31.5-127) from a full installation DVD and all worked well until I decided to download a bunch of updates. When I next booted up I had a second kernel (2.6.32.9-70) and the usual other option for my XP dual boot (which still works!).Selecting either kernel leads to the Fedora logo on a blue screen and then a black screen with a small underscore cursor in the top left and no other text. This is not a command line or a text editor but it simply displays key depressions - the alpha/numeric section of the keyboard in upper and lower case as normal and then the function keys and numeric key pad as control codes commencing with As both kernels yield the same behaviour, am I right in assuming that it is one of the program updates that is causing the problem? The only way I have found to get out of this screen is ctrl.alt.del which gives a short list of programs being stopped and then the machine reboots. I don't know how to pause this screen to get the details before they disappear.I have been through loads of stuff on this forum but nothing seems to fit. From the command line terminal off the boot options screen I tried su -c yum clean all and also yum clean all but all I get from Grub is error 27 unrecognised command.
As you can tell I'm a complete beginner, but I am willing to learn. The thing is I don't know where to go from here. All I want for now is to get back to the Gnome environment I can handle, then I can explore the command line at my pace instead of being thrown in at the deep end!
I'm running Fedora 13 64 bit. Everything has worked fine, until today. The latest updates killed the video.
As the bar at the bottom of the screen starts to go across and say Fedora 13 the whole bar starts to flash then goes solid white. No errors or nothing, just a black screen. What causes this?
Nvidia drivers are installed. Maybe it's them. I've had trouble with video after updates with the last 4 versions of Fedora.
How to fix this mess?
