View 14 RepliesI have recently updated my GNOME installation from 3.x to 3.14. Suddenly, there are many glitches. The power buttons on the power menu does nothing, I am forced to shut down via the terminal, everything goes black every now and again, and there is a weird colour pattern behind some icons when I hover over them. But most importantly, the icons and text do not show up on the "Activities -> Show Applications -> All" menu. They still there, as you can see the opening animation before they disappear, and I can click on them, but you just can't see them. The "Frequent" menu works fine. I did change the icons, but this was after these problems started happening, and so it should be un-related.
I recently switched from fedora 14 to 15. Today my computer suddenly shut down during an update, as I thought it overheated I decided to clean the cooling system and reapply thermal paste. However, now the system won't boot anymore ("kernel panic - not syncing : VFS: unable to mount root FS on unknown-block").
I would like to either solve this booting problem, or mount the fedora 15 filesystem and recover some files. Whichever is easier.

Shut down speed all of a sudden became slow.. I'm running 10.04 on a dual core 3.2gig cpu with 4 gig ram. Boot up is in seconds and shut down was almost instant. Now shut down takes about 15 seconds. Is there a way to see what is causing ubuntu to hang when shutting down?
View 1 Replies View RelatedYesterday Ubuntu One stopped syncing properly: all files and folders were listed on the web site grayed out and tagged with "uploading", while there was "0 bytes Used". I could still upload files manually to the website fairly quickly, so it probably wasn't purely server overload. Anyway, a number of things happened after that:uninstalled the Ubuntu One client packages and reinstalled them in Account settings on the website, I removed my computer, hoping to make a fresh start the Ubuntu online account login system for some reason forced me to change my password (presumably it wasn't strong enough)
After all that, I can still login to the website (with the new password), but the computer can't login. When I type u1sdtool -s in terminal, the result is

When I open Ubuntu One Preferences from the Me menu, it completely freezes at the Account tab; I can't click anything or even close it (have to kill it in terminal).
I suppose the login failure has to do with the old password whcih was saved in the keyring. The removed computer from the account probably complicates the issue.
I love Ubuntu, and I've been using it ever since a friend of mine recommended it last year. The problem I've been having lately is that no matter what version I use, and how I install it, it keeps freezing up on shut down and/or restart. It's been doing that for the past 6 months or so, and I had stopped using it for awhile, because I wanted to wait for the latest release and see if it keeps happening. Well it does...
I am currently using the new windows installer, wubi, and I don't see any difference from the way it was before, when I installed it directly, not through Windows... I keep seeing the same problem, however, and I am really starting to get tired of it.
I have slackware 13.37-64 bit with nvidia gforce 210. Since i did the installation and use the default graphic card driver (nouveau) i see that after some hours of using it suddenly freezes. I can't do anything, even use alt_ctl_backspace or alt_ctl_del for reboot, so i use the button of the pc to reboot. The only thing that i have noticed is that it happens that every time it freezes i am using firefox. But i don't know if it has every relation with this. Offlate I installed F11 i586 on my laptop. F11 shares the hard disk with Vista Home Premium 32-bit. The problem is that when running F11 (or even Ubuntu), my system shut off suddenly(not a normal OS shut down, but a sudden power off without any warning). This could have been a hardware trouble(heating) but it doesn't happen with Vista.

For example, if I try to run "ls /mnt" from the client, nothing will be printed, Ctrl-c does nothing, and the prompt never reappears; or, if I try to view that directory from thunar, thunar will freeze, or if I am playing a video from the share in mplayer, mplayer will freeze. I tried to unmount it:

When I was installing the last kernel update, the system informed me that I had to remove the kernel that was 2 back. The new kernel wouldn't boot and I reported the bug via bugzilla. I got a response within a day that a new kernel had been posted on koji and I was aked to try and see if it resolved my problem. When I installed it I was again forced to remove the kernel that was 2 back. This left me with only 1 known working kernel and if this new one hadn't worked, another attempt would have put me out of business.
What enforces this apparent rule of only 3 kernels. I upgraded from F10 to F13. F10 would let me keep as many kernels as I wanted and I could clean up old ones when appropriate. How can I disable this? I really need to be able to keep several kernels on the system at any given time.
We are having a cluster with couple of disk servers, compute nodes and a head node. Disk server is nfs mounted on all the compute and head nodes.
The problem is that if any of the disk servers hangs, it freezes rest of the cluster too which is dangerous. Ideally, cluster should not care about the hanged server and run without any problem except files from that server is not visible.
Is there any way I could avoid the problem of freezing cluster because of one hanged server?

I get disconnected, and then in the network manager in gnome panel wireless network appears disables and in fact the option appears grayed out. View 4 Replies View RelatedI have Fedora 12 and I am only running ALSA (not PulseAudio) for my sound.[URL}.. It was working fine until one day I noticed I'm getting no sound. There have been countless Fedora updates (prompted by the Fedora updater) so I'm suspecting some update horsed it up somewhere.
So when I go into System > Preferences > Sound it just hangs waiting for the sound system to respond. The sound card works fine because when I dual boot to Windows XP I do indeed get sound and I haven't changed anything since it worked before under Fedora. Everything is unmuted and turned up in my alsamixer settings.
I have a laptop that I wish to keep on even when lid is closed, but I am unable to accomplish this. Does anyone have an idea where to look?

I have a Dell Inspiron 530 with onboard ICH9R RAID support. I have successfully used this with Fedora 9 in a striped configuration.Upon moving to Fedora 13 (fresh/clean install from scratch), I've noticed that it is no longer using dmraid. It now appears to be using mdadm. Additionally, I need to select load special drivers (or something close to that) during the install to have it find my array - which I've never had to do before with F9. While the install appears to work ok and then subsequently run, my array is reporting differences .. presumably because it is trying to manage what mdadm is also trying to manage. More importantly, I can no longer take a full image and successfully restore it as I could with the dmraid F9 install. Is there anyway to force F13 to use the dmraid it successfully used previously?
